Chapter 9 of 10
The Infinite Array

The chamber bucked like a enraged leviathan. Alarms shrieked, a discordant symphony of imminent structural failure. Dust, thick and acrid, choked the air, painting the frantic dance of flashing emergency lights in a hazy, crimson glow. Vance, momentarily stunned, stumbled back from Hana, his mouth slack with disbelief, his silver hair coated in grime.
“My system! What have you done, you imbecile?!” he roared, spinning toward Master Kwan, who was slumped against his console, breath rasping in terror that seemed to pierce through the corruption’s control. The fractured support beam groaned again, shedding another cascade of concrete shards.
My own restraints, already strained by Hana's clever jolt, felt like tissue paper. A torrent of heat, raw and exhilarating, surged through my meridians. It wasn't the refined essence of the Azure Empyrean, nor the chaotic Anima Mundi of this decaying world. This was *faith*. A thousand thousand fleeting thoughts, hopes, and admirations, channeled from the glowing screens across Veridia, coalescing into a power far more potent than I had ever anticipated.
With a snarl, I tore my wrists free. The metal cuffs snapped, clattering uselessly to the floor. The guards, disoriented by the chaos, were scrambling, some trying to re-secure the collapsing section, others fumbling for their comms. They were outmatched, out of their depth in a battle that had spiraled beyond mere physical confrontation.
Hana, meanwhile, was a whirlwind. She hadn't gone for an escape route; she’d gone straight for the obsidian spire. Vance’s men, recovering from the initial shock, converged on her. One guard, a hulking figure, lunged, but Hana ducked under his wild swing, her movements precise, almost fluid. Her fingers found purchase on a loose access panel at the monolith's base, wrenching it open with surprising force. Sparks flew as she began to tear at the exposed wiring, her face set in a grim line.
“Stop her!” Vance shrieked, his voice cracking with panic. He rushed toward the monolith, pushing past his own men, but the swaying floor threw him off balance. “Don’t let her disable the purge-code! It'll destabilize the entire network!”
Disable the purge-code. The phrase resonated with me. This world's lingering rot, weaponized and amplified by this very artifact. This was not a tool to be protected; it was a wound to be cauterized. My gaze swept across the lab. Wires snaked across the floor, connecting glowing terminals. Data streams pulsed across holographic displays. High-frequency generators whirred in the corners, providing power to Vance’s infernal machines.
My world had been one of natural essence, of carefully carved stones and elemental currents. This world, however, offered a different medium: technology, information, raw voltage. All conduits. All potential.
The faith-power within me roared, a sunburst in my core. It yearned for direction, for purpose. I was no longer merely the cultivator trapped in a foreigner's body, nor the reluctant idol. I was the nexus, the architect of this newfound idolatry, capable of shaping belief into tangible reality. The core of my being, the deep understanding of arrays, screamed for expression.
I extended my hands, feeling the vibrations of the lab's massive power conduits humming beneath the floor. My senses, sharpened by the surge of faith, could discern the intricate flow of high-voltage circuits, the digital whispers, the very currents that powered Vance’s insidious network. This entire lab, with its glowing screens, its whirring servers, its crisscrossing cables, was a massive, untapped array waiting to be drawn.
Vance, his face twisted with desperation, finally reached Hana, grabbing her arm. “You little –” he began, but she twisted, kicking out at his knee. He yelped, momentarily releasing her, giving her just enough time to rip out a bundle of fiber optic cables from the spire's interior. A shower of sparks erupted, and the pulsing light of the obsidian spire dimmed for a moment, then flared erratically.
“No! You fool!” Vance screamed, tearing at his hair. “The feedback loop! It’s going critical!” He stumbled back, frantically tapping at a wrist-mounted device, trying to regain control.
Master Kwan, now fully lucid, though still weak, looked up at me with pleading eyes. “Jiang Xun… the Anima Mundi… it’s reacting… the reversal… it’s possible here!”
His words struck home. The reversal. Restoration. The cleansing of the decay. My mind raced, drawing upon the deepest reserves of my knowledge. I didn't need carved stones or consecrated inks. The very air, charged with the lab's raw power and the omnipresent digital currents, would serve. My body, a vessel overflowing with the faith of millions, would be the catalyst.
I planted my feet, summoning every ounce of my will. The floor beneath me vibrated, the lab's machinery seemed to hum in response. My aura, no longer contained, expanded, filling the chaotic chamber with suffocating pressure. Lines of shimmering gold, invisible to the mundane eye but clear as day to my perception, began to etch themselves into the air, tracing a complex array across the collapsing ceiling, down the vibrating walls, and across the metallic floor.
They weren't drawn with a brush; they were willed into existence, formed from the raw data flowing through the network, from the stray electromagnetic fields, from the very spiritual residue of the Anima Mundi attempting to fight back. Each line hummed with nascent power, a web of brilliant light coalescing into a grand design. Vance’s security guards, caught in the expanding field, stumbled, their movements sluggish and their knees buckling under the sheer metaphysical pressure.
“What… what is this?” Vance croaked, backing away from the burgeoning array, his face paling as he felt its overwhelming presence. He looked at his failing screens, then at me, a dawning horror in his eyes.
The massive array began to glow, not with the cold, sterile light of the lab, but with a warm, verdant luminescence, like a sunrise breaking through storm clouds. This was no simple array for translocation. This was a grand restoration matrix, designed to scour the rot, to re-harmonize the fractured spiritual veins of Earth itself. To power it, to make it truly effective, would demand every last drop of the faith-based power I had accumulated, and more.
And then, the choice presented itself, stark and brutal, shimmering within the core of the array. I could channel all this power, this phenomenal surge of collective belief, into the purification. It would heal the Anima Mundi, save this world, but leave me utterly drained, powerless, and trapped here forever. The array for my return, the translocation back to the Azure Empyrean, would be nothing but a forgotten whisper.
Or… I could siphon off a portion, just enough to construct a functional portal, to escape this collapsing mess, leaving Earth to its slow, withered demise. My home world, my rightful place, beckoned. The lure of escaping this clumsy, dangerous body, of reclaiming my former glory, was a powerful, almost agonizing pull.
My gaze drifted across the chaotic lab. Hana was still grappling with Vance, her focus unwavering on gutting the spire, protecting the world in her own way. Her eyes, filled with a fierce determination, met mine for a fleeting second amidst the chaos. Across the flashing strobes and falling debris, something solidified within me, far stronger than the desire for old glory.
The great matrix blazed, demanding its tribute. The portal, a ghostly outline of shimmering possibility, flickered beside it, a stark counterpoint. The choice was mine, and the fate of a world hung on it.
With a roar that tore through the alarms and the groaning metal, I made my decision, pouring every fiber of my being into the verdant light.
“This world is mine to protect now!”
