Chapter 44: Race Against the Clock

Slamming his fist against the dashboard, Damien’s jaw tightened. "Move!" he barked, the sound raw, echoing in the armored SUV. Every second counted. Amelia was in there, a ticking clock counting down to her possible destruction.
Inside the vehicle, the air crackled with suppressed tension. His head of security, a hulking man named Briggs, nodded, already relaying orders through his comms. "Perimeter breach in three, two, one… go!"
Accelerating with a violent lurch, the SUV smashed through the reinforced gate. Metal shrieked. Alarms wailed, slicing through the night. Vance's compound, once a fortress, now looked like a hornet's nest stirred by an angry giant.
Hopping out before the vehicle fully stopped, Damien moved like a predator. His men fanned out, their suppressed rifles spitting silent death. A guard, startled by the sudden intrusion, barely registered the incoming threat before he crumpled.
"Clear!" a voice hissed over Damien's earpiece. They were inside the main perimeter. Now, for the building itself.
Pushing past his team, Damien sprinted towards the closest entrance, a service door he'd memorized from intel reports. His mind raced, replaying every detail Amelia had shared. She was looking for something, a core component, a vulnerability.
Bullets suddenly rained down from an upper window. "Cover!" Briggs roared, shoving Damien behind a concrete pillar. The return fire from Damien’s team was immediate, precise. Glass shattered, and the gunfire from above ceased.
Damien didn't wait. He burst through the service door, his own weapon raised. The hallway beyond was a maze of grey, sterile corridors, illuminated by harsh fluorescent lights. He knew Vance had several layers of security.
Footsteps thundered behind him. His team was right on his heels, a well-oiled machine of trained professionals. They moved with a terrifying efficiency, clearing rooms, neutralizing threats, their movements fluid and deadly.
"South wing clear," a voice reported. "West wing engaging hostiles."
Damien ignored the reports, his focus a laser. "Where is the central lab?" he demanded, his voice low and dangerous into his mic. He remembered Amelia mentioning it, a place where Vance tinkered with his deadly toys.
"Two floors down, main building, Section C," Briggs's voice came back, calm despite the chaos. "Heavy resistance expected. We have thermals showing multiple armed personnel."
"Doesn't matter," Damien muttered. He took the stairs two at a time, his boots pounding against metal. Each step fueled by a primal fear: fear for Amelia, fear of being too late.
Reaching the landing, three armed guards appeared from around a corner, weapons raised. Damien didn't hesitate. He fired, two shots, precise and quick. The guards dropped before they could even aim. His men finished the third.
"Boss, you're moving too fast," Briggs cautioned. "Let us clear the path."
"No time," Damien growled. He rounded another corner, seeing the distinct, reinforced door of what had to be the main lab. A red warning light pulsed above it.
He heard a muffled explosion from somewhere deep within the compound. The building shuddered. A faint, high-pitched whine began to reverberate through the floors.
"What was that?" one of his men asked, his voice tight.
"Vance's fail-safe," Damien deduced, a cold dread twisting in his gut. Amelia had mentioned a fail-safe. He needed to find her, *now*.
Kicking open the lab door, Damien plunged into a cavernous room filled with humming machinery, blinking lights, and rows of server racks. It was a technological labyrinth. No sign of Amelia, only more guards.
A fierce firefight erupted. Bullets ricocheted off metal. Sparks flew. Damien moved through the fray, his eyes scanning every corner, every shadow, desperate for any sign of her. He covered his men as they systematically took down Vance's remaining security.
Suddenly, a huge holographic screen flickered to life in the center of the lab. Vance's face, distorted by anger and a twisted triumph, appeared. His voice boomed, amplified through unseen speakers, echoing through the compound.
"Damien! So you've finally arrived," Vance sneered, his eyes gleaming. "A little late to the party, wouldn't you say?"
Damien’s grip tightened on his rifle. "Where is she, Vance?"
Vance chuckled, a chilling sound. "Your little Amelia, always so resourceful. She almost found it. Almost." He gestured vaguely. "But now, she's merely a guest at my grand unveiling."
On the holographic screen, images flashed: cities plunged into darkness, financial markets crashing, communication networks failing. It was a vision of global chaos.
"Behold, Damien," Vance declared, his voice filled with manic glee. "The replicated technology. It's not just a distraction. It's the ultimate show. While the world descends into technological anarchy, the original core, the true power, will be… relocated."
Damien’s blood ran cold. This wasn't just about destroying the compound. Vance planned to unleash the *replicated* tech as a global smokescreen, causing widespread chaos while he spirited away the *original* technology, the one Amelia had been searching for, to an unknown location.
He saw monitors around Vance's face showing various nodes activating, lines of code racing across screens, confirming the devastating scale of the attack. Red lights pulsed rapidly.
"You won't get away with this, Vance!" Damien roared, firing a shot at the holographic image, a futile act of rage. The image merely flickered.
"Oh, I already have, Damien," Vance said, a final, cruel smile stretching his lips. "Enjoy the show." The screen went dark. The entire compound began to vibrate violently.
Outside, distant sirens wailed, lost in the building's groaning. The high-pitched whine intensified into a deafening roar. Alarms shrieked. A massive electrical surge pulsed through the lab, knocking out several lights. Sparks flew from overloaded circuits.
"The core technology!" Damien muttered, realizing Vance’s final move. He wasn't trying to destroy *all* of it. He was sacrificing the replicated copies to ensure his escape with the genuine article. Amelia was still in danger, trapped in a compound on the verge of collapsing, with Vance slipping away.
