Chapter 40 of 50
Chapter 40: Love's Desperate Plea
894 words
A jolt ripped through Damien. His world fractured. Amelia, snatched from the stage, vanished into the swirling chaos. His carefully constructed plan, his moment of triumph, dissolved into ash. Every nerve ending screamed her name.
"Amelia!" he roared, the sound raw, tearing from his throat.
Security, both his and Vance's, clashed violently around him. Bodies slammed together. Microphones tumbled. The live feed, meant to expose Vance, now captured the terrifying abduction.
He lunged forward, a primal instinct overriding all logic. His hand stretched, reaching for the empty space where she had just been.
Two of Vance's hulking guards held her, one hand clamped over her mouth, the other twisting her arm behind her back. She struggled, a flash of her fiery spirit, but they were too strong.
Pushing past a flailing reporter, Damien stumbled over a fallen chair. His eyes, usually cool and calculating, blazed with a desperate fury. He saw Vance, a grotesque smirk plastered on his face, gesturing his men away.
"Let her go, Vance!" Damien's voice cracked, uncharacteristic vulnerability seeping through.
His own security team, led by a grim-faced Marcus, moved to intercept, but Vance's personal guard created a human shield, expertly funneling Amelia toward a rear exit.
Cold dread settled in Damien's gut. He watched her disappear, a single, terrified glance thrown over her shoulder, finding him in the crowd. That look, that raw fear in her eyes, shattered his composure.
He had to get to her. He had to.
Bellowing orders, Marcus tried to clear a path. But the hall was a maelstrom of terrified attendees, scrambling for exits, and frantic media crews, all vying for the most shocking footage.
Suddenly, the giant screens flickered. The damning evidence against Vance, still playing on a loop, was overshadowed by a live feed from a different camera. It showed Vance, now standing on a raised platform near the main entrance, Amelia held tightly against him by two burly guards. A new mic, quickly deployed, captured his voice.
"Ladies and gentlemen!" Vance's voice boomed, chillingly calm amidst the pandemonium. "A slight technical difficulty, it seems. But the show must go on!"
Damien froze, his gaze locked on Amelia. Her eyes darted wildly. Her hair was disheveled, a tear track visible on her cheek. He could practically feel her trembling.
Every fiber of his being screamed to rush her, but Vance’s men had her too tight. Any move could endanger her.
Taking a deep, shuddering breath, Damien knew what he had to do. He stepped into the spotlight, ignoring the frantic pleas of his own PR team. He found a hot mic, still active, left abandoned by a fleeing journalist.
"Vance!" Damien's voice, though strained, cut through the din, amplified by the hall's sound system. "You have what you want. Let her go!"
Vance merely smiled, a predatory gleam in his eyes. He tightened his grip on Amelia's arm, making her wince.
"What I want, Thorne?" Vance chuckled, a sound that sent shivers down spines. "I think you misunderstand. I have *part* of what I want. The most valuable part, perhaps, but not all."
Amelia struggled anew, her muffled protest barely audible.
"She has nothing to do with this!" Damien pleaded, his voice raw, stripped bare of all pretense. "Take me instead. I'm the one you want. Let her go. Please."
He didn't care about his image. He didn't care about the world watching. All that mattered was Amelia. Her safety. Her life.
"Anything, Vance!" Damien's hands clenched into fists, knuckles white. "Name your price! Money, power, I'll give you anything. Just release her. Unharmed."
His gaze was locked with Vance's, a silent battle raging between them. The hall fell eerily quiet, all eyes on the two men, and the terrified woman caught between them.
Vance's smile widened, a truly menacing sight. He reached into his coat pocket with his free hand. The movement was slow, deliberate, drawing out the suspense.
His hand emerged, holding a glinting object. A knife. Its polished blade reflected the stage lights, a cruel, cold gleam.
With a swift, practiced motion, Vance brought the knife up. The razor-sharp edge pressed against Amelia's throat, just beneath her jawline. Her eyes widened, a whimper escaping her lips. A gasp rippled through the stunned audience.
"You want her back, Thorne?" Vance's voice was a venomous whisper, yet amplified to fill the entire hall. His eyes, glinting with malicious triumph, met Damien's. "You can have her back, Thorne, but only after you hand over the core technology."
