Chapter 9 of 10

The Siege of Veldross Estate

932 words

The hushed awe of the Ostrum City Council shattered within minutes. Under the glaring spotlights of the gala dome, the Trelon matriarch, despite her recent, miraculous cure, still clutched her son Korin's arm, her eyes darting between Barris and the now benign Sanguine Bell. Her initial relief morphed into a chilling, calculated fury. This boy, this *Barris*, had just revealed a power too profound, too untamed for their world. He was a threat to the established order, a walking, breathing anomaly that could dismantle their carefully constructed society. “A public menace!” Grand Councillor Vorlag’s voice boomed, cutting through the murmurs. He had accepted the Trelons’ final, desperate sum of credits moments before, swayed by their whispers of 'uncontrolled bioweaponry' and 'unstable, rogue Floracrafter'. “His creations, even if temporarily subdued, are too dangerous. The Veldross Estate harbors illegal, sentient strains. This… this *Barris* cannot be permitted to continue!” Magnar, watching from a monitor in his private command center, felt a cold dread settle in his stomach. He’d anticipated Trelon retaliation, but not this. Not a full city-wide condemnation. A red alert flashed across his screen, an urgent dispatch from his internal security network. *Emergency declaration. Martial law invoked for Veldross Sector 7. Immediate intervention approved.* They weren’t just coming for Barris; they were coming to eradicate his world. His *son's* world. “Seal every perimeter!” Magnar barked into his comms, his voice a low growl of controlled rage. “Activate all outer defenses. Thermal cloaks. Kinetic barriers. I want a complete blackout. Nothing gets in, nothing gets out. Prep the Sky-Sentinels. Deploy the ground drones. Arm the sonic disruptors. If they want a war, they’ll get one.” His chief of security, Roric, a man built like a reinforced bunker, clicked his comm. “Sir, with respect, these are city marshals. A direct engagement… that’s unprecedented. It could spark a civil conflict.” “Let it,” Magnar snapped, his eyes glinting with a dangerous resolve. He slammed a fist on his console, the metal groaning under the impact. “They want to hurt my boy? They want to burn down the only home he’s ever truly known? Then they will face the wrath of the Veldross Corporation. Barris is in my custody. Any asset, any man, any *weapon* that threatens him will be neutralized. Is that clear, Roric?” Roric’s grim face appeared on screen. “Crystal clear, sir. Defenses are online. Estimated time to outer wall impact: ten minutes.” Magnar turned away, pacing the cold floor. He had designed this compound to repel corporate espionage, not an armed siege. But he would turn it into an impenetrable fortress for Barris. His 'pet project' had become something far more precious, far more fragile. A boy he would keep safe even if it meant tearing Ostrum City limb from limb. Meanwhile, Barris was not in the gala dome, nor was he watching the news. He was in the West Wing, a faint thrumming reaching him even through the thick, reinforced walls. His beloved Razor-Vines, usually so cheerful, were thrashing erratically. The Apex-Orchid, his giant, sleepy companion, pulsed with a frantic, distressed light, its massive petals clenching and unclenching like a hyper-ventilating lung. “What’s wrong, my friends?” Barris murmured, gently touching a quivering vine. The razor-sharp leaves brushed his palm, not with their usual affectionate nuzzle, but with a desperate, frantic energy. A low, resonant hum began to vibrate through the floor, growing in intensity. It was a familiar resonance, one he had only ever felt during catastrophic storms or seismic shifts. This was the collective distress of his entire botanical family. He closed his eyes, extending his awareness, sinking into the living root system under the tiles. He felt it then—profound, collective grief, sharp as a thorn. *They want to hurt our caretaker. They want to tear us from him.* And beneath the grief, a terrifying resolve. *We will guard him. We will keep our home. We will erase their threat.* The plants weren't just agitated; they were preparing for war. He sensed the dormant spores in their root systems, swelling, ready to be launched. Not just a defensive burst, but a mass dispersal event. A city-leveling spore-strike, potent enough to render every living thing within miles comatose, perhaps even permanently still. His gentle friends, in their anguish, were preparing to become the villains the council feared. “No, no, my darlings,” Barris whispered, pressing his hands against the pulsing stem of the Apex-Orchid. “You mustn’t. That’s not the way.” He felt a primal, desperate urge from the flora, a collective refusal to back down. He was their sun, their soil, their entire world. If he was threatened, their duty was to incinerate the threat. He had to stop them. He had to find a peaceful solution, and he had to find it now. The Veldross Estate shuddered. A concussive blast rattled the foundations, making dust rain from the ceiling. Magnar’s voice, tight with stress, echoed through the intercom system. “Outer perimeter breached! Sector Gamma-9, prepare for immediate engagement!” Barris felt the surge of defensive fury from his plants intensify, their spores practically vibrating with readiness. He pictured Magnar’s security forces, armed and ready to defend him. He pictured the military, breaching the walls. He was caught between two armies, both ready to kill for what they believed was right. One side was the city’s soldiers, doing their duty. The other was his beloved, monstrous friends, ready to unleash an ecological apocalypse for his sake. Barris had to make a choice. Let Magnar’s army kill the soldiers and condemn his boss, or unleash his sorrowing, monstrous plants and become the villain everyone now feared.
