Chapter 2: A Ten-Thousand-Fold Fist

Rainwater mixed with iron-tasting blood in Ethan's mouth. Cold asphalt bit into his cheek as he lay paralyzed in the muddy gutter. Above him, Marcus Sterling stood like a god of the slums, his polished designer boots gleaming despite the filth of Sector 9. No one in this godforsaken district ever fought back against the Golden Triad's enforcers. To do so was a death sentence, a guaranteed ticket to a shallow grave beneath the corporate waste dumps. Marcus sneered, raising his heavy boot to deliver the final, skull-crushing blow. Neon light from a distant skyscraper reflected off the wet brick walls, casting long, distorted shadows across the alley. Suddenly, a sharp chime echoed directly inside Ethan's skull, drowning out the roar of the rain. `[TEN-THOUSAND-FOLD SYSTEM INITIALIZED]` `[Host: Ethan Vance]` `[Status: Near-critical physical damage]` `[Emergency Protocol: Active]` Floating blue text hovered in his line of sight, sharp and clear against the grimy backdrop of the city. Ethan blinked, wondering if the blood loss was finally causing him to hallucinate his own death. Every muscle in his body screamed in agony, yet the glowing letters remained solid, unmoving, and impossibly real. Marcus's face twisted into a cruel grin. "Die, trash," the enforcer spat, his leg snapping forward with the practiced, lethal speed of a high-tier martial artist. Wind roared as the boot cut through the rain, aiming directly for Ethan's temple with enough force to shatter concrete. Instinct, raw and primal, took over. Ethan threw his arms up in a desperate, cross-shaped block, bracing for the bone-shattering impact. He closed his eyes, preparing for the inevitable darkness of death. `[Incoming impact detected.]` `[Analyzing kinetic energy... 450 pounds of force.]` `[Applying Ten-Thousand-Fold Absorption Multiplier...]` `[Result: 4,500,000 pounds of kinetic energy successfully stored and neutralized.]` A strange, deep vibration hummed through Ethan's bones. When Marcus's boot slammed into Ethan's forearms, there was no sound of fracturing bone or tearing muscle. Instead, Ethan felt as if a gentle autumn breeze had brushed against his skin. Every ounce of the devastating kinetic energy from Marcus's kick was absorbed, channeled, and amplified deep within Ethan's muscle fibers. Blue kinetic vectors lit up in Ethan's vision, showing the flow of force traveling from his arms down into his chest and legs. Marcus's eyes widened in sheer disbelief as his foot bounced harmlessly off Ethan's seemingly fragile arms. "What the hell did you just do?" Marcus demanded, stumbling back a half-step, his perfect composure slipping. Ethan didn't answer. Hot, volatile energy surged through his veins, screaming for an escape. His heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped beast, pumping supercharged blood to his limbs. Every cell in his body felt as though it were being infused with the power of a cosmic engine. Without thinking, fueled by nineteen years of accumulated rage and humiliation, Ethan scrambled to his feet. Images of his mother's slow, painful death in their freezing, unheated apartment flashed before his eyes. He remembered begging the corporate guards for a single transit pass to the high-tier hospital. They had spat on him, throwing him into the gutter just like Marcus had done today. Anger, pure and unadulterated, washed away his fear. He lunged forward, throwing a clumsy, uncoordinated left hook. It was a desperate street-fighter's punch, lacking any proper form, balance, or martial arts technique. `[Host offensive action detected.]` `[Kinetic output: 120 pounds of force.]` `[Applying Ten-Thousand-Fold Multiplier...]` `[Total output: 1,200,000 pounds of force.]` Time seemed to screech to a violent halt. Air pressure in the alleyway dropped instantly, creating a vacuum that sucked the falling rain inward. A deafening crack, like a lightning bolt striking a metal rod, shattered the silence of Sector 9. Ethan's fist didn't even make direct contact with Marcus's face before the sheer atmospheric pressure began to warp the space between them. A shockwave of compressed air erupted from Ethan's knuckles, glowing with a faint, transcendent blue light. Marcus didn't even have time to scream. His face contorted, the skin on his cheeks rippling violently under the sudden atmospheric displacement. Then, he was gone. Launched backward at supersonic speed, Marcus became a blur of expensive designer fabric and shattered limbs. He flew fifty feet down the narrow alleyway, cutting through the heavy rain like a human missile. Ancient, rotting brick walls of the Sector 9 buildings on either side fractured under the secondary pressure wave. Red powder and stone shards cascaded into the mud as the structural integrity of the alleyway crumbled. At the end of the alley stood a heavy, reinforced steel security door belonging to a corporate warehouse. Marcus's body slammed into it with the force of an industrial wrecking ball. A massive, deafening BOOM echoed through the district, rattling the windows of nearby high-rises. Steel buckled inward, its heavy bolts tearing free from the concrete frame with a screech of shearing metal. Marcus was thrown straight through the ruined doorway, disappearing into the dark warehouse beyond. Silence, heavy and absolute, returned to the alley. Only the sound of falling rain and the hiss of escaping steam from a ruptured pipe remained. Ethan stood frozen, his left arm still outstretched in the punching position. His knuckles were perfectly intact, not a single scratch or bruise marking his pale skin. Yet, the air around his hand was warped, shimmering with heat waves that hissed as raindrops hit them. Trembling violently, Ethan lowered his hand and stared at his palm. "No way..." he whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. This was impossible. This was the kind of power reserved for the high-ranking martial lords of the Golden Triad. Those elite monsters spent decades consuming expensive genetic serums and training in high-gravity chambers to achieve this level of destruction. He had done it with a single, unrefined left hook. A cold, dark realization washed over him. With this system, the systemic walls that had kept him in the mud were nothing more than wet paper. He could crush them. He could crush all of them. A low laugh escaped his throat, growing louder and wilder until it filled the empty alley. "Ten thousand times..." he breathed, his eyes shining with a dangerous, predatory light. He walked slowly toward the ruined warehouse door, his boots splashing in the muddy puddles. Rubble and shattered bricks littered the ground, a physical testament to the godlike force he now wielded. Inside the dark warehouse, Marcus lay slumped against a pile of broken wooden pallets, unconscious and bleeding from every pore. His expensive designer coat was shredded to ribbons, the pristine white fabric stained with soot and blood. Ethan stood over him, looking down at the man who had treated his life like garbage only minutes ago. There was no pity in Ethan's eyes, only a cold, calculating hunger. Before Ethan can even process his new colossal power, his eyes lock onto a single shiny copper coin that rolled out of Marcus's torn designer coat, glowing with an ominous system prompt.
