Chapter 5 of 10

Tai Chi and Traitors

The targeting grid flared scarlet against Orynix’s chest plates. Static hissed through the barrel's coils, humming with absolute finality. The champion's rig, typically radiant with dynamic power, stalled into rigid silence. His internal processors screamed danger, but his pilot, trapped in a moment of utter helplessness, could only stare. The heavy barrel clicked once more. “His life for the coordinates. A simple exchange,” the machine droned, devoid of inflection. “A simple exchange, indeed,” Huan Jue murmured, stepping forward. He didn’t hesitate, didn’t glance back at Orynix. The move was so sudden, so utterly unhinged, that even the Enforcer paused for a micro-cycle of processing. Huan Jue walked directly into the path of the cannon, placing himself between the glowing muzzle and Orynix’s frozen frame. The scarlet dot flickered, snapping from the champion's chassis to the slender frame of Zynar. Orynix’s internal comms flared. “Zynar! No! Get back! It’s a deletion weapon, you can’t –” “Silence, child,” Huan Jue cut him off, his voice calm, almost bored. “Do you wish to endanger the future of proper tea?” His eyes, however, held a laser focus, not on the Enforcer, but inward, as if listening to a silent symphony of energy. “The… future of… what now?” Orynix stammered, the absurdity momentarily overriding his terror. “Do not mistake my apathy for weakness,” Huan Jue addressed the massive machine. His stance shifted subtly, feet spreading, knees bending, arms rising in a fluid, almost meditative circle. The movement was slow, deliberate, each motion flowing into the next with the grace of water, yet possessing the unyielding strength of stone. Qi, undetectable by ordinary code scanners, gathered about his frame. It was not the abrupt burst he used to shear titanium, but an inward spiral drawing all momentum toward his dantian. “You are insignificant,” the construct declared, its tracking optics narrowing. “The target is neutralized. Fire.” Before the mecha could complete its command sequence, Huan Jue’s hands met, palms pressed together at the center of his chest, then slowly spread outwards, tracing an invisible dome in the air. This was the Tai Chi Shield, a technique designed not for offense, but for perfect defense and redirection. The gathered qi rippled, warping the simulated air like heat rising off baked slate. The heavy weapon fired, driving a soundless concussive shockwave through the Under-Grid. A vermilion lance, wide as a courier ship's exhaust nozzle, slammed into Huan Jue. There was no explosion, no shattering of pixels, no cry of pain. Instead, the beam seemed to *sink* into the invisible shield, its destructive power meeting an unyielding, yet yielding, force. The vermilion light pooled and churned around Huan Jue’s torso, held fast within the arc of his forearms. Orynix choked on a shout, bracing for Zynar to dissolve into scattered code. Instead, the small figure stood firm, utterly unshaken, the deletion blast merely illuminating his calm, almost annoyed expression. “Crude,” Huan Jue commented, a faint frown creasing his brow. “And rather impolite.” The machine's tracking array threw cascading fault codes across its interface. The beam was bleeding off—its lethal code packet swallowed whole. Standard shields would have melted or sheared under the load, yet the blast failed to penetrate the invisible barrier. Slowly, inexorably, Huan Jue began to turn, his entire body moving as one, pivoting on the balls of his feet. The collected force, condensed and mastered by his cultivation, pivoted in his grasp. It was no longer an incoming threat, but refined mass ready to strike. With a sharp, sudden exhale, Huan Jue flung his arms forward, a precise, measured thrust. The concentrated crimson orb whipped back toward the heavy platform, twice as fast and channeled by sharp intent. It bored cleanly through the machine's central power core. The heavy mech didn't just explode; it imploded, then erupted outwards in a dazzling, silent shockwave of pure light. Shattered polygons scattered across the dark floor like broken glass. The virtual bedrock shuddered underfoot. Where the chassis had stood, only a fading haze of static drifted across the tiles. Orynix stared, utterly speechless. His jaw, in his mecha avatar, hung open. His cockpit telemetry flatlined on residual thermal data, while his pulse raced back in his real flesh. Zynar had caught a lethal discharge bare-handed and used it to vaporize an armed hunter without taking a single backward step. “Truly pathetic,” Huan Jue sighed, dusting off his sleeves. “Such a waste of perfectly good momentum. Now, about that tea farm…” He turned to Orynix, expecting some form of gratitude, perhaps a quiet acknowledgment of his genius. Instead, the colossal mecha lunged. Before Huan Jue could react, Orynix’s massive, titanium-alloy arms wrapped around him, lifting him clean off his feet in a bone-crushing embrace. The champion’s tall rig, typically so steady, rattled with unrestrained joy. “You are… you are magnificent! You slapped away a deletion beam! My Zynar!” Orynix bellowed through his speakers, voice thick with wonder. He squeezed tighter, oblivious to Huan Jue’s growing discomfort. “You saved me! You saved me and the tea! You’re everything I ever dreamed of and more! My hero!” Huan Jue spluttered, genuinely taken aback by the overwhelming affection. The force of the hug threatened to expel the last traces of qi from his lungs. He felt a distinct warmth creep up his neck, a blush of sheer annoyance at the public display. “Release me, you overgrown scrap heap! This is entirely unnecessary! And I am *not* ‘your’ anything!” Several sectors away in a dim relay closet, Tavros stared at the telemetry stream, his mouth slightly open. The feed from the Under-Grid showed empty static where their premier operative had stood. His console blinked amber with a cold prompt: `FAILURE. UNACCEPTABLE. CONTAINMENT BREACH. ABORT AND RESET SECTOR.` His easy grin vanished. His knuckles blanched as he tapped rapid commands into the hard keys, the breezy technician persona discarded. The target was meant to dissolve cleanly without drawing attention. Instead, a top-tier enforcer had been erased, leaving the fugitive untouched. “Abort and reset… right,” Tavros muttered, wiping perspiration from his brow. He slapped an unmapped rune on the projection plate, bypassing three tiers of network safety. With one stroke, he queued a purge cycle for the entire district. Back in the Under-Grid, Huan Jue was still struggling to escape Orynix’s enthusiastic embrace when a low rumble shook the virtual landscape. The ground beneath their feet began to fracture, lines of brilliant blue light spiderwebbing across the dark surface. The distant skybox warped, pulling simulated starlight into stretched white needles. The very fabric of the sector was unraveling. “What now?” Huan Jue grumbled, finally prying one arm free to point at the rapidly dissolving ground. “Are you so excited you’re breaking the universe?” Orynix set him down, the mech's faceplate lights flaring wide. “No! This isn’t me! This is a sector collapse! Someone triggered a total systems reset!” The fractures deepened, roaring open into gaping abysses. Entire chunks of the digital landscape detached and plummeted into an inky, swirling void below. The sound was deafening, a cacophony of tearing data and imploding code. The ground beneath Huan Jue and Orynix gave way entirely, dropping them into the terrifying, endless digital chasm. As they fell, tumbling amidst the spiraling fragments of their former environment, Huan Jue twisted his head, his eyes scanning the collapsing periphery. Through a narrowing fissure in the code, Huan Jue caught sight of an exit node floating intact. A figure stood calmly on the sill, outlined in pale cobalt radiance: Tavros, expressionless and cold. The technician stepped backward into the gate, which sealed instantly behind him, leaving Huan Jue and Orynix tumbling downward into black emptiness.
