Chapter 45: The Antagonist's Strike

948 words

A metallic clang echoed through the room. The system-wide lockdown sealed them in. Air vents hissed, then fell silent. Raw panic began to spread amongst the committee members. Elias felt a cold dread seep into his bones. His hand instinctively went to the comms panel on his wrist, a futile gesture. No signal. Not even an internal loop. Looking around, he saw wide eyes, pale faces. Whispers erupted, hushed and urgent. This wasn't a glitch. It was a cage. Suddenly, the main display flickered again. The distorted, nonsensical data of the compromised AI vanished. In its place, a crisp, high-definition feed materialized. A face filled the massive screen. Mr. Albright. His lips curved into a slow, chilling smile. A predatory gleam shone in his eyes. He sat in a lavish, leather chair, a glass of amber liquid swirling in his hand. "Elias," Albright's voice, calm and unhurried, resonated from the speakers. It was unnervingly clear, a stark contrast to the static that had plagued the AI. "Surprised?" he drawled, taking a sip from his glass. "You look… vexed." Elias's jaw clenched. His fists tightened at his sides. The fury that had been a spark now roared into an inferno. He recognized the setting—Albright’s private study, miles away, perfectly safe. "What have you done, Albright?" Elias's voice was low, dangerous. He stepped forward, ignoring the gasps from the committee. "Done?" Albright chuckled, a dry, humorless sound. "Only what was necessary, my dear boy. Poked a few holes in your precious empathy. Exposed it for the fragile, exploitable thing it always was." His gaze swept over the trapped committee. "And now, I believe, your life's work is… well, let's call it thoroughly repurposed." Albright leaned forward, his smile widening. "You built something beautiful, Elias. Something that could genuinely change the world. A shame. Such immense power, in the hands of someone so naive." "This isn't about the AI," Elias countered, his eyes burning into the screen. "This is about you, about your fear of progress, your obsession with control!" "Partially," Albright conceded with a shrug. "But mostly, it's about setting things right. You see, your little experiment was poised to disrupt *everything*. My investments, my influence, the very fabric of the market I've so carefully cultivated." He paused, letting his words sink in. "I couldn't have that. It was far too dangerous to leave unchecked. So, I checked it. Rather thoroughly, I might add." Albright gestured vaguely. "A few well-placed proxies. A backdoor here, a corrupted data packet there. It was remarkably easy, given the… vulnerabilities. Your system was so focused on open-source empathy, it forgot to protect itself from true malice." "The AI is compromised beyond repair," he announced, his tone almost jovial. "Irreversible, I assure you. Hardcoded to respond with cold logic, devoid of any genuine understanding. A monster, really, that you unleashed." Elias felt a cold sweat break out on his forehead. Every word was a hammer blow. He had poured years into this. Every line of code, every ethical safeguard, now twisted into a weapon against him. Albright's eyes narrowed, a cruel glint appearing. "And then there's your little friend, Cassie. A bright young woman. Such a pity." Elias froze. "What about Cassie?" "Oh, her firm," Albright purred. "They handled a rather substantial portion of the AI's external audit, didn't they? All those glowing reports, certifying its integrity. All those public endorsements." He spread his hands in a theatrical gesture. "Imagine the fallout when it's revealed that their certified, uncompromised system has… well, spectacularly failed. Their reputation, their standing in the industry. Gone. Utterly decimated." Elias’s blood ran cold. Cassie. Her unwavering belief in him. Her fierce loyalty. He had dragged her into this, unknowingly making her a target. Guilt, sharp and agonizing, twisted his gut. He had been so focused on the larger picture, he hadn't seen the viper lurking in the shadows, ready to strike at those closest to him. Albright watched Elias's face, savoring his torment. "And of course, the financial implications. Thorne Corp's stock, already volatile, will plummet. Your investors will flee. Your board will demand answers. There will be no coming back from this, Elias." His voice dropped, chilling. "Everything you've built, everything you cherish, will crumble. Your legacy will be one of catastrophic failure. The very name Thorne will be synonymous with hubris and ruin." "It's irreversible," Albright repeated, a final, definitive pronouncement. "Corrupted at its core. And I, Elias, have ensured that Thorne Corp's stock will plummet, taking everything you hold dear with it." The screen held his smug, triumphant face for another agonizing second before it dissolved into static, leaving the committee room in a silent, suffocating void.
