Chapter 1: A Throne of White Ashes

1.2k words

Heavy silver chimes echoed through the obsidian cathedral, marking the third hour of delay. Whispers rippled through the hundreds of high-ranking wolves packed into the pews. Kai stood at the altar, his posture rigid, shoulders squared like a soldier awaiting a siege. A thick vein throbbed violently at his temple. His jaw was locked so tight his back teeth ground together, sending sharp jolts of irritation up his skull. Guests shifted in their velvet seats, their scents of anxiety and curiosity blending into a sour stench that filled the massive hall. Nobody dared look Kai directly in the eyes. They knew his reputation. They knew what happened to those who wasted his time, especially on the day he was meant to claim his Luna. Anger rolled off him in waves, heavy and suffocating. His hands, clad in black leather gloves, clenched into fists so tight the seams groaned under the strain. Control was his sanctuary, his weapon, his identity. He had spent his entire life mastering his body, his wolf, and his environment. If he could mimic any combat style, any silver-tongued negotiation, any physical feat just by watching it once, he could certainly control his own wedding day. Yet, his bride was making a public mockery of him. His inner wolf clawed at his ribs, furious at the disrespect. "Where is she?" Kai’s voice dropped to a dangerous, low vibration that rattled the glass chalices on the offering table. Marcus, his Beta, stepped forward from the shadows, his face pale under the flickering candlelight. "Her father claims there is a slight delay with her gown, Alpha. They are in the private sanctuary." "A delay." Kai sneered, his fingers clenching tighter. "Bring her to me," Kai ordered, his voice cutting through the ambient noise of the cathedral like a scalpel. "Now, Marcus. Before I paint these white stone floors with her father’s blood." --- Black soot drifted through the air of the bride's private dressing sanctuary like charred snow. Ruined silk and scorched lace lay scattered across the polished marble floor. Evelyn choked on the thick, acrid smoke, her hands trembling as she clutched a torn piece of her sister’s wedding veil. "You have to do this, Evelyn," her mother hissed, her manicured fingers digging mercilessly into Evelyn’s bare shoulders. "Victoria is gone. She fled. If we do not present a bride to the Alpha, he will tear our pack to shreds." "I cannot," Evelyn whispered, her voice cracking as she stared at her reflection in the soot-covered mirror. She looked nothing like her dazzling sister. Her hair was a tangled mess, her pale skin smudged with ash from the sudden fire that had consumed Victoria's belongings. "You will," her father growled, his hand coming down hard on the dressing table. "He demands a Laurent daughter. He does not care which one. Wear the veil. Hide your face. By the time he realizes the truth, the contract will be sealed." Evelyn’s chest squeezed, panic clawing at her throat. They were offering her up as a lamb to a slaughterhouse. Everyone knew Kai was a monster dressed in tailor-made suits, a ruthless beast who ruled with an iron fist. They had always treated her like an afterthought, a shadow to Victoria's brilliant sun. Now, they wanted her to burn in Victoria's place. A sudden, violent crash shook the walls of the sanctuary. Splinters of heavy oak blasted inward, raining down on the ruined room. Kai stood in the doorway, his massive frame blocking out the light from the hallway. His eyes glowed a lethal, predatory gold. His chest rose and fell in heavy, silent strokes of fury. Fear paralyzed the room instantly. Evelyn's parents scrambled backward, abandoning her to stand alone amidst the ruins of her sister’s sanctuary. Kai stepped inside, his heavy boots crunching on the charred debris. His gaze swept over the black ashes, the scorched walls, and finally settled on Evelyn. "Where is Victoria?" Kai’s voice was a low, lethal purr. Nobody answered. He stepped closer, his aura expanding until the air became too heavy to breathe. Evelyn felt her knees buckle under the sheer weight of his Alpha pressure. She forced herself to remain upright, though her legs shook violently. "I asked a question," Kai said, his eyes locking onto Evelyn’s pale face. He saw the soot on her cheeks, the torn silk in her hands. To him, it looked like a battlefield. It looked like a calculated coup. "She is... she is not here, Alpha," her father stammered, sweat pouring down his face. "But we have Evelyn. She is pure. She is ready to take her sister's place." Kai laughed, a dry, humorless sound that sent shivers down Evelyn's spine. He ignored the older man, keeping his focus entirely on Evelyn. With a swift, brutal movement, he closed the distance between them. His hand shot out, grabbing her shoulder and forcing her down. Evelyn hit the cold, ash-covered marble floor with a dull thud. Pain flared in her knees, but she didn’t make a sound. She bit her inner cheek, tasting copper. "Look at me," Kai commanded, towering over her like an executioner. Evelyn kept her eyes fixed on the black boots in front of her. Her silence only fueled his rage. He saw her trembling, her fragile frame looking so small against the backdrop of destruction. His inner wolf sneered inside his mind. *Weak. She is nothing. A useless, trembling rabbit trying to sit on a throne of wolves.* Kai despised weakness. He had spent his childhood purging every ounce of it from his own soul. Seeing this fragile girl on her knees, pretending she could replace the fierce Luna he had chosen, disgusted him. "You did this," Kai snarled, bending down to her level, his face inches from hers. "You burned her things. You chased her away. You thought you could orchestrate this little tragedy and steal the Luna crown for yourself." Evelyn closed her eyes, refusing to let the tears fall. Her silence was her only shield. She knew that if she spoke, if she showed her terror, he would feed on it. "Speak!" Kai roared, his voice shaking the very foundations of the room. "Confess your little plot, Evelyn. Tell me how you got rid of your sister so you could climb into my bed." He reached down, his fingers wrapping around her delicate neck. The heat of his palm was scalding against her cold skin. His grip tightened, cutting off her air, forcing her head back. He expected her to beg. He expected her to scream, to cry, to claw at his hand the way every other weak creature did when faced with his wrath. Instead, her eyes fluttered open. They were wide, dark, and utterly devoid of fear. There was only a deep, bottomless exhaustion in their depths. Kai paused, his grip tightening just a fraction more as he waited for the inevitable panic to set in. But it never came. She simply looked at him, her lips parting slightly as she breathed through her nose. A strange, cold sensation prickled at the edge of Kai’s mind, but he brushed it aside, focused entirely on breaking her. She didn't fight him. She didn't even try to pull his hand away from her throat. Instead, she leaned into his touch slightly, as if the pain of his grip was the only real thing left in her world. Kai wraps his hand around Evelyn's neck, only to watch her look up with eyes devoid of fear, whispering, 'You are hunting a ghost, Alpha, and she left me to pay her debt.'
