The Appraiser's Wrath

A blinding emerald light erupted from Zhitong’s chest, rippling outwards like heat haze from asphalt. Her vision sharpened, every dust motes suspended in the air suddenly distinct. The air itself thickened, congealing around Granny Yao and her hired ruffians. Yao, dagger poised, slowed to a glacial crawl, her sneer morphing into a grotesquely drawn-out grimace. The mercenaries, their crude clubs frozen mid-swing, became statues caught in a viscous amber. Even their grunts of exertion elongated into a deep, vibrating hum, a sound almost swallowed by the sudden, profound silence. Time had become a molasses river. Only Zhitong moved with unhindered speed, her movements crisp and fluid in the suffocating stillness.
Fury, sharp and cold, lent her an unnerving grace. She darted past the first mercenary, his club inches from impacting the stone floor, and plucked it from his grasp with an almost casual flick. The man's pupils tracked her with impossible slowness. His body, however, lagged moments behind, rendering him helpless. The club, heavy moments ago, felt like a feather. She moved to the next, disarming him of a rusty machete that seemed to crawl through the air. One by one, the five hulking figures were rendered harmless, their weapons scattered across the hall’s grimy floor, their faces contorted in expressions of drawn-out bewilderment.
Her gaze locked onto the dark crystal, still absorbing the faint, wavering energy from her twins. It pulsed with a sickly violet glow. Granny Yao, barely a foot away, was still suspended, the blade of her knife descending with agonizing slowness. Zhitong gripped the pilfered club, its rough surface grounding her. Her movements were precise, timed to the millisecond. With a guttural cry, she brought the club down, not on Yao, but on the dark crystal. The impact was deafening in the time-dilated space, a resonant *CRACK* that seemed to echo for an eternity.
Shards of black obsidian exploded outwards, scattering across the floor like malevolent glitter. The violet glow vanished, replaced by a violent tremor that shook the very air. The temporal distortion flickered, then shattered. Time snapped back with a jarring jolt. The mercenaries, suddenly free, stumbled and crashed to the floor as their frozen movements completed in an instant. Madam Yao, no longer a caricature of rage, staggered back. Her face, moments ago etched with triumph, now sagged, her skin wrinkling like old parchment. Her vibrant hair dulled to a shocking white, her body shrinking, collapsing in on itself. The stolen vitality, violently expelled, left her a withered husk, groaning on the floor, centuries of age catching up to her in a terrifying flash.
He Tingye, released from paralysis, gasped, his powerful body slumping against the altar before he quickly righted himself. He stared at Zhitong, then at the rapidly aging Yao, questions plain in his stare. Zhitong ignored him, her attention solely on Xiaobo and Xiaoxue. She snatched up her babies, clutching them tight. They whimpered, their small bodies trembling, but their eyes were lucid, their hunger-pinched faces showing relief. Her pulse finally began to steady. They were safe. Truly safe.
The emerald light around her dimmed, then receded, the core fragment settling within her. The profound silence of the time-dilated space gave way to the creaking groans of the shrine. Dust rained down from the ceiling in thick clouds. The destruction of the dark crystal had irrevocably destabilized the ancient edifice. A deep, resonant *THUMP* vibrated through the stone floor. Tingye was beside her in an instant, his powerful arm wrapping around her waist, pulling her flush against his solid frame. His other hand cupped the back of her head, his fingers threading through her hair.
His lips descended, urgent and demanding, crushing against hers. It was a kiss born of terror, relief, and an agonizingly slow-burn desire that had finally ignited. His mouth was warm, tasting of dust and the metallic tang of his earlier struggle. Zhitong, still cradling her twins, responded with equal desperation, pouring every ounce of her fear and triumph into the embrace. The world spun, the crumbling sanctuary fading around them. He pulled back, his eyes dark, reflecting the chaos of the room, yet focused only on her.
“We need to move. Now,” he rasped, his voice raw. He scooped up Xiaoxue, securing her against his broad chest, while Zhitong tightened her hold on Xiaobo. The ceiling groaned again, louder this time, a sickening splintering sound echoing from above. Large chunks of plaster and stone began to fall. They sprinted for the front entrance, the only way out, dodging falling debris. The massive, ornate doors, once a symbol of the temple’s ancient grandeur, now seemed a looming death trap.
Just as they reached the threshold, a horrifying metallic screech ripped through the air. Outside, a hulking, mud-splattered truck, one Zhitong recognized as belonging to the Fang clan’s transport business, skidded to a halt directly in front of the exit. Madam Fang, her face a mask of avarice, jumped from the driver's side, Fang Jiali scrambling out after her. Grinning with malicious delight, they locked their gazes onto Zhitong.
“Thought you could escape with *our* possessions, did you?” Madam Fang shrieked, her voice shrill with triumph. “Not a chance, you thieving widow!” With a cruel, knowing grin, she slammed the truck into reverse, ramming it against the temple’s already weakened stone archway. The roar of the engine filled the air, cutting off any hope of escape. The Fangs then leapt back into the cabin, locking the doors, effectively barricading the only exit. The entire building shuddered, the ceiling above them beginning its inevitable collapse.
