Chapter 8 of 10

Heart of the Machine

824 words

“Which one,” Ivelina asked, her voice low, “do you choose?” Tadek didn’t answer immediately. He stared at the two tunnels. The right, a black maw promising escape, a return to the quiet, mundane existence he craved. The left, a dull hum vibrating through the rock, pulling him towards the very chaos he sought to avoid. He’d envisioned a life of soft cushions and undisturbed naps, not one where he battled monstrous cult leaders. Yet, the thought of Borislav succeeding, of the world ripping open and spilling its abyssal horrors across Kostany, left a sour taste. There would be no comfort, no obscurity, if the fabric of reality frayed at his doorstep. “Left,” Tadek said, the choice bitter on his tongue. Sprawling on silk sheets required an intact ceiling overhead. A cataclysm would bring endless disruptions, screaming refugees, and draft notices. Ivelina measured his posture for half a second, then gave a sharp nod. Without another word, she turned and sprinted down the left passage, her movements fluid and purposeful. Tadek followed, a deep sigh escaping him. So much for his peaceful path. They moved at a sprint, the granite floor hot through their boots as the baseline thrum pitched into a low roar. Ozone stung the nostrils. After a few twisting turns, the tunnel opened into a vast, cavernous space. At its heart, a colossal furnace cylinder pulsed with incandescent cerulean light, copper pipes snaking across the bedrock like ribbing. This was the Veles Imperator’s etheric heart, vibrating off beat. Standing before the thrumming core was Chancellor Borislav. But it was not the man they knew. His torso had distended, stretched wide beneath riveted plates of blackened brass. Jagged brass feeds pierced his collarbones, leaking the same azure fluid that churned in the vat. His gray skin stretched glossy over cheekbones, pupils dilated until no sclera showed. Steel rods replaced his ribs, his frame humming with sufficient torque to shake loose gravel from the ceiling. “Ah, Voroshan returns,” Borislav grated, his tone split by an artificial undertone like grinding teeth. He pivoted, torn lips drawing back over brass-plated teeth. “And his little pet. You’ve been busy. But you are too late.” Tadek planted his boots, shoulders sagging under the heat. The old administrator had spliced his own marrow into the fuel line. “What a wretched waste of effort,” Tadek muttered. Borislav chuckled, a rattling, wheezing sound. “A necessary sacrifice. To usher in the dawn. You see, the ritual wasn’t just about bringing back Voroshan. He was a brute, a blunt instrument. We needed something more precise.” He extended a metallic, clawed hand towards Tadek, the gesture sweeping and possessive. “We needed a key. A perfect key.” [Core Multiplier: 256x] [New Skill Unlocked: Resonant Conduit] The blue glyphs flared across his retinas. A stinging vibration spread behind Tadek’s sternum, syncing with the engine's RPM. The path was converting ambient heat directly into baseline charge. “Your Path,” Borislav shouted over the whine of brass gears, “is no leash, boy! It is an intake valve. Every stride you drag out multiplies raw yield. The circle was never built to fetch ancient Voroshan from the dirt. It was forged to forge you—an engine so bloated with charge that your sheer presence cracks the boundary stones!” Tadek wiped sweat from his chin. They had tried to turn him into a planetary detonator simply because he refused to get out of bed on time. “Lies,” Ivelina snapped, fingers hooking the grip of her sidearm. “The ancient records show the seven sealed the trenches.” Borislav merely laughed, a sound like grinding stone. “Oh, my dear Ivelina. Still clinging to the fables? The Sentinels have always been so naive.” His gaze, now narrowed, flicked to Tadek, a venomous smirk twisting his features. “Tell me, boy, do you trust the spy at your shoulder? The one drawing coin from the order pledged to smother my dawn?” [Warning: Threat to Allegiance Detected] [Current Relationship Status with Ivelina: Unstable. Proceed with Caution.] The glyphs shifted red. Tadek glanced sideways. Ivelina’s jaw set hard, her knuckle white on the leather strap. She had never been an ordinary academy prefect. She was an operative running an asset. “Sentinel?” Tadek asked, his tone dry over the din of grinding pistons. Her mouth tightened. She didn't contradict the Chancellor. Borislav’s pistons hissed steam as he threw both arms wide. “She was never your ally! But loyalty is irrelevant when the foundation gives way.” Above them, the pressurized cylinder groaned, rivets shearing off the casing like rifle fire. The cerulean glow intensified, twisting into a deep, bruised violet. The air shrieked, as if the very fabric of reality was being stretched to its breaking point. A jagged split ruptured the air above the steam exhaust, expanding along the vault. Borislav tilted his chin up, steam venting from his collar. His reinforced frame flared with violet arc-light, his gaze locked on the opening void. “Look upon it! The work finishes here!”
