Jolting forward, Ronan lunged. His body, a blur of controlled power, intercepted the two figures closing in on Leo. One man, burly with a shaved head, barely registered Ronan’s approach before a fist connected with his jaw. The crack echoed sharply across the manicured lawn.
Staggering back, the assailant dropped the small, struggling form of Leo. The boy’s terrified whimper tore through the sudden silence that followed.
Another attacker, quicker, tried to grab Leo from the ground. Ronan’s leg swept out, a precisely aimed kick to the knee. A grunt of pain, and the man buckled, clutching his leg.
Elara screamed, a raw, guttural sound as she rushed forward. She scooped Leo into her arms, pressing him against her, her eyes wide with primal fear.
“Get behind me!” Ronan barked, his voice a low growl, devoid of any pleasantry. His knuckles were white, his posture coiled and dangerous.
Pulling Leo closer, Elara stumbled backward, just as instructed. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat of terror and a strange, burgeoning awe.
Two more men emerged from the shadows of the hedges, flanking the first two. These weren't petty thugs. Their movements were practiced, cold.
Fists clenched, Ronan took a step forward. He moved with a brutal efficiency Elara had never witnessed. This wasn't the composed CEO, but a predator protecting his own.
One man feinted right, then swung a heavy blow to Ronan’s side. Ronan twisted, absorbing most of the impact, then retaliated with a brutal elbow to the man’s temple. He went down hard.
Another attacker lunged, a glint of metal in his hand. Ronan’s eyes narrowed. A knife. Not just a snatch-and-grab anymore.
Spinning, Ronan parried the blade with his forearm, the sleeve of his expensive shirt tearing. A shallow cut bloomed, crimson against the white fabric, but he ignored it.
A powerful kick to the assailant's chest sent him sprawling backward, the knife skittering across the flagstones.
Pushing Leo further behind her, Elara shielded his face. She felt dizzy, the scene unfolding like a violent, surreal dream. This was Caldwell's ruthlessness, laid bare.
Roaring, Ronan advanced on the remaining two. His movements were fluid, precise, honed by years of training Elara knew nothing about. Each strike found its mark with sickening precision.
One man tried to grapple him, only to find himself thrown over Ronan’s shoulder with shocking force. He landed with a groan, winded.
The last one, seeing his comrades defeated, hesitated. His eyes flickered to Ronan’s unyielding stare, then to the knife on the ground.
Moving with lightning speed, Ronan kicked the knife away, sending it spinning into the bushes. He landed a final, punishing blow to the man’s stomach. The assailant doubled over, gagging.
Silence descended once more, broken only by Leo’s soft sobs. Ronan stood amidst the groaning figures, his chest heaving, a thin line of blood trickling from his torn sleeve.
He didn’t look at the defeated men. His gaze immediately snapped to Elara and Leo, scanning them for any injury. His eyes, usually cool and reserved, blazed with an intensity that stole her breath.
“Are you hurt?” he rasped, his voice raw. He took a step towards them, then another.
Shaking her head, Elara clutched Leo tighter. “No… no, we’re fine.” Her voice trembled, barely a whisper.
Leo, his face buried in her shoulder, slowly lifted his head. His small eyes, wide and tear-filled, fixed on Ronan.
Moving cautiously, Ronan knelt. His gaze softened infinitesimally as he met Leo’s stare. He reached out a hand, hesitant, then pulled it back.
Suddenly, Leo launched himself from Elara’s arms. His small legs propelled him forward, straight into Ronan’s chest. He wrapped his arms around Ronan’s neck, clinging with all his might.
Ronan froze, his body rigid. The contact was unexpected, overwhelming. His muscles, still tense from the fight, slowly began to relax.
“D-daddy…” Leo choked out, his voice muffled against Ronan’s shoulder. His tiny hands gripped Ronan’s shirt, pulling him closer.
Elara watched, tears pricking her own eyes. The word, so simple, yet so profound, hung in the air. Ronan’s entire body seemed to still. His breath hitched.
His jaw clenched, a muscle twitching in his cheek. He closed his eyes for a moment, a wave of complex emotions washing over his face. Anger, relief, and something else entirely. Something fragile and deeply personal.
Slowly, tentatively, Ronan’s arms came up. He wrapped them around Leo, pulling his son into a fierce, protective embrace. His head bowed, resting against Leo’s soft hair.
Seeing the raw emotion etched on Ronan's face, the slight tremble in his powerful frame, a fragile flicker of hope ignited in Elara’s chest. This man, so guarded, so distant, had just risked everything. He had embraced his son. Maybe, just maybe, their charade was becoming something real. Something unbreakable.
His grip tightened around Leo, a silent promise in his hold. The beaten men began to stir, but Ronan paid them no mind. His focus was entirely on the small boy in his arms, the word 'Daddy' still echoing in the quiet night.
Elara watched, her own heart swelling with a mix of terror and a newfound, overwhelming sense of belonging. They were a family, forged in fire, protected by a man who was far more than she ever imagined.
