Chapter 50: The Ultimate Sacrifice
855 words
Guns. Gleaming black steel, suddenly everywhere.
Cold muzzles leveled. Not at Ronan. At Leo. At Elara.
Time froze. Caldwell's sneer lingered, a grotesque caricature of triumph, even as the first sharp crack echoed through the ballroom.
A primal roar tore from Ronan’s throat. He moved like a predator, all muscle and desperate instinct.
One giant stride. His body was a shield, a bulwark against the incoming danger.
He threw himself forward, shoving Elara and Leo with brutal force.
“Get down!” he bellowed, his voice raw with urgency.
Elara stumbled, pulled down by Leo’s sudden weight as he instinctively dropped.
Her eyes, wide with horror, locked onto Ronan’s back. He was directly in the line of fire.
Another shot rang out, impossibly loud.
A sickening thud. Ronan grunted, a sound of pure pain.
His body spasmed, a violent, involuntary jerk.
He stumbled back, one hand flying to his chest.
Terror seized Elara. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage.
Watching him, she felt a cold dread seep into her bones.
Ronan’s eyes, usually so sharp and unwavering, were suddenly distant.
His hand, pressed against his crisp white shirt, came away wet.
Crimson. Dark, glistening, and terrifyingly real.
More shots followed, a deafening volley. Chaos erupted.
Screams pierced the air. Guests scattered, overturning tables, shattering crystal.
Genevieve, her face ashen, clutched the document tightly, her gaze fixed on the unfolding horror.
Elara scrambled, pulling Leo further down behind an overturned serving cart.
She peered over the edge, her breath catching in her throat.
Ronan swayed, his legs buckling beneath him.
A tremor ran through his powerful frame. He looked utterly bewildered, disoriented.
His head snapped up, searching for Elara amidst the pandemonium.
Their eyes met. His held a desperate plea, a silent promise.
A single tear tracked down Elara’s cheek.
Fear, stark and absolute, consumed her.
Ronan pitched forward. Slowly, agonizingly, he began to fall.
His knees hit the polished marble first, a dull impact.
Then his torso followed, crumpling like a puppet with cut strings.
Elara’s vision blurred. The world narrowed to this single, devastating image.
That pristine white shirt. Now, a growing, blooming stain.
Scarlet against white. A brutal contrast that etched itself into her memory.
He lay motionless, face down, one arm splayed out as if reaching for something just out of grasp.
No. Not Ronan. Not him.
She crawled out from behind the cart, ignoring the continuing gunfire, ignoring Leo’s terrified whimper.
Her knees scraped against the broken glass, but she felt nothing.
Only a searing, blinding need to reach him.
“Ronan!” Her voice was a raw, guttural cry, torn from the depths of her soul.
It was a scream of pure agony, of disbelief, of a future shattering into a million pieces.
She reached him, her trembling fingers hovering over his unmoving form.
His blood. So much of it.
Warm and sticky beneath her touch.
“Ronan, please. Open your eyes,” she begged, tears streaming down her face.
His breath was shallow, ragged, barely there.
Each gasp was a desperate struggle, a fight she could see him losing.
He had chosen them. He had chosen *her*.
Over everything. His empire. His life.
Leo, still cowering, watched in silent horror, his small face pale and streaked with tears.
Elara pressed her hand to Ronan’s back, trying to staunch the flow, but it was useless.
The warmth of his blood seeped through her fingers, painting her skin red.
The noise of the ballroom faded, replaced by the frantic beating of her own heart.
Only Ronan mattered. Only his fading breath.
“Ronan!” she shrieked again, shaking his shoulder gently.
His head lolled to the side, revealing his face.
His eyes were half-closed, glazed over, unfocused.
A single, wet cough escaped his lips, a final, heartbreaking sound.
He went still.
Still. Too still.
Her world tilted, spun violently out of control.
“Ronan!”
His name, a broken sob, was the last sound before the darkness claimed her vision.
