Chapter 2 of 2

Episode 2: SUB DANGER....

"Relax, lawyers, TV executives, and horrified parents," Phern’s voice boomed through the camp’s PA system, dripping with mock concern. "Nobody died. Yet." Screams of terror from the night before still seemed to echo off the rocky cliffs of Tension Island. Smoke from the explosion that had seemingly consumed Guy had finally cleared, leaving only a faint smell of burnt sulfur and cheap theatrical fog. "Legally speaking, my contract prevents me from actually terminating any contestant's life," Phern continued, his chuckles crackling through the static. "That horrific blast was just high-grade CGI and a very loud smoke bomb. Guy is perfectly safe, though probably highly traumatized, on his way to Motel Island." "Motel Island?" Zen’s chill voice echoed in the background of the broadcast, sounding like she was chewing on a fingernail. "You mean that run-down, moldy shack three miles north with the broken vending machine and the bedbug infestation?" "Precisely!" Phern barked, sounding entirely too pleased with himself. "The Drone of Elimination carried him there. He’ll spend the rest of the season eating stale crackers while watching us have fun on the monitors. Now, get some sleep, losers. Tomorrow brings a whole new level of pain." --- Morning light hit the beach like a physical blow, waking the contestants with a harsh glare that made everyone regret signing up for the show. Donnie sat on a rotting log, slowly rubbing his temples. Forty years of life had not prepared him for the sheer lack of coffee on this godforsaken island. Still, his mind was sharp, instantly calculating his next moves as he watched the younger players stumble out of their cabins. "We need a plan," Donnie muttered, his voice low as he leaned toward Kira, who was shivering despite the morning heat. "Guy is gone because he was weak and lazy. If we lose again today, someone else has to go. It shouldn't be you, Kira. I can protect you, but you have to do exactly what I say." Kira bit her lip, nodding quickly, her eyes wide with desperation. Fear made her easy to mold, a perfect pawn for Donnie’s long-game strategy. "Okay. Just tell me who to vote for. I don't want to go to that creepy motel." Across the clearing, Tarah sat by herself, sharpening a stick with a jagged rock. "If any of you idiots breathe near me today, I’ll poke your eyes out," she warned, not looking up from her weapon. Ralph walked out of the forest, carrying a massive log on his shoulders as if it were a pool noodle. Sweat glistened on his broad back, showcasing his farm-bred strength and making several of the girls turn their heads. Ella’s eyes went wide. She scrambled over to him on all fours, sniffing the air around his muddy boots before springing up to her feet. "You smell like fertilizer and raw, unadulterated power," she squealed, her expression wild and chaotic. "I love it! Do you want to eat dirt with me later? I found a patch of clay that looks delicious!" Ralph blinked, a slow, dim-witted blush spreading across his sunburned cheeks. "Uh. Dirt has too many worms. But I like your energy, city girl. You're like a wild raccoon. I respect raccoons. Back on the farm, they’re the only things that can outsmart my traps." "Yes! Call me your trash panda!" Ella laughed hysterically, grabbing Ralph's massive bicep and swinging from it like a hyperactive monkey. Ralph didn't even flinch, simply grinning down at her with a goofy, lovestruck smile. --- Over at the Bouncy Goopers' camp, the mood was far more relaxed, almost festive. Tristan was already doing push-ups in the wet sand, counting aloud to one hundred in a voice that was already raspy from exertion. Calle sat nearby on a beach towel, filing his nails and shaking his head at his best friend’s ridiculous intensity. "Save your energy, Try-Hard," Calle teased, kicking a bit of sand toward Tristan's face. "We already won the first round. We have the momentum, the looks, and clearly the superior brainpower." "Momentum is a scientific variable, Calle, and variables change!" Tristan gasped out, pushing himself up for another rapid-fire rep. "We must remain peak physical specimens! If we slack off, we end up like the Sideward Hunters!" Cory paced behind them, trying to look like a criminal mastermind but mostly just looking like he had a cramp. "Listen, guys," Cory chimed in, lowering his voice to a conspiratorial whisper. "We need to form a sub-alliance. Tristan, Calle, me. We control the middle votes. If Emma tries to bully us, we take her out first." Calle rolled his eyes, not even looking up from his nails. "Sure, Cory. Whatever helps you sleep at night. Just don't get your greasy hands near my hair products." --- Phern’s airhorn shattered the morning peace, signaling the start of the next event. Gathered at the edge of a steep, rocky cliff overlooking the churning ocean, the thirteen remaining players looked down at the dark, swirling water below. "Welcome to Game Two: Get A Sea Key!" Phern announced, wearing a ridiculous captain’s hat that sat crookedly on his head and holding a shiny megaphone. "Hidden deep below these waves are three golden keys. Your goal is simple: dive down, retrieve all three keys, and bring them back to me. First team to deliver all three keys wins safety. The losers? Another trip to the elimination campfire." Zen stood nearby, holding a clipboard and chewing on a piece of dried kelp. "Try not to drown," she added casually, her eyes locked on her phone. "The sharks around here are vegetarian, but the giant stinging jellyfish definitely aren't. They love the taste of teenagers." "Go!" Phern screamed through his megaphone, not even giving them a warning countdown. Splashes erupted as players leapt from the rocks, some screaming in terror while others dove with perfect form. Tristan was the first in, cutting through the water like a spear and leaving a trail of bubbles behind him. Bouncy Goopers cheered from the cliffside as he disappeared beneath the surface. Ralph grabbed Ella by the waist, grunting as he prepared to jump. "Hold on, little raccoon!" he yelled over the wind. "Make me fly, farm boy!" Ella shrieked with glee, wrapping her legs around his waist as they plunged into the ocean together, creating a massive splash that drenched Phern. "Hey! Watch the designer jacket!" Phern yelled, wiping salt water from his face. --- Down in the deep blue, the search was chaotic and terrifying. Star swam slowly, her eyes wide as she stared at the coral formations. "The alignment of Neptune suggests the keys are to the left," she muttered to herself, bubbles escaping her mouth. She drifted away from her team, completely ignoring the shiny metal object glinting near a patch of sea anemones. Aiah swam past her, looking entirely too comfortable underwater, her long dark hair floating around her head like a halo of seaweed. She didn't even seem to breathe, her dark eyes scanning the seabed like a predator searching for prey. With a swift, creepy movement, she snatched a golden key from a rocky crevice and swam back toward the surface. "One key for the Goopers!" Zen announced as Aiah emerged, tossing the key onto the sand without a word before diving back in. Meanwhile, Ralph was tearing through the kelp forest like a human lawnmower, using his massive arms to pull himself through the heavy current. He spotted a key wedged beneath a heavy boulder. Grunting underwater, Ralph strained against the massive rock, his muscles bulging as he tried to lift it. Ella swam up behind him, tickling his ribs and blowing bubbles in his face in an attempt to be playful. Instead of being distracted, Ralph let out a muffled laugh, found an extra surge of strength, and flipped the boulder completely over. He grabbed the second key. "Hurry!" Donnie shouted from the shore, having refused to even wet his ankles. "Bring it here, Ralph!" Ralph tossed the key to Ella, who swam to the surface and threw it directly at Phern’s head. Phern dodged just in time, yelping in surprise. "That’s one for the Sideward Hunters!" Tristan found the second key for the Goopers shortly after, screaming underwater in triumph as he kicked back to the surface. "Two for the Goopers!" Zen yelled. "It's a tie!" Everything depended on the final key, and the tension on the beach was palpable. Star was still drifting in a daze, staring at a jellyfish with a look of pure wonder. "The cosmic flow is so peaceful down here," she whispered, completely forgetting about the game and the team relying on her. Kira tried to swim down to search, but a school of aggressive-looking crabs blocked her path, snapping their claws menacingly. She panicked, splashing wildly and retreating to the surface. "I can't do it! They have pinchers and they hate my face!" Donnie glared at her from the shore, his fists clenched. "Get back down there, you useless girl!" he hissed, but Kira was too terrified to move, sobbing in the shallow water. Emma shrieked as a wave splashed her designer sunglasses. "My hair! Phern, this is a hazard to my brand!" May Anne applied another layer of waterproof setting spray, nodding in agreement. "We need to win just so we can get back to the mirrors. This salt water is doing terrible things to our skin." Cory, wanting to prove his worth to his team, dove deep into the murky depths. He spotted the final key wedged near a sharp, jagged reef. Ignoring the pain as the coral scraped his shoulder, he grabbed the metal ring and kicked frantically for the surface. "I got it! I got it!" Cory screamed as his head broke the water, holding the key high. He scrambled onto the beach, falling at Phern’s feet and sliding the third key across the wet sand. "And the Bouncy Goopers win immunity again!" Phern declared, blowing his airhorn right next to Cory's ear. --- Defeat hung heavily over the Sideward Hunters as they trudged back to their camp. Losing felt twice as bitter this time, and the looming elimination ceremony cast a dark shadow over the remaining members. Everyone knew the drill, and Donnie was already pulling the strings behind the scenes. "Star did absolutely nothing," Donnie whispered to Ralph and Tarah behind the cabins, his eyes darting around to make sure they weren't being overheard. "She was talking to jellyfish while we were drowning. She is a liability, and she has to go." Tarah spat on the ground, her expression hard. "I don't care who goes, as long as I don't have to look at their stupid faces anymore. Star is annoying. I'm voting for her." "She's not very helpful on the farm," Ralph admitted, holding Ella's hand. Ella was busy trying to bite a zipper off his jacket, completely oblivious to the strategy. "Yeah, let's vote Star." --- Night fell over Tension Island, bringing a chilly breeze that rustled the palm trees and made the campfire flicker wildly. Phern stood before the glowing campfire, holding a tray of cheap, generic-brand marshmallows. "Welcome back, Sideward Hunters. Once again, you failed. Once again, one of you will be leaving on the Drone of Elimination." Zen leaned against a wooden post, looking bored out of her mind. "Just get to the votes. My favorite reality show is on in ten minutes and I don't want to miss the intro." "Right," Phern said. "When I call your name, you get a marshmallow. If you don't get a marshmallow, your game is over." Donnie caught his easily. Ralph nabbed his with a grin. Ella snapped hers out of the air with her teeth. Tarah snatched hers with a sneer, while Kira barely caught hers, her hands shaking with anxiety. Only Star and another player remained without a marshmallow. Star sat cross-legged on her stump, staring up at the night sky with a serene, detached expression. "The stars do not lie," she whispered. "My journey here is determined by the cosmos, not by mere mortals." "Actually, it was determined by the votes," Phern mocked, holding up the final marshmallow. "And the final marshmallow goes to... Kira!" Kira gasped, clutching her chest in relief and nearly dropping her marshmallow into the dirt. Star didn't move, her calm demeanor unfazed by the elimination. She simply looked at Donnie, her eyes narrowing as the campfire light flickered across her face, casting long, eerie shadows. A mechanical whirring sound filled the air as the massive claw of the Drone of Elimination descended from the dark sky, its metal pinches gleaming in the firelight. "Wait," Star said, her voice dropping to a creepy, resonant tone that made everyone freeze. "Before I am carried away into the dark, I have a prophecy for this island." Donnie smirked, leaning back and crossing his arms. "Save it for the motel, space cadet." Star pointed a trembling finger directly at Donnie, her eyes wide and unblinking. "The stars reveal the truth of your soul, old man. You think you are the puppet master, but the ultimate betrayal will come from the one you trust the most, and it will destroy you before the final week." Before anyone could speak, the metal claw clamped around Star's waist and yanked her violently into the night sky, her haunting laughter echoing over the camp as Donnie's smirk slowly faded into a cold, tense silence.
