Chapter 27: Alexander's Rage Unleashed
907 words
Pounding on the office door startled Alexander. He looked up from the glowing screens, every muscle in his body taut.
“Enter!” His voice, usually calm, held an edge of impatience.
Elara burst in, her hair disheveled, eyes wide with a terror he’d rarely seen. Her hands clutched a sheaf of papers, trembling visibly.
“Alexander, you need to see this.” Her voice was a strained whisper, barely audible.
Observing her frantic state, Alexander rose instantly. He strode around his large desk, his gaze fixed on her pale face.
“What’s happened, Elara?” He reached out, his fingers brushing her arm. Her skin felt cold, clammy.
Pushing the papers into his hands, she stumbled backward. “My grandmother’s land… it’s connected to your family. To your company. To Marcus.”
Brow furrowing, Alexander scanned the documents. His eyes quickly darted over the legal jargon: land deeds, restrictive covenants, decades-old lawsuits.
A chilling realization slowly began to dawn. The PI’s report detailed a contentious legal battle, his grandfather’s company against Elara’s grandmother. It spoke of property rights, of a bitter dispute that was thought long settled.
“These covenants…” he murmured, his voice trailing off. His mind raced, connecting the dots. This wasn't just old history. This was active.
“They can be exploited,” Elara gasped, tears welling. “The investigator said they could dismantle everything you’ve built. My grandmother’s land… it’s the key.”
His vision sharpened, the legal terms blurring into a single, terrifying image. He felt a cold dread seep into his bones. This wasn't merely a business attack. This was personal. And Elara was caught in the crossfire.
Clenching his jaw, Alexander’s eyes hardened. He slammed the papers onto his desk. The loud thud echoed in the silent office.
“Marcus,” he growled, the name a venomous hiss.
“You knew about this, didn’t you?” Elara asked, her voice trembling. “About the land, about him?”
Nodding slowly, Alexander ran a hand over his face. He’d kept this part of his life hidden, shielded from everyone. But now, with Elara directly targeted, the truth had to come out.
“Marcus Thorne wasn’t just a rival. He was family once,” Alexander began, his voice flat, devoid of emotion. “My father’s closest friend, almost a brother. He even worked alongside my grandfather in the early days of Thorne Industries.”
Taking a deep breath, he continued. “He was brilliant, charismatic. But beneath that charm lay a calculating, ruthless ambition. An ambition that knew no loyalty.”
He walked to the large window, staring out at the city skyline, but his eyes saw only the past. “When my father took over, Marcus was his right hand. They built this empire together, brick by brick.”
“Then, the betrayal came. Swift. Brutal. Unseen.” His fingers curled into fists. “Marcus systematically stole trade secrets, manipulated contracts, siphoned off funds through shell companies. He nearly brought Thorne Industries to its knees.”
Alexander’s voice dropped, laced with a bitter memory. “My father almost lost everything. His health deteriorated from the stress. Marcus vanished, leaving a trail of destruction, resurfacing years later as a competitor, a ghost of our past.”
“He’s been playing a long game, Elara. A very long game.” He turned, his gaze piercing. “This isn’t just about money for him. It’s about total obliteration. He wants to watch us burn, just as he tried to do to my father.”
Marcus had always been obsessed with the Thorne legacy. He saw it as rightfully his, a prize stolen from him. This deep-seated resentment fueled his every move.
“He wanted to rewrite history. To claim our achievements as his own, after destroying the original source,” Alexander explained, his voice low and intense. “He couldn't stand seeing the company thrive after his departure.”
Alexander’s mind reeled with the implications. He’d spent years fortifying his empire against Marcus’s relentless attacks, patching up the holes left by the previous betrayal. But this… this was different.
“He’s using your grandmother’s land, Elara,” Alexander stated, the words heavy with grim finality. “These restrictive covenants… they’re a legal loophole he’s been planning to exploit for decades.”
“He probably bought up the surrounding properties years ago, waiting for the perfect moment. This isn't just a threat to my company. It’s a direct assault on you. He’s making you the unwitting weapon.”
His eyes narrowed, a dangerous glint appearing in their depths. Marcus wasn't just attacking his business; he was attacking his life, his future, the people he cared about.
“He wants to erase me. To leave nothing behind.” The icy control Alexander usually maintained began to crack. “He’s always been jealous, vindictive.”
“But why me?” Elara whispered, her voice barely a breath. “Why my grandmother’s land specifically?”
Alexander closed his eyes, picturing the intricate web of Marcus’s schemes. “Because it’s the oldest, most foundational piece of our original land acquisition. It's the lynchpin, the weak point he’s been probing for years.”
Opening his eyes, they burned with an almost terrifying intensity. “And because involving you, making you the unwitting instrument of my downfall… that’s his ultimate revenge. He wants to destroy my legacy, my name, and everything I hold dear.”
A raw, guttural growl tore from Alexander’s throat, a sound of pure, unadulterated fury. His knuckles turned white as he clenched his hands, the muscles in his jaw twitching violently. Marcus intended to annihilate not just his empire, but everything he cared for, Elara included. The fight had just become far more personal. And far more deadly. His greatest fear was confirmed. He would protect her, no matter the cost. His world was crumbling, and she was at the epicenter. He wouldn't let her fall with it. He couldn't.
