Chapter 1 of 10
The Path-Blocking Daisy

The chandelier ropes snapped with a screech of shearing iron, and ninety kilograms of masked executioner dropped straight toward his unarmored collarbone.
Her twin daggers carried a crimson particle trail, the hallmark of the high-tier Guild skill [Marrow-Reaper]. She had clearance, stealth buffs, and a damage stat high enough to mulch his Level 4 flesh into red broth.
Varnar did not draw a sword. He did not dodge. He was a former lead QA tester for a codebase held together by duct tape and prayer, and he knew that the hall's marble pavers were laid out on an uncompressed eight-unit navmesh grid.
He knelt. His knuckles brushed a mortar seam. With his thumb, he pressed a thumbnail-sized white bulb into the grout.

A six-inch stem erupted from the stone, blooming into a floppy, chalk-white daisy. Its collision box, owing to a legacy coding oversight from the closed alpha patch three years prior, possessed an infinitely tall, unpathable cylinder volume.
The assassin, descending at terminal velocity, struck the invisible vertical boundary.
Her velocity zeroed instantly without triggering fall damage. Her twin daggers vibrated against empty air with a manic *tink-tink-tink-tink*, trapped in an endless falling-state calculation. Her legs locked into an absurd mid-air splits, knees twitching at sixty frames per second as the simulation desperately attempted to find a valid landing coordinate between the flagstones and the flower's absolute exclusion zone.
"Target acquired," she gasped, her voice filter cracking under the collision loop. Her dark leather cowl slipped sideways. Her porcelain cheeks flushed scarlet, eyes darting from Varnar's face to the daisy, then back to Varnar. Her targeting script was caught in an infinite loop: target within reach, but target mathematically unreachable. "You... you broke my vector. Why are you looking at my boots? Who gave you permission to nullify my kill-box? Wait—cease this unholy posture! My core routine... it hurts..."
"Excuse me," Varnar mumbled, staring hard at his own frayed sleeves to avoid making eye contact. His palms felt damp. Public speaking terrified him, and talking to an assassin who was vibrating aggressively at hip height was several magnitudes worse. "The, um. The clearance isn't high enough for a drop from that angle. You need to reset your client. I'm sorry."
Around them, the Chalkis Schola's victory feast detonated into panic. Noble scions threw platters of roasted basilisk meat, scrambling away from the vibrating assassin. Across the room, Gallio—the towering, golden-haired idiot who currently held the school's top combat ranking—bellowed a battle cry and charged an empty wall, convinced an invisible phantom had cast a curse.
"Foul specter!" Gallio roared, broadsword cleaving an innocent serving cart in twain. "Show yourself and taste the light of justice!"
Varnar ducked into the shadows beneath the mezzanine before anyone noticed the gardener kneeling by the glitch.
He had seventy seconds before server ticks forced a garbage-collection sweep and purged the daisy. His boots scraped the polished basalt as he sprinted down the private corridor toward the Grand Archive. The heavy bronze vault at the end of the passage was sealed behind seven interlocking arcane wards, designed to withstand three sustained dragon breaths and openable only by the Headmaster's sovereign crest.
Varnar didn't have the crest. He didn't even have a lockpick.
He did, however, have a decorative obsidian birdbath standing three inches from the vault's outer seam.
Slowing to a brisk trot, Varnar angled his shoulders forty-five degrees against the rim of the basin. He toggled his inventory, pulling a coarse turnip seed into his primary hand slot. He took a single half-step backward, jumped, and hit the plant interaction key on the exact frame his left heel grazed the stone lip.
*Plant. Crouch. Jump. Swap item.*
The seed-planting animation forced his character model into a static crouch, while the birdbath's curved geometry attempted to shove his feet outward to prevent clipping. Because both physics checks resolved on the exact same frame, the Chronicle system panicked. It averaged the two contradictory positions and shunted his entire character model four feet forward along the Z-axis.
The world flashed gray. The texture map vanished for a heartbeat.
*Pop.*
Varnar stumbled out of empty air and landed flat on his face inside the sealed VIP vault.

Varnar scrambled up, ignoring the floating text boxes. His lungs dragged in dry, stagnant air. The vault was a cavern of forgotten relics, but only one mattered: atop a pedestal of petrified elderwood rested a cracked, pulsing orb the size of a shield. Black veins spider-webbed across its crimson shell, radiating heat that scorched the fringe of his tunic.
The Ancient Calamity Egg. An end-game catastrophe seed, intended to slumber until Chapter 8 of the martial curriculum.
Varnar grasped the shell with both hands. It was heavy, slick, and burning hot. He wrenched it free from the cradle.
The air tore open. A crimson notification banner, ten times larger than any normal system prompt, filled his field of vision with jagged, bleeding runes.

"Two weeks," Varnar whispered, dread tightening his throat. "The sequence break triggered the wipe early."
A sharp *CRACK* split the silence.
The egg in his arms didn't wait. A massive fissure jagged down its center, spitting sparks of black fire. The shell disintegrated into soot, dumping a scaly, bat-winged monstrosity straight into Varnar's chest. It was no larger than a hound, coated in obsidian scales with two glowing sulfur slits for eyes. It let out a piercing, high-pitched screech that rattled the gold urns on the shelves, immediately sinking its needle-sharp teeth into the meat of Varnar's left thumb.
"Ow—no, bad, stop—"
The vault door clicked, the seven internal tumblers revolving with a heavy groan.
The massive door swung inward.
Framed in the doorway stood Magister Othrys, silk robes pristine, his braided silver beard hanging over an ivory staff that hummed with quiet, lethal pressure. The old man's face, usually set in the gentle, grandmotherly lines of an academy mentor, went entirely still as his gaze moved from the empty pedestal, to the jagged hole in the room's wards, and finally to Varnar, who stood shivering in the center of the forbidden floor with an illegal dragon biting his hand.
"My dear boy," Othrys said softly, his lips parting into a smile that reached nowhere near his pale eyes. "How, precisely, did you bypass my threshold?"
