Chapter 1 of 10

The Grandmaster's Glitch

1.1k words

The acrid tang of ozone bit at Huan Jue’s throat, a stark contrast to the fragrant jasmine he’d been steeping just moments before his inconvenient demise. His eyes, now belonging to someone named Zynar, snapped open to the jarring reality of a cramped, vibrating utility tunnel. Every muscle screamed, a dull, insistent ache radiating from a body that felt distinctly… used. This Zynar had been running, hard. “There! Across the ventilation shaft!” A voice, tinny and distorted, echoed from behind. Huan Jue didn’t need to see the ionized discharge lances to know the syndicate was on his heels. He merely rolled his eyes. Such persistent, unsubtle nuisances. His former self, Grandmaster of the Still-Water Qi, could have simply evaporated into thin air. This Zynar, however, possessed only mortal legs and lungs burning like slag furnaces. He scrambled, clumsy and uncoordinated, through a maintenance hatch and burst into a vast, echoing hall. Flickering light arrays shimmered around him: ancient warriors in flowing robes mimed intricate forms, their movements graceful but utterly silent. A history museum. Specifically, the ‘Epochs of Embodied Combat’ exhibit. “He’s in Sector Gamma-9! Lock down the egress points!” The syndicate’s pursuit was relentless. A searing bolt of cerulean energy ripped through the air, melting a display of shimmering bladed staffs into bubbling slag mere inches from his head. Huan Jue ducked instinctively, a reflex honed over centuries of dodging actual blades, not glorified light shows. His gaze fell upon a replica training staff, its lacquered grain smooth and unassuming, displayed behind an invisible forcefield. With a grunt of exasperation, he channeled a minuscule thread of qi – just enough to destabilize the field’s harmonic frequency – and snatched the staff. It felt alien, solid, yet strangely comforting in his grip. A true weapon, even if it was merely glorified timber. Another charged bolt shrieked past, singeing the faux-silk tunic Zynar wore. Huan Jue pivoted, the old instincts stirring, but his borrowed body was sluggish. He tripped, not over his own feet, but over a raised circular panel embedded in the floor, dark as polished obsidian. A blinding flash of azure light erupted from beneath him, accompanied by a deafening, synthesized chime. [VIP Access Confirmed: User Zynar. Welcome to the Veloxis Nexus. Initializing Aegis Pavilion entry…] “What in the nine hells…?” Huan Jue muttered, the world around him dissolving into a kaleidoscope of swirling light. His last glimpse of the museum was the approaching, enraged faces of the syndicate thugs, their thermal carbines humming with malevolent intent. Then, abruptly, solid ground. The air crackled with anticipation, a roar of unseen crowds washing over him. He stood in the center of a colossal, gleaming arena, its crystalline floor reflecting a hundred thousand spectral spectators. Towering above him, a colossal mecha, crimson and obsidian, bristled with an absurd array of particle cannons and kinetic disruptors. It was easily a hundred feet tall, a symphony of polished titanium and controlled rage. [Welcome, Zynar. Prepare for battle.] The omnipresent Nexus voice boomed. “Champion Orynix engaging! Standby for immediate combat!” another voice, live and laced with adrenaline, declared. The giant mecha’s optical sensors, twin emerald slits, fixated on Huan Jue. It took a single, thunderous step, the ground trembling. The mecha champion, whoever this ‘Orynix’ was, clearly wasn't one for pleasantries. Huan Jue sighed, a long, drawn-out exhalation. His retirement. His tea. Both interrupted. He looked at the ash staff in his hand. “Primitive,” he recalled an archival recording drone chirping, “a relic of an age of brutal, inefficient violence.” The mecha moved with astonishing speed for its size, a blur of red and black. Its primary plasma cannon began to charge, a pulsating blue glow gathering at its barrel. Huan Jue merely shifted his weight, a subtle, almost imperceptible adjustment of his center of gravity. He closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, letting the Still-Water Neigong flow, a cool, revitalizing current against the exhaustion of Zynar’s abused body. The ash rod felt less like a museum prop and more like an extension of his own qi. “Pathetic display,” Huan Jue murmured, not to the mech, but to the universe itself, annoyed. The mecha was nearly upon him, the cannon almost fully charged. He didn't bother dodging. Instead, with a flick of his wrist, the sanded staff became a blur. It struck the mecha’s left knee joint, not with brute force, but with a precise, almost surgical impact. The still-water qi, focused to an infinitesimally small point, bypassed the outer armor entirely, disrupting the delicate kinetic dampeners within. A screech of tortured metal, a cascade of sparks. The mecha stumbled, its left leg buckling inwards. The plasma cannon, now fully charged, fired wildly, a blinding blue beam searing a trench across the arena floor, nowhere near Huan Jue. Before the pilot could regain control, Huan Jue was already moving. He flowed around the colossal machine, a shadow, the staff a living extension. A rap to the right elbow actuator, then a swift, upward thrust to the main gyro-stabilizer housing beneath the left shoulder pauldron. Each strike was feather-light, yet devastatingly effective. The mecha, the pride of the Aegis Pavilion, the galaxy’s reigning champion, began to convulse. Its limbs seized, sparking erratically. The pilot desperately tried to compensate, but every system was failing. With a final, shuddering groan, the massive crimson and obsidian machine froze, its emerald eyes dimming. Then, with a series of loud *pops* and *whirs*, its armored shell split open along pre-designated emergency seams, showering the arena with crystalline shards. Silence. Utter, complete silence across the Veloxis Nexus. Millions of spectators, their projected avatars frozen in disbelief, watched as the top of the mecha slowly peeled back. From the exposed cockpit, a figure emerged, tumbling ungracefully onto the arena floor. It was a young man, perhaps in his early twenties, with a shock of vibrant teal hair, staring in stunned disbelief. His face was flushed crimson, a furious, adorable blush that spread from his neck to the tips of his pointed ears. He stared at Huan Jue, who still held the pole with a look of mild disinterest. The young man swallowed hard, his voice barely a squeak. “Y-you… you dismantled my *Veloce Imperator* with a… a stick! I’ve never been… I mean, no one has ever… What is your mating registry number?!”
