Chapter 1: Fall of Iron

2.2k words

Cold wind howled through the jagged peaks of the Black Spires, carrying the scent of ozone and freshly spilled blood. Rain lashed against the heavy iron doors of the grand hall. Inside, hundreds of disciples stood frozen, their breaths hitching in unison. Ashcroft Gravxe stood at the center of the chamber, his broad shoulders squared and his hand resting on the hilt of his massive greatsword. Pride rolled off him in suffocating waves. He had ruled the Northern Wastes for three decades, crushing anyone who dared question his authority. Tonight, however, a different kind of terror filled the room. Heavy footsteps echoed from the shadows of the high dais. Each step sounded like a hammer striking an anvil, vibrating through the stone floor and rattling the teeth in Shen Jin’s skull. Shen Jin squeezed his hands into tight fists, hiding behind the pillars of the lower gallery. Sweat beaded along his collarbone, soaking his thin linen tunic. He watched the figure emerging from the darkness. Sovereign Kaelen, known across the three realms simply as the Mighty, stepped into the flickering torchlight. His presence alone seemed to warp the very air, compressing the atmosphere until it became hard to breathe. "You summoned me, Ashcroft," Kaelen said, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that demanded absolute obedience. Ashcroft’s jaw clenched so hard a vein throbbed violently at his temple. He tried to maintain his towering posture, but his knees trembled under the sudden weight of Kaelen’s spiritual pressure. "I did, Sovereign. We negotiated terms. The tribute from the lower provinces belongs to—" "Belongs to whoever has the strength to keep it," Kaelen interrupted, taking another step forward. Suddenly, the gravity in the room seemed to multiply tenfold. Ashcroft gasped, his legs buckling. The greatsword slipped from his numb fingers, clattering loudly against the stone. Disciples gasped in horror as their seemingly invincible leader fell to his knees. Ashcroft’s face turned a deep, angry purple as he fought the invisible force pinning him down. "Kneel deeper," Kaelen commanded, standing directly over him like an ancient god of ruin. Ashcroft’s face pressed against the cold, wet stone. He whimpered, a sound so pathetic it shattered the illusion of his legendary strength. Kaelen sneered, placing a heavy, mud-caked boot onto the back of Ashcroft’s neck. "You thought you were a king among wolves. In reality, you are nothing but a dog waiting for scraps." "Please," Ashcroft choked out, his nose scraping against the rough floor. Blood bubbled from his nostrils, mixing with the dirt. "Mercy, Mighty One." "Mercy is earned through absolute submission," Kaelen murmured, leaning down. His eyes gleamed with a sadistic light. "You want your life? Prostrate yourself. Lick the dirt off my boots. Show these worthless children what happens to those who dare stand tall in my presence." A heavy silence fell over the hall like a thick wool blanket. No one dared to move, let alone draw a weapon. Shen Jin watched, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. He had seen Ashcroft execute men for merely looking him in the eye. Now, the great tyrant was reduced to a sniveling beast. Ashcroft hesitated, his fingers clawing at the stone tiles, leaving red smears behind. His pride fought against his survival instinct. "Do it," Kaelen hissed, pressing his heel down. A sickening crack echoed as Ashcroft’s collarbone fractured under the immense pressure. Tears of agony and humiliation spilled from Ashcroft’s eyes. Slowly, agonizingly, he dragged his face forward. He parted his lips and pressed them against the dark leather of Kaelen’s boot, tasting the mud and the blood of those who had fallen before him. "Good dog," Kaelen mocked, throwing his head back in a harsh, ringing laugh. "Look at your savior, disciples. Look at the man who promised you glory." Whispers of disgust and terror rippled through the ranks of the Iron Crow Sect. Several young disciples turned their heads away, unable to bear the sight of their master’s ultimate degradation. Shen Jin didn't look away. His eyes were wide, taking in every detail of the power dynamic. This was the true nature of the cultivation world. Might made right, and the weak were forced to crawl in the dirt. Kaelen kicked Ashcroft aside like a piece of discarded garbage. Ashcroft slumped onto his side, panting heavily, his face covered in filth and blood, completely broken. "Now," Kaelen said, his gaze sweeping across the crowded hall. "Who among you is the one they call Shen Jin?" Shen Jin froze. His name echoed through the cavernous hall, heavy with doom. Every eye in the room turned toward him. The crowd parted like water, leaving Shen Jin standing completely exposed in the middle of the lower gallery. Step by step, Shen Jin walked forward. His legs felt like lead, but he forced himself to maintain a calm exterior. He couldn't let them see him shake. "I am Shen Jin," he said, keeping his voice flat and steady. Kaelen’s eyes locked onto him, sharp as daggers. He assessed the young disciple with a slow, calculating gaze. "You don't look like much. A mere outer disciple with barely enough qi to light a candle." "Looks can be deceiving, Sovereign," Shen Jin replied, refusing to look down. A collective gasp rose from the remaining disciples. Standing up to the Mighty Kaelen was suicide. Instead of crushing him, Kaelen smiled. It was a cold, humorless expression. "Bold. Or stupid. We will find out which one soon enough. My sources tell me you possess the Key of the Nine Heavens." Inner panic flared within Shen Jin, but his face remained a mask of stone. The Key was his family's greatest secret, a relic capable of unlocking the ancient treasury of the Primordial Emperor. How Kaelen had discovered this was a mystery. "I don't know what you are talking about," Shen Jin said. Kaelen’s smile vanished. Instantly, the oppressive spiritual pressure shifted from Ashcroft to Shen Jin. It hit him like a physical blow, forcing the air from his lungs. His knees groaned under the weight. "Do not play games with me, boy," Kaelen growled, stepping closer. "I watched your master grovel at my feet. Do you wish to join him?" Shen Jin gritted his teeth, the pressure threatening to tear his meridians apart. His vision blurred, but a spark of defiance burned deep in his chest. He would not crawl. "If you kill me, you will never find it," Shen Jin managed to choke out, blood dripping from his lip. --- Damp stone walls sweated in the dark depths of the Iron Crow dungeons. Shen Jin sat on the cold floor, nursing his bruised ribs. Kaelen’s spiritual pressure had left his energy channels in absolute chaos. Every breath felt like inhaling broken glass. Footsteps echoed down the corridor, slow and dragging. Someone was limping. Ashcroft Gravxe appeared in front of the iron bars. He looked pathetic. His face was swollen, his fancy silk robes torn and stained with dried mud. A once-proud sect leader was now reduced to a hollow shell. "You're still alive," Ashcroft muttered, his voice raspy and broken. "Barely," Shen Jin replied, not looking up. "I see you survived your... performance." Anger flared in Ashcroft’s eyes, but it quickly died out, replaced by a bitter, hollow despair. "He broke me. He made me eat dirt in front of my own men. I have nothing left." "Then why are you here?" Shen Jin asked, raising his eyes to meet the fallen leader’s gaze. Ashcroft leaned against the bars, his hands trembling. "Because Kaelen wants the Key, and he will tear this entire sect apart to get it. He is going to execute me tomorrow morning as an example." "And you want me to help you?" Shen Jin let out a dry, hacking laugh. "I am locked in a cage, Ashcroft. My cultivation is suppressed." "I can unlock the cell," Ashcroft whispered, pulling a heavy brass key from his sleeve. "But you must promise me one thing." "What?" "Kill him," Ashcroft hissed, his eyes burning with a sudden, venomous hatred. "Use the Key. Access the Primordial Emperor’s treasury. Acquire the power to tear Kaelen’s soul from his body and make him scream for eternity." Shen Jin stared at the key in Ashcroft’s hand. This was a deal with the devil. Ashcroft was a tyrant who had enslaved entire villages, but Kaelen was an existential threat to the entire world. "How do I know this isn't a trap?" Shen Jin asked, stepping closer to the bars. "Look at me!" Ashcroft snarled quietly, gesturing to his bruised face. "I have no honor left. I have no sect. All I have is my hatred. If I die, I want to know Kaelen’s demise is assured." Without waiting for an answer, Ashcroft shoved the key into the lock and turned it. The heavy iron door creaked open. Shen Jin took the key, his mind racing. He stepped out of the cell, feeling the cool air of the corridor. He looked at Ashcroft, who was slumped against the wall, looking older than his years. "Thank you," Shen Jin said quietly. "Do not thank me," Ashcroft spat. "Just make him suffer." --- Darkness swallowed Shen Jin as he descended deeper into the ancient catacombs beneath the Black Spires. Water dripped from the ceiling, splashing into stagnant pools that lined the stone pathway. Mold and damp earth filled his nostrils, making him cough. Using his hand to guide him along the rough stone wall, Shen Jin moved as quickly as his injured body allowed. His chest burned with every step. Kaelen’s residual energy still writhed inside his meridians, a toxic poison eating away at his strength. Suddenly, a strange sound echoed from the darkness ahead. It sounded like the scraping of metal against stone. Shen Jin froze, pressing his back against the wet wall. He held his breath, listening intently. Footsteps approached, but they were too light to be Kaelen’s guards. They sounded frantic, hurried. A faint light flickered around the corner, casting long, distorted shadows on the ancient walls. Shen Jin reached into his tunic, gripping a small, hidden dagger he had managed to keep concealed. Around the corner came a figure wrapped in a dark cloak, carrying a small spirit lantern. The light illuminated a pale, beautiful face with sharp features and striking silver eyes. Shen Jin recognized her instantly. It was Meilin, the daughter of the high elder, and a prodigy of the sect. "Shen Jin?" she whispered, her eyes widening as the lantern light caught his face. "What are you doing here, Meilin?" Shen Jin demanded, keeping his dagger raised. "I’m escaping," she said quickly, stepping closer. "Kaelen’s men are slaughtering anyone who resists. They are searching the entire mountain for you. We need to leave, now." "How did you find this path?" Shen Jin asked, his eyes narrowing in suspicion. "My father told me about the catacombs before they took him," she explained, a tear slipping down her cheek. "He’s dead, Shen Jin. They executed him in the courtyard." Grief and anger warred within Shen Jin, but he forced them down. There was no time for mourning. "We need to keep moving. Ashcroft let me out, but he won't be able to keep them distracted for long." "Ashcroft?" Meilin looked stunned. "The Grandmaster helped you?" "He wants Kaelen dead," Shen Jin said simply. "Come on." Together, they hurried through the twisting tunnels. The map Ashcroft had provided was crude, but it was accurate enough to guide them past the structural collapses and ancient traps. After what felt like hours, the damp air of the catacombs began to shift. A cool breeze brushed against their faces, carrying the crisp scent of pine needles. "We’re close to the exit," Meilin whispered, a glimmer of hope in her eyes. Before they could reach the end of the tunnel, a massive tremor shook the ground. Dust and small pebbles rained down from the ceiling, forcing them to shield their eyes. A booming voice echoed through the catacombs, vibrating with immense spiritual power. "Did you really think you could run from me, Shen Jin?" Shen Jin’s blood ran cold. It was Kaelen. Looking back, they saw a blinding light approaching from the depths of the tunnel. The spiritual pressure returned, heavier than before, threatening to collapse the very tunnel walls. "He found us," Meilin gasped, panic taking over her face. "How is that possible?" Shen Jin looked down at the leather pouch Ashcroft had given him. A faint, glowing rune was etched into the bottom of the leather. It was a tracking array. Betrayal stung deeper than any physical wound. Ashcroft hadn't helped him out of revenge—he had used him as bait to buy his own life back from Kaelen. "Run!" Shen Jin shouted, grabbing Meilin’s hand and sprinting toward the exit. They burst out of the catacombs onto a narrow cliff ledge, overlooking a sheer drop of thousands of feet. The rain still poured, slicking the rocks. Behind them, the tunnel entrance exploded in a shower of stone and dust. Sovereign Kaelen stepped out of the rubble, completely dry despite the pouring rain. His eyes glowed with a terrifying, golden light. "Hand over the Key," Kaelen commanded, raising his hand. "Or I will throw you both from this cliff." Shen Jin stood at the edge, his heels hovering over the abyss. He looked at Meilin, then back at Kaelen. Suddenly, the ground beneath them began to crumble.
