Chapter 15 of 20
Aetheric Mishaps and Unintended Pyrotechnics

Two days after the dubious celebration of his newfound 'celebrity,' Jory Finch found himself back in the familiar, if entirely uninspiring, confines of his allocated dwelling in the lower spires of Aethelgard. The air, as always, carried the faint, metallic tang of refined Aether and the distant hum of the city’s vast energy grids. He stared with an intensity usually reserved for the most perplexing of broken arcane artifacts at his manifestation, a wisp of coiling dark mist he’d reluctantly named Aether-Wisp, who floated before him.
Aether-Wisp, equally serious, returned the gaze, its luminous core fixed on the small, crystalline object hovering just above Jory’s workbench. It was a peculiar thing, this object. A dark, unsettling crimson, yet it shone with a translucent amber glow, like fresh, spilled blood, if fresh blood decided to emit an unsettling internal light. This, Jory mused, was the latest unasked-for complication in his life – a 'rare purple item' spat out by his second disastrous foray into the Arcane Scryer's Infusion Lottery.
His current balance, a pathetic sum given his recent expenditures, flickered on his wrist-comm: `[Aether-Scrip Credits: 270]`.
The item itself, an ‘Aether-Confection’ crafted from something called a 'Crimson Bloom-Crystal,' came with its own cryptic data-scroll:
`[Crimson Bloom-Crystal: Contains reactive Aetheric compounds that stimulate latent energy channels, boosting the manifestation’s volatile Aetheric output to a certain extent. (Rumor has it they call this a “dragonfruit” in some forgotten era? And it’s sweet?)]`
Jory sighed. Sweet? The thing looked like it could melt through plasteel. Crimson Bloom-Crystals were a notorious rarity, almost never found on the open Aetheric exchange, prized (if you could call it that) for their unpredictable, potent effects on manifestations. And Jory, in his infinite misfortune, had somehow pulled two of them from the cosmic slot machine that was the Lottery.
His second ten-spin had been a veritable cornucopia of unwanted potential: an Aetheric Anchor (for deep-void scouting, which Jory had no intention of doing), an Arcane Resonator (for tracking elusive Aether-flux signatures, equally useless), and then, those two ominous Bloom-Crystals.
He’d unceremoniously shoved the Anchor and Resonator into a dusty corner, categorizing them as ‘future disposal problems.’ The main prizes, those two glowing, blood-red Bloom-Crystals, had demanded immediate, if grudging, attention.
Crafting them into refined Aether-Confections had been an experience Jory hoped never to repeat. He’d cranked his newly acquired, ridiculously oversized Nutrient-Glyph Pulverizer to full power, processing the raw crystals in a process that had caused the air in his dwelling to crackle with uncontrolled Pyric Aether. His neighbors, he suspected, had come perilously close to reporting him to the Guild for 'unauthorized arcane disturbance.' The first attempt, predictably, had failed spectacularly, leaving him with a scorch mark on his pristine (well, previously pristine) countertop and a lingering smell of ozone. His second, desperate attempt had yielded five Crimson Bloom-Confections, each one radiating a low, unsettling heat.
But, he had to admit, the quality of these five was high. His `[Aether-Confection Synthesis Lv3]` skill, another unwanted byproduct of his accidental Arcane Controller career, had apparently paid off.
“Right,” Jory said, his voice clipped, “give it a try. If these things don’t, you know, blow up your internal regulators, I might try to offload a few at the Arcane Market.” The idea of selling these volatile concoctions filled him with a mixture of entrepreneurial dread and financial desperation.
Aether-Wisp nodded, or the equivalent of a nod for a swirling mist creature, extending a trembling tendril of shadow. It hovered, quivering, over the Bloom-Confection for what felt like an eternity. Five seconds stretched into an agonizing silence.
“…Are you going to consume it or just admire its ominous glow?” Jory finally snapped, his patience wearing thin.
A cold sweat, or rather, a visible condensation of super-cooled Aether, dripped from Aether-Wisp's form, landing on its stiff, hovering tendril with a soft `plink`.
With what Jory could only interpret as a deep, nervous intake of breath, Aether-Wisp swiftly absorbed the Crimson Bloom-Confection, its form swirling inward around the glowing crystal before it vanished.
“How does it feel?” Jory asked, leaning forward, an almost morbid curiosity overriding his usual cynicism.
Aether-Wisp’s dark, nebulous form began to visibly deepen in crimson, its internal core pulsing with an angry, intensified glow. Its ethereal eyes, usually a faint amber, widened into bloodshot, fiery orbs.
Then, with a heavy exhalation that vibrated the very air, Aether-Wisp spat out a torrent of dark purple flame that howled from its core! The temperature in the room spiked instantly.
Jory instinctively launched himself sideways, narrowly avoiding the blistering discharge.
The pitch-black flame slammed into the plasteel wall with a resounding `BOOM`, clinging to the surface like a hungry, consuming entity. It burned with a ferocious, unnatural heat, charring the resilient material black within seconds. A acrid smell filled the air.
Silence descended, punctuated only by the crackle of the lingering fire. Aether-Wisp, its form still pulsing with residual energy, blinked innocently, trying its best to appear nonchalant, as if spontaneously combusting the apartment wall was just a Tuesday afternoon activity.
A bead of very real, very human cold sweat trickled down Jory’s forehead.
“The power of that Pyric Infusion,” Jory muttered, staring at the still-smouldering wall. “It’s almost on par with a full Arcane Flare!”
Pyric Infusions, typically a controlled burst of dim blue phosphorescence, were hardly known for their destructive power. They were utility, a minor irritant at best. But this one, supercharged by the Bloom-Confection, had nearly punched a hole clean through his reinforced dwelling unit.
Jory couldn't discern if Aether-Wisp was some kind of arcane prodigy, or if the Crimson Bloom-Confection’s effect was just that intensely, terrifyingly potent. Either way, his earlier cold sweat intensified, hardening his resolve: he was absolutely, unequivocally, not cut out to be an Arcane Controller. The universe, it seemed, had other, far more inconvenient plans.
After a few moments spent wrestling with existential dread and the urge to just pack a bag and disappear into the forgotten lower layers of Aethelgard, Jory finally managed to calm himself. He placed his hands on his hips, surveying the scorched wall with a complex, utterly exasperated expression. Next to him, Aether-Wisp floated, its usual buoyant mist now somewhat deflated, a picture of dejected shame.
“This isn’t really your fault,” Jory sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Looks like I’ll need to keep working on the recipe. Or, you know, just not make them at all.”
He watched Aether-Wisp for a moment. “What? You actually thought it tasted pretty good?”
Jory rubbed his chin thoughtfully. The quality of the Bloom-Confections was undeniably high. What had happened wasn’t a 'side effect' in the typical sense; it was merely the main effect, cranked up to a ludicrous, utterly unsellable degree.
“But with an effect this strong, I can’t sell it!” he muttered, pacing briefly. “I’d be liable for every exploded wall in the spire. If another thermal cascade breaks out, where am I supposed to submit the damage reports?”
Scratching his head, Jory sighed, giving in to the inevitable. “Fine. The remaining four Crimson Bloom-Confections are yours. Just… try not to burn the whole spire down with them.”
Aether-Wisp, its earlier dejection melting away with surprising speed, let out a happy little `hiss` and promptly spirited the remaining four translucent red blocks into a nearby cabinet, carefully tucking them away in a salvaged glass jar. The speed and stealth with which it did so were suspiciously practiced.
Jory let out a short, incredulous laugh. “I’m not going to take them from you, so why hide them so well?”
Aether-Wisp gave Jory a remarkably dismissive glance. `“Hhhssstt!”` (You never know, its gaze seemed to imply, with a healthy dose of Arcane Manifestation distrust.)
That utterly unwarranted, dismissive glance stung Jory deeply. He was, after all, providing the food, the shelter, the increasingly frequent arcane damage repair.
Gritting his teeth, Jory shot back, “Just you wait!” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a Stabilized Pyric Shard, a small, fist-sized crystal glowing with a faint, internal red light. It wasn’t as potent as a raw Flame Shard, but it was still a rare, expensive treat for a manifestation like Aether-Wisp.
Aether-Wisp’s mist form stretched wide, its crimson core flaring as it eyed the Pyric Shard hungrily. It swallowed a glob of condensed Aether, its form undulating with barely contained desire, giving Jory a pitiful, pleading look.
From Aether-Wisp’s internal perspective, Jory imagined, it was probably thinking: *I’m so cute—how can you resist? I’m but a poor, hungry wisp in need of sustenance!*
From Jory’s actual, sensory-overloaded perspective, it was a creepy, dark mist creature staring at him with glowing, bloodshot eyes, drooling noxious vapor nonstop. He shivered.
“Fine, you menace,” Jory muttered, giving in. He tossed the Pyric Shard to Aether-Wisp, which deftly absorbed it with a satisfied `hiss`.
“Consume it sparingly; that cost thousands of Aether-Scrip!” Jory admonished, though he knew it was futile. Realistically, even the manifestations of elite Guild Controllers didn't usually feast on such a lavish diet. It had only been half a month since the Great Flux had upended reality, bringing Aetheric phenomena into everyone’s lives. And Aether-Wisp had already tasted Tier-3 Aetheric Nutrients, Volatile Augment Tincture, Crimson Bloom-Confections… now a Stabilized Pyric Shard. The creature was living a quasi-legendary lifestyle, entirely at Jory’s reluctant expense.
With the Pyric Shard absorbed, Aether-Wisp looked dazedly at Jory’s retreating figure, its internal light softening, its form undulating with an almost wistful emotion. Tears, or what passed for them in a mist-creature, seemed to well up in its ethereal eyes as the long-stray manifestation once again felt the warmth of a home, however begrudgingly provided.
“Wha—don’t just leap on me like that! That dark mist is caustic! Don’t—” Jory yelped as Aether-Wisp decided to express its gratitude by launching itself at him in a noxious cloud. He hated being slimed.
Jory, for his part, harbored a particular disdain for keeping Aether-Wisp cooped up in an Aetheric Containment Sigil. Firstly, he vaguely remembered some ancient, pre-Flux media showing iconic free-ranging manifestations, which had somehow stuck in his cynical mind. Secondly, he felt the Sigils restricted a manifestation’s freedom, giving off a chilling, institutional feel. Of course, compared to the harsh, raw Aetheric environment of the wild, many manifestations actually preferred the security of a Sigil. So, generally, Jory didn’t interfere with Aether-Wisp’s choice to drift about his dwelling, even if it did mean occasionally having to wipe corrosive residue off his datapad.
The next day, as Jory prepared to head to his mandatory Arcane Controller Guild Sector orientation, Aether-Wisp peeked out from the doorway of his dwelling, its form wavering slightly. “Aren’t you coming with me?” Jory asked, genuinely surprised. The Guild Sector was rarely *this* boring.
`“Hhhssstt! Hhhssstt!”` Aether-Wisp hissed, a clear note of refusal in its voice, followed by a series of small, determined gestures towards the Pyric Shard’s cabinet.
“Alright, stay safe at home,” Jory conceded, adjusting the strap of his knapsack. Then, his expression turning strangely stern, he added, “And try not to incinerate anything again! The Guild Tenement Overseer already gave me an earful after last time.”
After that spontaneous Pyric Infusion incident with the wall, Jory’s Aether-Scrip balance had plummeted by another 500, leaving him with barely 4,000. If he didn't stumble into some easy, high-paying task soon, he’d be in serious financial trouble, possibly even facing an eviction notice from the Guild, which was a bureaucratic nightmare he absolutely could not afford.
Aether-Wisp’s shadowy form momentarily flickered with what Jory interpreted as guilt, and it nodded frantically under his scrutinizing gaze, its ethereal eyes wide.
As Jory left, the automated door hissing shut behind him, Aether-Wisp let out an almost audible sigh of relief. It darted to the cabinet, deftly retrieved the Stabilized Pyric Shard, and placed it carefully on the floor. Then, with an eerie, almost human precision, it flipped open the `Arcane Manifestation Compendium` to the dog-eared section on “Pyric Infusion” and nodded slowly, its luminous core pulsing with newfound determination.
The qualifying rounds for the Guild Enclave Trials were tomorrow. Its Master, Jory, had his own work to do, his own cynical, anti-heroic destiny to begrudgingly avoid. Aether-Wisp couldn’t take up his time. It had to train hard, and prepare on its own!
Drawing on the Pyric Shard’s stored energy, a surge of fiery Aetheric power flooded the dark mist surrounding Aether-Wisp, turning its form a deep, pulsating crimson. Three cold, black flames, miniature versions of its devastating attack, slowly coalesced and emerged around its core.
`[Ignition]`, `[Adhesion]`, `[Scorch]`—these were the basic Pyric Infusion traits, as outlined by the esteemed Eldrin in the Compendium. Different Controllers favored different strategies; some integrated `[Debilitation]` into their Pyric Infusions, others enhanced its `[Blast]` effect. But Aether-Wisp, it seemed, was aiming for pure, unadulterated destructive force.
At that moment, the raging fire elements coursing through its form caused the three black flames to burn at intense, almost unbearable temperatures. The dark mist of Aether-Wisp’s body thickened, growing denser, as it gulped down another Crimson Bloom-Confection it had retrieved from its secret stash.
The temperature in the dwelling rose rapidly. With a sudden, explosive `BOOM`, the Stabilized Pyric Shard shattered into a thousand glittering fragments! The three nascent Pyric Infusions fused, bursting forth into an inferno of clashing, uncontrolled flames that consumed the shattered crystal.
`[Pyric Infusion: Overcharge!]`
Returning to his dwelling later that cycle, backpack slung over his shoulder, Jory noticed the telltale wail of sirens echoing through the spires. Fire suppression Aether-Golems were already deployed on a ladder, directing their powerful hydrants at a building several levels above. A crowd had gathered, murmuring, and Jory, ever the pragmatist, was vaguely pleased it wasn’t his problem. Curious, he asked a nearby Aethelgard Watchman, “Which dwelling is aflame, sir?”
The Watchman, a grizzled veteran with a permanently weary expression, looked at Jory with a complicated, almost pitying gaze. “Sixth floor. Yours.”
Under Aether-Wisp’s somewhat tenuous control, the fire hadn’t escalated beyond its initial destructive burst, and a quick-thinking neighbor had initiated an emergency call to the Arcane Council’s rapid response unit. Still, Jory received a stern lecture from a Guild Enforcer, followed by an additional levy of 1,000 Aether-Scrip for 'negligent arcane containment.'
A dejected Jory and a thoroughly abashed Aether-Wisp returned to the apartment, which now bore even more extensive scorch marks on its walls and ceiling. “Good thing the Guild Tenement Overseer didn’t revoke my tenancy after this,” Jory muttered, massaging his temples. He glanced at Aether-Wisp, which was curled into a trembling, penitent ball of mist in the corner.
Jory sighed. “This one’s on me, I suppose. I shouldn’t have left you alone with unstable arcane reagents. My bad.” He patted the downcast Aether-Wisp, trying to sound reassuring. “It’s alright. Don’t dissipate into a cloud of shame. Let’s clean up, and later I’ll take you out for a late-cycle nutrient infusion, okay?”
Later, in a moment of utterly misguided bravado, Jory posted to his Aether-Net comms channel:
`[Jory Finch: My dwelling is currently undergoing unscheduled thermal recalibration (video attached)]`
Moments later, a reply:
`[Targon: Impressive Arcane Flare power!]`
Followed swiftly by Eldrin, the perpetually knowledgeable arcane theorist:
`[Eldrin: Judging by the duration, it’s probably Pyric Infusion.]`
Then, the inevitable:
`[Targon has been muted by the admin for two hours.]`
Jory received a private message from Lyra:
`[Lyra: Gold—I mean, Targon. He just joined the channel, and he’s already been banned!]`
`[Lyra: …Try to be more mindful!]`
`[Targon: Then why didn’t Eldrin get banned???]`
Somewhere in the higher spires, Targon stared fiercely at his dimmed avatar on the Aether-Net display. With a snarl, he slammed his Arcane Pool Cue on the polished grav-table with a resounding `BANG`, clenching his teeth. “Even if it’s just a simulation…” he muttered, his eyes alight with competitive fervor. “I’m going to out-rank Jory Finch!”
