Chapter 46: The Trap Is Set
425 words
Bitter wind whipped around Anya’s face, carrying the scent of damp earth and distant, polluted city air. Dawn was still a dark promise, hours away, yet their operation had begun.
Liam's voice, calm and precise, crackled in her ear. "Insertion point clear. Perimeter sensors bypassed. Moving to the coordinates provided by our anonymous friend."
Elias nodded, his profile grim in the low light. He glanced at Anya, a silent question in his eyes. She met it with firm resolve, pushing down the tremor that tried to surface.
Movement blurred in their peripheral vision as other teams, a dozen highly trained operatives, fanned out. Their objective: simultaneously disable Thorne's external security, create diversions, and secure potential escape routes.
Anya moved with Elias, a silent shadow. They were the primary infiltration unit, aiming for the heart of Thorne's data nexus, the central hub where his empire's secrets lay guarded.
Inside, the air grew heavy, stale. They navigated a service tunnel, its concrete walls rough beneath their gloved hands. The passage was narrow, unused, a forgotten artery beneath Thorne’s sprawling estate.
Liam pointed to a section of the wall, a faded diagram projected onto his wrist-mounted screen. "According to the intel, the access panel should be here. It’s an old maintenance conduit, not on any modern schematics."
This was it. The anonymous message, delivered just hours ago, had offered this critical, unexpected vulnerability. A gift, or a trap? Anya’s gut twisted.
Liam worked with practiced speed, his fingers dancing over a portable scanner, then a series of wires. Small lights blinked green. A soft whirring sound filled the cramped space.
A click echoed, unnervingly loud. A section of the concrete wall, disguised flawlessly, retracted with a low hiss, revealing a dark, narrow opening.
Anya stepped forward, her hand instinctively going to the hilt of the combat knife strapped to her thigh. Elias was right beside her, his suppressed pistol already drawn, scanning the darkness beyond.
Beyond the panel, a steep, metal ladder descended into blackness. No motion sensors pinged, no laser grids appeared. It was exactly as the anonymous tip had described.
Faint light glimmered far below, hinting at another level. Anya took the lead, her boots finding purchase on the cold rungs. Elias followed, his presence a solid anchor behind her.
Dust motes danced in the weak beam of their tactical lights. The air grew colder, metallic, carrying the faint scent of ozone and something else, something vaguely sterile.
Something felt off. Too easy. The thought pricked at Anya, a tiny needle of unease.
Liam's comms crackled.
