Chapter 12 of 20
The Sprite's Grand Plan
2.7k words
The annual “Apprentice Aether-Weave Exhibition” was, by all accounts, a venerable institution. Geared towards neophyte Aether-Weavers, it typically drew third-cycle Guild apprentices and first-year Collegiate initiates from across the Aethelgard Spire-Cities. As an officially sanctioned event by the Arcane Councils, a strong showing could significantly aid in securing one's Arcane Adept Certification, propelling an individual into the hallowed (and highly inconvenient) ranks of recognized power.
Jory Finch, however, had precisely zero intentions of becoming an official Aether-Weaver, nor did he possess the slightest inclination to participate in any competition, venerable or otherwise. His ambitions were, as he often stated, decidedly horizontal, focusing primarily on the acquisition of a comfortable couch and the undisturbed consumption of synth-noodles. Grand destiny, as far as Jory was concerned, was a colossal bureaucratic nightmare waiting to happen, replete with forms, expectations, and entirely too much forced socialization.
It was, fittingly, a sweltering cycle in the lower strata of the Scholarly Spire, a humid oppression that seeped into even the most fortified personal space. Inside his modest utility habitation unit, a battered old ventilation glyph whirred with a tired, asthmatic groan, doing its best to circulate the perpetually recycled air.
Jory was seated at his aether-console, fingers skimming across the illuminated projection, meticulously editing his next data-stream for upload. The mundane, profitable rhythm of content creation was, he felt, a perfectly respectable ambition. It required minimal interaction with actual people, involved complex but predictable Aether-logic, and, crucially, did not involve wielding power that could accidentally vaporize half a city block.
His Umbral Sprite, however, seemed to have different priorities. Currently, it was positioned directly in front of the wheezing ventilation glyph, its incorporeal maw stretched wide. Wisps of its characteristic black mist drifted out, catching the weak currents, echoing uncannily as the glyph struggled on. It was, Jory had decided, an exercise in atmospheric mood setting, even if the mood it set was generally one of mild existential dread.
In terms of *The Umbral Sprite’s Primer*, that increasingly tattered tome that had inexplicably appeared in his life, the Sprite’s progress had, rather alarmingly, reached the combat section. Specifically, the chapter titled “Directing Your Umbral Sprite in Aetheric Confrontation.” Jory squinted at the scrolling text on his data-slate, the words blurring slightly from the heat and his own exasperation. The fact that the Sprite was now actively *studying* combat strategies was, frankly, terrifying.
“Umbral Sprites,” the guide declared in Archivist Kael’s dry, academic tone, “possess a highly active disposition, often exhibiting... *unorthodox* behaviors in engagements.”
“Ghast!” the Sprite interjected, its form momentarily solidifying into a more defined, grinning countenance. *That actually makes sense!* the spectral chime in Jory’s mind translated, much to his internal exasperation. The creature seemed to take pride in its own unpredictability.
“Thus,” the text continued, entirely oblivious to its subject’s agreement, “rather than imposing rigid schematic protocols, it is advisable to cultivate the Sprite’s innate Aetheric instincts, allowing its unique nature to inform its combat efficacy…”
“Gengarrr?” The Sprite tilted its head, a question forming in its mist. *How precisely does one cultivate inherent chaos?* Jory could almost hear its unvoiced query. He had often wondered the same thing.
“Each Umbral Sprite’s temperament is unique, and its Aetheric combat style will vary accordingly; discerning its specialized area of arcane aptitude is paramount.”
“Gengarrr, gengarrr!” The Sprite bobbed enthusiastically, a mischievous glee now radiating from its form. *Got it, got it!* it chirped in Jory’s mind, as if it had completely untangled the complexities of esoteric Aetheric theory and was now ready to apply them to… whatever it was it did.
Floating mid-air, the Umbral Sprite wore an undeniably smug expression, its translucent form practically radiating self-satisfaction. It genuinely seemed to believe it had completely figured things out. Jory merely sighed. It was certainly learning, that much was undeniable. In just two brief cycles, the Sprite had not only mastered what the Primer referred to as “Aether-Fog Veil” (a delightfully disorienting ability, if you asked Jory’s hypothetical opponents) but was now adept with “Nocturne Shadow” (a particularly insidious dark-energy assault). He’d just wanted a quiet life, not a sentient cloud of malevolence with a burgeoning combat repertoire.
And all this knowledge, of course, came from *The Umbral Sprite’s Primer*, written by Archivist Kael. The physical tome, currently resting on the edge of Jory’s console, was now so thoroughly worn and, regrettably, slimed from the Sprite’s incessant licking that the etched text was blurry in places. Jory couldn’t help but marvel, in a deeply ironic fashion, at the sheer efficacy of the method. This was the real deal—the creature was literally absorbing the material, quite possibly through osmosis, if not direct consumption.
Glancing over from his work, Jory noticed the Sprite’s spectral glow seemed to dim slightly. He was, to its perception, still focused intently on his aether-console, tapping away at his keys, entirely engrossed in his decidedly non-combatant pursuits.
The Sprite, looking a bit deflated, laid the slimed Primer open on its face, its form starting to drift lazily in and out of the faint shadows cast by Jory’s console lights, an obvious display of profound boredom. It had, Jory recalled with a pang of, well, *something* approaching concern, exhausted their reserves of Synth-Nourish Liquid, and the mysterious Cerulean Elixir was also entirely depleted. That particular ‘Swiftness Draught’ had, in fairness, noticeably enhanced the Sprite’s black mist speed. As the Sprite naturally possessed the ability to merge into ambient shadows, its stealthiness had improved significantly, making it even harder for Jory to occasionally misplace it in his own small habitation unit.
While idly blowing a small, shimmering bubble of Aetheric mist, the Sprite’s glowing eyes suddenly fixed on a particular line in the Primer. Its spectral form perked up immediately, radiating a renewed, if slightly manic, energy.
“How to handle your Umbral Sprite’s Aetheric Malaise.”
“Gengarrr!” The Sprite chimed excitedly in Jory’s mind. *What’s the solution! Give me the solution to this… malaise!* It seemed to perceive its current state as a grave medical emergency.
“First, utilize unique artifacts and energy-infused sustenance to bolster your Umbral Sprite’s resonant energy and general well-being.”
“Gah!” The Sprite's eyes went wide. *But we are utterly bereft of sustenance! We are out of everything at home! Σ(°△°|||)* Jory suppressed a groan. He was quite aware of the pantry’s shortcomings, thank you very much.
“Second, engage in shared excursions or activities, such as Aether-foraging in the lower districts or tranquil Spire-gazing from the observation decks with your Umbral Sprite.”
“Ghast…” The Sprite slumped, its mist thinning. *He’s totally ignoring me. (╬▔皿▔)* The accusation, ringing clear in Jory’s thoughts, was both unfair and entirely accurate. He *was* ignoring it, in the interest of earning credits to *buy* more sustenance.
“Third, invigorate your Umbral Sprite through the exhilaration of victory in Aetheric confrontation.”
“Gengarrr!” The Sprite’s mist solidified again, its eyes burning with zealous fervor. *That’s it! (✪ω✪)* The exclamation echoed with the conviction of a revelation, a cosmic truth suddenly made manifest. This, apparently, was the path to alleviating Aetheric malaise: wanton spectral violence.
Ignoring Jory’s attempts to communicate that ‘Aetheric confrontation’ was largely antithetical to a ‘comfortable, independent living,’ the Sprite pondered this profound insight for a while. Then, a spark of memory, like a distant beacon, ignited in its glowing eyes. It suddenly remembered seeing something about a competition on Jory’s data-slate yesterday. A competition that involved… confrontation.
Floating slowly, with an air of calculated innocence, the Sprite drifted to Jory’s side. It extended a translucent limb, gently licking his cheek, its mist cold and clammy against his skin. Then it blinked, its large, glowing eyes fixed expectantly on his face.
“Oh,” Jory said, instantly comprehending the gesture, a familiar request. “Hungry, are we? You can use the comm-unit to order a synth-meal delivery, you know.” He pointed to the data-slate, assuming its usual, straightforward motivations.
The Sprite, now in possession of Jory’s personal comm-unit, couldn’t help but emit a series of soft, chittering sounds that, to Jory’s ears, sounded suspiciously like suppressed laughter. It was not a pleasant sound. It was the sound of something vaguely malevolent that had just pulled off a successful, if minor, deception.
“...What in the Aether-flux is that sound?” Jory asked, turning fully from his console, a ripple of unease starting in his gut. “Why are you chortling like a reanimated Guild-Specter?”
Grinning, the Sprite merely shifted its form, moving slightly away from Jory’s direct line of sight. It then began swiping through the comm-unit’s holographic screen with its long, spectral tongue. A Guild-Mistress Solana’s Aether-Sculpture Showcase? Not this… Arch-Technician Lyra’s Circuitry Exhibition? Not this either… Just what kind of bizarre data-streams does he normally peruse? The Sprite’s face formed into a puzzled, almost judgmental, expression, then its eyes sparkled with renewed purpose.
Floating prominently on the display, a banner flashed:
**[“Apprentice Aether-Weave Exhibition — Inviting all aspiring Junior Aether-Weavers to participate!”]**
Registering, the Sprite quickly deduced, would require Jory’s Guild-ID. It zipped around the small habitation unit, rummaging through various drawers and discarded data-slates, sending loose cables skittering across the floor. Finally, after a brief but frantic search, it unearthed Jory’s official Guild-ID card, tucked away beneath a pile of unread circulars.
Clutching the card in its misty grip, the Sprite painstakingly, meticulously, filled out the online registration form. Its sharp, spectral teeth, usually reserved for more… *direct* applications of force, proved surprisingly adept at navigating the holographic interface, if a little slow. It took over half an hour, a monumental effort for a creature of such impatient disposition, before it finally emitted a relieved sigh, the form successfully submitted.
Almost instantly, a notification pinged on the comm-unit’s display:
**[“Mr. Jory Finch, your registration has been approved. Your participant ID is: 3534”]**
**[“The preliminary round will commence next Quadrant-Cycle. Please note the schedule.”]**
Satisfied, the Umbral Sprite’s glowing eyes burned with a fierce, unyielding determination. *I am going to win this, for my Master!* it declared in Jory’s mind, a resolute chime that vibrated with alarming conviction. Jory, oblivious to the seismic shift in his immediate future, merely grumbled about the lingering taste of phantom saliva on his cheek.
Having finally finished editing the last sequence of his data-stream, Jory stretched, his spine popping in protest. He rotated his shoulders, feeling the tension drain away. That, at least, was a task completed. One step closer to his comfortable, independent living. He turned around, expecting to see the Sprite drifting aimlessly, perhaps attempting to phase through the wall again, but instead found it deeply absorbed in *The Umbral Sprite’s Primer* once more, its attention utterly consumed.
Jory’s feelings became, as they often did around the Sprite, slightly complicated. Without any direct involvement or even explicit instruction from Jory, the Sprite was taking care of its own sustenance acquisition, its combat tactics, and its rigorous, self-directed training regimen. Jory’s expression turned particularly strange, a mix of mild awe and profound existential discomfort. For a fleeting, disquieting moment, he felt like he was just… dead weight, an unnecessary accessory to a creature that was, quite clearly, destined for far more than simply being his mildly annoying roommate.
“System,” Jory muttered aloud, more to himself than to the ambient Aetheric network, “can you show me the Umbral Sprite’s currently known Aetheric maneuvers?” He needed to know precisely what kind of existential threat he was unknowingly housing.
**[Would you like to spend 500 Credits to unlock Adept-Tier access to the Arcanum Index?]** the console’s passive interface responded, its holographic text shimmering into existence.
“Yes,” Jory sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Is there even a Paragon-Tier at this point? Just get on with it.”
**[Querying…Target confirmed!]**
**[Type: Umbral + Toxin. Maneuvers: Aether-Fog Veil, Spectral Grasp, Binding Gaze, Pyroclastic Whisper, Umbral Curse, Nocturne Shadow.]**
After seeing the displayed list of maneuvers, Jory felt a cold dread settle in his stomach. In reality, as opposed to theoretical Guild-schemas, there was no arbitrary four-maneuver limit, so the sheer number of known abilities a creature possessed could directly reflect its Aetheric potency. Most of these maneuvers were likely learned with the help of Archivist Kael’s Primer, but even so, the breadth of its repertoire was impressive enough to shock Jory into a momentary, wide-eyed silence.
“It’s genuinely this potent?” he finally managed, a faint, disbelieving whisper escaping his lips. “And it merely… attached itself to me. Without so much as a ‘by your leave’ or a formal application.”
Looking over the list again, a wry, humorless smile spread across Jory’s face. “Obnoxious. It’s absolutely, fundamentally obnoxious!”
Of the six maneuvers listed, a full five were designed to inflict debilitating status conditions. If the Umbral Sprite weren’t *his* Umbral Sprite, Jory thought, he’d genuinely feel a profound sympathy for any poor sod unfortunate enough to face it. Aether-Fog Veil caused confusion, Spectral Grasp could induce paralysis, and Pyroclastic Whisper inflicted a persistent burn. Binding Gaze prevented any form of escape, while Umbral Curse continually drained an opponent’s Aetheric stability, a slow, agonizing demise. If you added ‘Toxin Cloud’ and ‘Dreamweave’ to this already insidious mix… then it would be an absolute nightmare, a spectral tormentor of unparalleled irritation.
Status conditions, in real-world Aetheric confrontation, could stack. This was precisely why Jory’s own ‘Barrier-Warding-Degeneration’ data-stream, a tutorial on how to drive opponents absolutely mad with layers of passive damage and defensive wards, was so notoriously despised. Now, Jory realized with a growing sense of horrified fascination, he had stumbled upon a new, even more profound way to push these annoying tactics to their absolute, infuriating extreme. Confusion, paralysis, burns, destabilization… all these vile status effects could stack up, turning any engagement into a slow, inexorable descent into utter despair for the victim. The Umbral Sprite truly was the undisputed king of dirty tricks, and it had somehow chosen *him*.
Despite having unknowingly set the general training direction for his spectral companion, Jory still didn’t want to actively *train*. Becoming an official Aether-Weaver just didn’t pay, not in the comfortable, independent, low-stress way Jory preferred. Streaming to make easy credits—that was far more his speed, his preferred path to a life of quiet anonymity. His data-stream subscribers were already at 80,000, just a bit more to hit the coveted goal of a face reveal, a momentous occasion he secretly dreaded but also, perversely, looked forward to.
At this critical juncture, as Jory was mentally calculating his projected earnings, the system, with its impeccable timing, issued a new mission notification.
**[Mission: “The Un-Zenith Streamer”]**
**[Mission Details: Publish a data-stream that achieves over a million views within a single cycle.]**
**[Mission Rewards: 1000 Credits, Random Adept-Tier Skill Codex, Random Exotic-Grade Artifact.]**
Jory’s eyes widened slightly. He had already experienced the benefits of the system’s items; the Swiftness Draught alone had greatly increased the Sprite’s speed, making it even more of a nuisance. If he could get his hands on a high-value item, perhaps something worth hundreds of thousands of credits, he’d be set for life. Retirement, here he came. He just needed to produce a viral sensation.
The data-stream Jory had just finished editing, the one currently queued for upload, was exactly what he planned to post. It was a masterpiece of strategic irritation, a testament to his own particular brand of Aetheric cynicism.
**[“Arcanist Finch’s Combat Compendium 04: The Obfuscation Formation”]**
If there was anything more annoying, more soul-crushingly frustrating than a 'Barrier-Warding-Degeneration' strategy, Jory posited in his stream, it was an Obfuscation Formation. And the undisputed leader of such a maddening setup was none other than what he affectionately (and venomously) called “the pink aberration,” the Sentinel Golem. Holding a Warding Circlet, the Sentinel Golem boasted sky-high Aether-resistance and could endlessly raise its distortion field with an ability called Obscuring Veil. You couldn’t hit it, you couldn’t wear it down, and somehow, it still managed to deal good damage when it decided to. The Sentinel Golem might just be the most infuriating construct ever devised by the Arcane Councils. It was, Jory concluded, his ultimate weapon against ambitious expectations.
A knowing, almost wicked, smile spread across Jory’s face. This video, he felt, was pure, unadulterated Jory Finch. He moved his optical cursor, clicking “Initiate Upload.”
