Chapter 40: I Can't Lose You

Shattered, Anya barely registered the dial tone. Her phone slipped from numb fingers, clattering softly against the polished wood of the table. A guttural sob tore from her throat, raw and uncontrolled.
Watching her, Elias felt a cold dread seep into his bones. He saw not just the tears, but the way her shoulders curved inward, as if trying to disappear. Every silent tremor wracked through him, mirroring her pain.
Julian’s cruel hand had found its way here, into their sanctuary. The news of her childhood home, auctioned in three days, was a calculated strike. It wasn’t just a house; it was her last tether to a life before him, before this chaos.
He had promised protection. He had sworn to keep her safe. Yet here she was, breaking apart right in front of him. A helpless fury simmered beneath his skin, directed at Julian, but also at his own perceived failure.
Anya sank to the floor, her knees buckling. Her hands pressed against her temples, as if to hold her very mind together. The soft lamplight caught the sheen of her tears, transforming her into a fragile, glistening statue of grief.
Pain sliced through Elias, sharp and unexpected. It wasn’t just empathy; it was a deeper, more primal fear. A terror that this relentless assault would chip away at her until nothing was left, or worse, that she’d blame him, leave him.
He couldn’t stand it. He couldn’t bear the sight of her so utterly devastated. All the battles, all the strategy, all the resources he commanded felt utterly useless in the face of her profound, personal loss.
Moving swiftly, he crossed the plush carpet. He knelt before her, his hands reaching out, hesitating. He wanted to offer comfort, but his own heart felt like a raw nerve, exposed and aching.
