Chapter 9: Below the Concrete

464 words

Cold, stale air clung to their skin, heavy with the scent of metal and dust. Tom hunched, Rose a dead weight in his arms, her leg throbbing with every jostle. His muscles screamed. He adjusted his grip, trying to ease the pressure on her injured limb. His breath hitched with the effort. Rose bit down on her lip, a faint wince crossing her face. Her eyes, however, burned with a fierce, unwavering light. She stared ahead, past Tom's shoulder, at the silent, masked figure leading them through the labyrinthine vents. He watched their guide's back, a dark, featureless shape against the faint glow of the small light attached to their belt. No words. No explanation. Just an insistent, relentless forward motion. It stoked a cold unease in Tom's gut. Who was this person? And what exactly were they getting into? Cramped spaces pressed in. Metallic surfaces scraped against their clothes as they wormed through narrow passages. Every creak, every groan of the ventilation system, made Tom flinch. His head swiveled, eyes darting into the absolute blackness behind them. They were still *inside*. Still within the walls of their prison. Distant shouts echoed, muted by layers of steel and concrete, but audible enough to spike his heart rate. Were they searching for them? Had an alarm been tripped? Paranoia gnawed at the edges of his mind. He wanted to use his power, to blast open a wider path, but the guide seemed to know exactly where to go, twisting and turning with uncanny familiarity. Rose squeezed his arm, a silent command for speed, for relentless pursuit of freedom. Her grip was tight, a reminder of her stubborn will. She might be hurt, but her spirit remained unbroken. Her gaze focused on the path ahead, an unspoken challenge to the pain that tried to slow her. He gritted his teeth, pushing through another section. The air grew thicker, wetter, carrying a faint, earthy smell. Less metallic. Less sterile. A shift in environment, subtle but distinct. Suddenly, the guide paused. A hand rose, signaling them to stop. They listened. Silence. Only the rapid thumping of Tom's own heart filled his ears. Then, a low rumble, distant but definite, vibrated through the metal under their feet. Heavy machinery. Above them. Closer than he liked. Sweat beaded on Tom's forehead, stinging his eyes. He imagined armed guards, flashlights cutting through the darkness, their voices echoing. He tightened his hold on Rose, preparing to defend them both, even in this confined space. His telekinesis hummed, a nervous energy at his fingertips. The guide moved again, faster this time, pulling open a heavy grate Tom hadn't even noticed. It wasn't a vent anymore. Beyond the grate lay a vertical shaft, descending into deeper darkness. A rickety-looking ladder disappeared into the abyss.
