Chapter 6 of 10

Ashes of Vengeance

983 words

*“I only stole it to save your life, you fool.”* Her words hung in the sulfur-heavy air of the hall. Korien stood motionless as the iron door clanged shut behind her. Nymm's gloved fingers still rested on his shoulder. A weapon. The formula Korien had hunted down to avenge his ruined pride was already bound for the provost's vivisection vaults. Korien knocked Nymm's arm aside. He didn’t wait for a reply, didn’t acknowledge the murmuring crowd or the Wardens. He simply turned, moving with a blind, desperate urgency, pushing through the throngs of gala attendees, their faces blurring into a sea of judgment. He bolted into the damp streets of Ghest, throat burning as he took the stone steps three at a time toward the sunken canal basin where her cellar leaned into the mud. The heavy door, once secured with her crude but effective wards, now hung askew, its iron skin warped and scarred. Inside, the damp air reeked of spilled reagents and the acrid tang of suppression gas. Glass vials lay shattered, their iridescent contents staining the cracked flagstones. Pages of notes, meticulously penned, were scattered and trampled, some smeared with an oily, black residue. Her Spectral-Loom, a marvel of intricate brass and polished obsidian, was overturned, its delicate mechanisms crushed. This was not just a ransacking; it was an annihilation. He knelt amidst the wreckage, picking up a shard of cerulean glass, once part of a flask he remembered from their days at the Alabaster Schola. *Schola.* Vessera, younger, less guarded, arguing with him over the precise titration of the *Radianth Heartstone* in his experimental serum. He had been so arrogant then, so convinced of his genius, brushing off her quiet warnings about the unstable resonance of the component. He’d seen her as a rival, an obstacle to his ascent, never as a shield. A glint of aged leather under a fallen workbench caught his eye. A journal. Vessera’s private log, covered in her precise, looping script, secured with a tarnished silver clasp. He recognized the intricate symbol etched into the cover – a stylized knot of intertwining serpents, a private cipher they had devised together during their early days, a shared secret meant only for their eyes. His fingers trembled as he undid the clasp, the familiar pattern of his own creation suddenly mocking him. Before he could open it, a shadow detached itself from the deeper gloom. A small, wiry figure launched itself at him, a glint of sharpened metal preceding the impact. A notched skinning blade bit deep into his left thigh. He cried out, stumbling backward, his hand clamping over the wound. “You! You did this to her!” Pip shrieked, his face a mask of grief and fury, tears tracking paths through the grime on his cheeks. The boy, hardly more than a child, stood over him, clutching the bloodied blade, his small frame shaking with rage. “You set her up! You let them take her to… to *that place*!” Korien struggled to rise, pain lancing up his leg. “Pip, wait! What are you talking about? I… I didn’t know…” “Liar!” Pip lunged again, but Korien, despite his injury, was faster, catching the boy’s wrist. “She saved you! She took the blame for *your* flawed serum! Nymm was going to execute you for the Glass-Walker plague! She sacrificed everything, *everything*, to stop them from cutting you apart!” Pip’s voice cracked, raw with a child’s bottomless despair. “She only stole the *Crimson-Pulse*… she modified it… to undo what *your* experiments did!” The blade clattered to the floor as Korien released the boy’s wrist, the boy’s words echoing the accusation Vessera had whispered. *“I only stole it to save your life.”* It clicked into place with horrifying clarity. His serum. His flawed, ambitious, unstable serum. The Glass-Walkers. It wasn’t a coincidence; it was a consequence. He scrambled for the journal, ignoring Pip’s sobs, his fingers fumbling at the silver clasp. He flipped through the familiar cipher, his mind racing to decode the first few lines of Vessera’s meticulous notes. The script was frantic here, unlike her usual careful hand. *“Korien’s Phase-Coalescence Serum… resonance instability… accelerated cellular petrification… early Glass-Walker symptoms observed in test subjects. Nymm’s interest is predatory. He will execute Korien to suppress the failure and seize the patent. The Crimson-Pulse formula… only viable counter… must be modified… will take the blame… for Korien’s sake…”* Each word was a hammer blow, shattering the edifice of his vengeance. He saw it all now: Vessera, not a thief, but a protector. Not a rival, but a shield. She had seen his impending ruin, the monstrous mutation his hubris had unleashed, and had willingly stepped into the maw of the beast to save him. She had borne the shame, the exile, the constant threat, all to protect him from the truth of his own disastrous invention. He, the architect of her suffering, had been the beneficiary of her ultimate sacrifice. The journal slipped from his nerveless fingers, falling into a puddle of spilled reagent. Blood soaked hot through the wool of his trousers. His vengeance, a gilded snare woven with lies, had not only trapped Vessera but had irrevocably damned himself. A bitter, metallic taste filled his mouth – the taste of regret, of a life he had gleefully destroyed for a phantom grievance. He had delivered the one person who truly cared for him into Nymm’s dissecting theater, believing her a villain when she had been a selfless martyr. His gaze fell upon a heavy, lead-lined box beneath the workbench, half-hidden by debris. He remembered it. A storage unit for volatile compounds, for illicit materials. He dragged the lead chest into the lantern light. The Alabaster sub-crypts had eight-inch iron gates, but their foundations ran on dry mortar and brine. Korien hauled himself upright against the wall, seized the brass handles of the explosive canisters, and set to work.
