Chapter 7 of 10

The Architect's Trap

979 words

Soraya clutched the cool metal of the thumb drive. The gala’s opulent hum faded into a distant thrum. She needed a private space, a screen. The discreet business lounge on the ground floor, usually deserted this late, offered a row of sleek, untouched workstations. She slipped in. One workstation glowed, logged in and ready. She slid the drive into an open port. A single file appeared: `Najem_AlMansur_Plan_Audio.mp3`. She clicked it. Her own voice, crisper, more confident, filled the small space, laced with a familiar, fierce determination she barely recognized now. "Rania, the marriage has to happen. It's the only way into the holding firm. My family's entire life savings are tied up in the Aethel Project. Jamil knows it, and he’s leveraging it for his own gain. Tariq is the linchpin. If I can destabilize his foundation, his entire empire crumbles, and the Aethel Project comes back to me, to Najem Studio. Bankrupt him from the inside." Another voice, softer, Rania's, responded. "It’s risky, Soraya. Your father will be furious if he finds out your amnesia isn't real, that you're playing a long game with a man that powerful. And what about the details? The loophole to transfer his assets?" Soraya’s past self chuckled, a cold, calculated sound. "That’s where the contingency comes in. A perfectly legal, untraceable loophole hidden deep within the prenuptial agreement I’m having drafted. Once the central development bid is secured under his name, every asset tied to it automatically diverts to the spouse if specific, easily triggered conditions are met. I’ll own him. His fortune. His company. He’ll be left with nothing but the name, and Najem Studio will rise from the ashes. I just need you to ensure the initial `contrac` is signed, and the silver key to my hidden `archive` is safe, in case... well, in case I forget." The recording clicked off. The silence that followed was a physical blow. Soraya stared at the black screen, her vision blurring. Her hands trembled, not with fear, but with a horrifying realization. *She* was the architect of this deception. *She* had planned to use Tariq, to bankrupt him, to steal his empire. Tariq, the man who had pulled her from the flames, who had paid her `debts`, who had just `publicly` avenged her. The man who was currently holding her `firm` in his hands, only to have it `legally` absorbed, as *she* had `demanded`. The irony was a bitter taste. She snatched the thumb `drive`, her movements jerky. The penthouse. She needed to confront him, to see the truth in his eyes. The ride up the obsidian elevator of the main tower was a blur of self-recrimination. The doors parted to reveal the `vast`, `minimalist` `expanse` of Tariq’s `personal` `sanctum`. He stood by the `floor-to-ceiling` window, gazing out at the `sprawling` `metropolis`, his `back` to her. The city lights shimmered like `scattered` `gems` below. "You knew, didn't you?" Her voice was a raw whisper, barely audible over the distant city hum. He turned slowly, his expression unreadable, eyes like polished onyx. "Knew what, Soraya?" His tone was soft, almost gentle, devoid of surprise. She held up the thumb `drive` like a weapon. "This. My plan. To `infiltrate` your `company`, to take everything. The marriage, the trapdoor—it was all *my* design to bankrupt you. I was going to destroy you, Tariq." He walked towards her, `measured` `strides`, until he stood inches away. The scent of `sandalwood` and `ozone` clung to him. "And you believe I wouldn't have uncovered such a plan? You believe I am so easily outmaneuvered?" Her jaw worked. "Then why? Why go along with it? Why save me, help me, *marry* me?" The words `tumbled` out, laced with a `desperate` `pleading` she didn't realize she possessed. He reached out, his `palm` cupping her `cheek`, thumb stroking her `skin` with a `feather-light` `touch` that sent a `shiver` through her. "Because `somewhere` in that `brilliant`, `stubborn` `mind` of `yours`, the `woman` I knew was still there. And she deserved to be saved from her own `schemes`, and from Jamil's `machinations`. And perhaps… perhaps I simply desired you, Soraya. Desired you enough to walk into the `fire` you lit." The intensity in his eyes was `unbearable`, `consuming`. It was a gaze that `stripped` her bare, `exposing` every `vulnerability`, every `hidden` `longing`. The suspicion drained from her, overtaken by sharp, sudden heat. He leaned in, `closing` the `final` `distance`. His lips `met` hers, tentative at first, then `demanding`, `possessive`. She gasped, `clinging` to his `shirt`, `lost` in the `storm` of `sensation`. The `world` `outside` the penthouse `ceased` to `exist`. There was only the `fierce` `press` of his `mouth`, the `subtle` `taste` of `mint` and `power`, and the `overwhelming` `realization` that she had `fallen`, `irrevocably`, for the man she had `sworn` to `ruin`. Later, `tucked` against his `side` in the `vast`, `luxurious` `bed`, the `silken` sheets `tangling` around them, Soraya pretended to be asleep. His `steady` `heartbeat` `thrummed` beneath her `ear`. Her `mind`, however, raced. The hidden contract condition. She had to find the original files. Slipping out of his `embrace`, she `located` her `briefcase`, still `packed` from the `chaos` of the studio `fire`. Inside, buried `beneath` `charred` `blueprints`, was an `old`, `leather-bound` `folio`. She `opened` it, her `gaze` `scanning` the `dense` `legal` `jargon`. There it was, `underlined` in her `own` `hand`: *“Should the acquiring party fail to meet the stipulated investment milestones within the central district development period, ownership of all associated assets shall revert to the originating design entity’s primary beneficiary.”* It was `clever`, `insidious`, and entirely her `own` `work`. Her `past` `self` had `crafted` a `perfect` `trap`. She slid back into bed, `feigning` sleep once more. Tariq `shifted`, `drawing` her `closer`. He `pressed` a `kiss` to her `forehead`, his `voice` a `low`, `rumbling` `whisper` against her `hair`. "I know you set a trap for me, Soraya, and I am walking into it anyway."
