Chapter 9 of 10
Resonance Feedback Loop

A guttural roar shredded the air, vibrating Xiraza’s bones. The Mega-Beast’s claw, a jagged shard of mutated crystal, plunged downward, shearing through the pressurized slipstream. Xiraza’s core whined at pitch so sharp it rattled her teeth, signaling imminent catastrophic failure. Her vision blurred at the edges, the plaza a kaleidoscope of fear and crumbling stone. This was it. The price. The glorious, terrifying, solitary end.
Then, a hand closed over hers, strong and insistent. Khyren. He’d reached her. How? When? There was no time to question, no breath for a protest. A searing jolt slammed through her, not from her own overloaded core, but from *him*. His Aegis suit, scarred and battered, glowed with an identical, dangerous amber light. He wasn't pulling her away. He was linking. His core, his very life-force, was now a conduit, a mirror reflecting her lethal charge.
“No!” Xiraza shouted, but the word drowned in the beast’s shriek, swallowed by the rising howl of their conjoined power cells. She tried to pull away, to break the circuit, to push him back, but Khyren’s grip was unyielding. His eyes, molten gold in the reflected light, met hers. Not a plea, not a sacrifice, but a fierce, absolute demand. He wasn't letting her die alone.
“You think I’d let you go out like this?” His voice, raw with strain, cut through the chaos. “Not after all this. Not now.”
The Mega-Beast’s claw was a breath away, a shimmering avalanche of death. Their combined cores pulsed, a violent, unstable symphony. It was too much. It had to be too much for even the monster. Their internal regulators flashed a final, urgent warning before buckling under the impossible strain.
Suddenly, a bright, metallic *ping* echoed from the distant wall. A single laser-sight, a pinprick of crimson, danced across Khyren’s visor. Velza. Free. And aiming to sever their connection, not kill them, but just enough to let Xiraza’s overloaded core detonate alone. A sick, twisted calculation.
Before the thought fully formed, a flash of six-legged fury launched from Xiraza’s shoulder. Chitter, a blur of fur and crackling plasma, zipped across the distance. The Volt-Vixen slammed into Velza’s sniper rifle with an audible *CRACK*, discharging a focused bolt of paralyzing static that instantly fused the weapon’s barrel into a molten mess. Velza shrieked, a high-pitched, furious sound as the residual charge arced, searing her palms, twisting her fingers into blackened hooks. Her aim shattered, her final scheme neutralized.
Below, the Mega-Beast’s claw connected. Not with the barricades, not with the Aegis personnel, but with the searing force field now surrounding Xiraza and Khyren. The impact was not a smash, but a containment. Their cores, no longer restrained, bellowed in resonance. The feedback loop amplified. A torrent of raw pulse discharge erupted, a blinding, furious nova of azure and gold.
It wasn't an explosion. It was a release. A controlled cataclysm. The Mega-Beast roared one last, pained bellow as the concentrated pulse fire tore through its crystalline hide, dissolving its very essence. Dust, not gore, rained down, sparkling like harmless, neutralized starlight. The beast, a skyscraper-sized horror just moments before, simply ceased to be, its mass vaporized into microscopic motes.
The shockwave followed, a physical punch that slammed across the plaza. It cracked Xiraza’s suit, shredding the compromised plating, severing the comm-links and internal sensors. Khyren’s suit, already damaged, fared no better, disintegrating in a shower of sparks. The force lifted them, hurled them like ragdolls through the air, over the debris-strewn plaza, into the shattered remnants of the inner barricade. Then, darkness.
---
Ash coated her tongue and throat with a gritty, bitter taste. Xiraza forced her eyelids open, pain lancing through her ribs while every tendon burned in protest. The sky remained a bruised purple, but the air hung thick with smoke, shimmering with residual heat. The plaza was a devastation of twisted metal and pulverized rock, but the Mega-Beast was gone. Vanished.
Khyren. Where was Khyren? She pushed herself up, her suit a ruin, wires sparking, internal alarms blaring silent warnings. Her vision swam. “Khyren?” Her voice was a rasp.
She scrambled over a pile of broken ferrocrete, ribs aching with each lungful of grit. Bits of his suit, the familiar dark plating, were scattered across the rubble. She saw a hand, then an arm, half-buried under a reinforced beam. He was there. He had to be.
Xiraza clawed at the debris, ignoring the agony in her own body. “Khyren! Answer me!” She tore away a heavy panel, revealing more of him, face down, motionless. His helmet was cracked, obscuring his features. Panic, cold and sharp, pierced through the triumph. She reached for his wrist, fumbling for a pulse. Nothing. She pressed harder, her own fingers trembling violently, hunting for the steady beat that wasn’t there.
