Chapter 4 of 10
The Vanguard's Trap
830 words
The black ichor on his fingertip pulsed, a miniature starless void. Varis stared at it, the acrid scent of ozone and something impossibly ancient rising to his nose. The apparatus of the grand design had named him a vessel, a sluice. Morzan had left the archive unlatched, almost inviting him to take the prize. A trap, or an engineered gambit? Varis wiped the drop against his coarse trousers, the weave swallowing the slick residue. The chill of the stone chamber pressed close. He had to sever the tether before it swallowed his will entirely, but survival demanded strength.
His sentence arrived with the morning brass. Instructor Kaelen, rigid in charcoal wool, addressed the muster in the lower yard. "Korveng," the officer said, iron in his flat tone. "Your recent trial raises questions. Command finds your presence here irregular." Scorn rippled across the front ranks, steel plate catching the dull phosphor glare. "To test your worth, you draw today's extraction sortie into the ash flats. A solo assignment. Support-tier protocols remain mandatory. No deviation. No heroics." Kaelen's pet front-liners, Gorvan and Riel, grinned from the flank.
The Wastes stretched out as calcified timber and acid-chewed limestone beneath a curdled sky. The ground was a rutted muck slick with luminous lichen. Varis carried only a standard field kit and an iron pry-pick, acutely conscious of the unseen scrutiny bearing down upon his neck.
The docket was plain: harvest six unbroken shell-plates from the scuttling vermin haunting the trenches. An assignment normally handed to a full squad of frontline shock cadets, never an isolated repair hand.
He picked his footing across slag and shale as the fog licked his ankles. The sulfurous reek preceded the dry rattle of serrated legs on stone. From beneath a shelf of rotting shelf-fungus, the nest boiled over. Hundreds of fist-sized crawlers surged forward, their segmented black husks snapping against the gravel. Curved appendages clicked in the mist, surging in an unbroken rush.
Varis kept his balance, marking joints and soft bellies. He set his boots in the mud and raised the iron pry-pick.
Static snapped across his belt horn. Gorvan's drawl rasped through the speaker: "Korveng, field post Delta-Seven is sealed for overhaul. Reroute to extraction marker Gamma-Nine in three days. Do try to last." The signal died with a rasp of distant chuckles from the ridge behind.
They wanted him devoured, erased without an inquiry. His knuckles tightened until the joints popped.
He dropped the iron tool into the muck. His posture settled low, weight distributed over the balls of his feet. An icy vibration hummed behind his ribs, rattling his collarbones. The beasts surged up the incline, antennae whipping, mandibles dripping brown acid.
Varis hissed through clenched teeth. His right forearm warped outward, marrow and sinew knitting into thick ridges of black bone. His nails stretched into jagged points. A knot of bile surged up his throat; he spat a thick, emerald globule across the vanguard crawler. The acid hissed on contact, melting the hard dorsal shell and turning the underlying organs into foul broth.
[Skill Activated: Corrosive Bile. Target armor integrity compromised.]
He stepped into the swarm without pause. He spat again and again into the throng, filling the trench with the stink of scorched shell and frantic chirping. His bare left hand knocked aside pincer strikes, while his altered right limb absorbed blows against its jagged bone sheath. He did not simply kill; he dismantled them.
[Lore Assimilated: Chitinous Anatomy. Bone-Plating improved.]
He drove his bone-sheathed hand into the thickest cluster, tearing thorax from abdomen. Black slime coated his fingers alongside the green acid and pale hemolymph. A grim clarity sharpened his senses. Within moments, the shale was paved with twitching limbs, corroded husks, and smoking fluids. The few survivors scattered into the rocks. Varis remained standing in the sludge, breath steaming in the chill.
Above the gorge, perched on a slate outcropping, Kaelia Korveng lowered her carbine, fingers stiff against the stock. She had shadowed him from the bastion gates, expecting cowardice or an early death. Instead, she witnessed an anatomy rewriting itself into jagged bone and dissolving armor with ancient bile. This was no approved blessing from the registry; it was an aberration.
The black tar weeping along his knuckle-ridges and the dead stillness in his posture struck her like a blow. The doctrine taught in the upper halls offered no explanation for flesh remade in the image of the pit.
Varis turned at the scrape of gravel above. Gunk dripped from his extended talons, his pupils contracted to needle points against the red rim of his irises.
Kaelia raised her rifle, the cold steel barrel unwavering, pointed directly at his head. Her voice, though strained, was firm. "Varis Korveng. You are wielding abominations. You are a threat to everything the Bastion stands for." She thumbed the safety off. "Submit to the Inquisition, or die in the mud with these things. The choice is yours."
[Hostile detected. Devour to reach 40%?]
