Chapter 1: A Blueprint for Chaos

1.4k words

Precision was the only thing keeping the world from spinning out of orbit. Ink-stained fingers adjusted the metal compass with microscopic care, ensuring the arc matched the blueprint perfectly. Midnight had long since passed, leaving the university design studio bathed in a cold, fluorescent hum. Every tool on the oak table lay perfectly aligned, parallel to the edge of the cutting mat. Taehyung exhaled a quiet breath, his chest rising and falling in a slow, practiced rhythm. Control was his sanctuary, his armor against a world that was always too loud and too unpredictable. Shadows stretched long and thin across the concrete floor, dancing in the dim light of the flickering hallway bulb. Taehyung kept his focus locked on his work, refusing to let his eyes wander. He knew that if he allowed his mind to drift, the memories of his childhood would flood in. His father’s booming voice, his mother’s tears, the sound of glass shattering against the wall—those were the things that haunted the quiet spaces of his mind. To survive, he had learned to love the silence. He had learned to love the perfect, unyielding lines of drafting paper. No one could argue with a straight line. No one could break a mathematical equation. Balsa wood struts formed the skeletal frame of his final thesis model, a towering modernist pavilion. One wrong move would ruin the delicate structural balance. Carefully, he lowered a microscopic drop of adhesive onto the central joint. Silence filled the empty room, protecting him from his own racing thoughts. His phone buzzed on silent mode, ignored under a pile of scrap cardboard. Nothing existed except the crisp scent of paper, the sharp tang of glue, and the clean lines of his design. Suddenly, heavy boots dragged against the linoleum outside, shattering the quiet. Rain pelted against the high glass windows, a frantic, messy rhythm that made Taehyung's jaw tighten. Before he could even turn, the heavy double doors swung open with an obnoxious bang. Cold air rushed into the warm studio, bringing with it the unmistakable scent of ozone and damp asphalt. "Working hard or hardly working, handsome?" Jungkook stood in the doorway, dripping wet and grinning like a stray cat. Damp black hair clung to his forehead, framing eyes that gleamed with pure mischief. His oversized leather jacket was slick with rain, silver zippers jingling with every step he took. Taehyung didn't look up, keeping his eyes locked on his drafting board. "Leave, Jungkook," Taehyung said, his voice flat and devoid of any emotion. "Aw, that's no way to greet your favorite classmate," Jungkook cooed, stepping closer. He dragged a wet finger along the edge of Taehyung's clean cutting mat, leaving a dark smudge. Irritation flared in Taehyung's chest, hot and sharp, but he forced his expression to remain a blank mask. Reacting to Jungkook was exactly what the younger boy wanted. Over the past semester, Jungkook had made it his life's mission to disrupt Taehyung's peace. From mysteriously "borrowing" his textbooks to sitting directly in his line of sight during lectures, the younger boy was an absolute menace. Yet, no matter how hard Jungkook pushed, Taehyung refused to break. "I am busy," Taehyung muttered, his thumb tracing the smooth edge of his steel ruler. "You're always busy," Jungkook complained, leaning over the table so his face was inches from Taehyung's. Up close, the smell of rain on him was overwhelming, mixing with a sweet, spicy cologne. Jungkook's dark eyes darted down to the delicate balsa wood structure, a wicked spark igniting in his pupils. "This looks fragile," Jungkook whispered, his voice dripping with mock sympathy. "Don't touch it," Taehyung warned, his tone dropping an octave, a low rumble of danger. Deliberately, slowly, Jungkook raised a single hand, decorated with heavy silver rings. He tapped the primary support beam of the model. *Crack.* The delicate wooden column splintered under the pressure, causing the left wing of the pavilion to sag and collapse. "Oops," Jungkook giggled, tilting his head with a cheeky, unrepentant grin. A familiar, exhausting chill of irritation swept through Taehyung, freezing his veins. His carefully constructed fortress of isolation was once again under siege by the campus's most reckless troublemaker. Without thinking, Taehyung lunged forward, his large hand snapping shut around Jungkook's wrist. "That is enough," Taehyung growled, his grip tightening. Suddenly, he froze. Beneath the heavy leather cuff of Jungkook's jacket, right where Taehyung's thumb pressed, a frantic drumming pulsed. Jungkook's pulse was racing, hammering violently against Taehyung's grip like a trapped bird. It was too fast. Way too fast for someone who was supposedly just playing a casual, cocky prank. Taehyung stared down at the slender wrist in his hand, feeling the rapid vibration of a heart threatening to burst. Jungkook didn't pull away immediately, though his smirk faltered for a fraction of a second. "Like what you feel, senior?" Jungkook teased, his voice shaking slightly despite his confident words. He leaned in closer, his breath warm against Taehyung's collarbone. "You're shaking," Taehyung said softly, his stoic facade cracking just a fraction as he held his grip. "Just thrilled to have your undivided attention," Jungkook whispered, his chest rising and falling rapidly. Instead of releasing him, Taehyung tightened his fingers slightly, staring into those dark, defiant eyes. He wanted answers, not just games. "Why do you do this?" Taehyung asked, his voice low and dangerous. "Because watching you try to stay perfect is the most entertaining thing on this miserable campus," Jungkook shot back, a sudden flash of heat in his gaze. He didn't try to break the hold, almost as if he welcomed the physical contact. Rain continued to batter the glass, a background noise to the intense silence stretching between them. Taehyung's heart began to mimic the frantic rhythm under his thumb. He hated how easily this boy could disrupt his carefully built world. "You are a menace," Taehyung muttered, his eyes dropping to Jungkook's slightly parted lips before snapping back up. "And you are a robot," Jungkook countered, a challenging tilt to his chin. "But I know how to make you feel something." To prove his point, Jungkook used his free hand to reach inside his wet leather jacket. Slowly, he pulled out a rolled-up cylinder of heavy blue paper. Taehyung's eyes widened. It was his master blueprint schematics, the backbone of his entire final project. "How did you get those?" Taehyung demanded, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "You left your locker unlocked during gym yesterday," Jungkook whispered back, his face dangerously close. "Give them back," Taehyung ordered, his tall frame leaning over Jungkook, using his height to intimidate. Jungkook merely laughed, a quiet, breathless sound that vibrated between them. "Come and get them," Jungkook teased. --- Memories of their first meeting flashed through Taehyung's mind as he stared down at his stolen hard work. It had been a sweltering afternoon in the campus library, a place where absolute silence was expected. Taehyung had been studying in his usual corner when Jungkook had swaggered in, blasting music through his headphones so loudly that half the floor could hear it. When Taehyung had politely asked him to turn it down, Jungkook had simply smirked, pulled one earbud out, and offered it to him. "Want to share, grumpy?" Jungkook had asked, his voice dripping with an effortless, annoying charm. From that moment on, Taehyung had been marked. No matter where Taehyung went, Jungkook was there, a chaotic storm cloud hovering over his quiet life. Sometimes it was small things, like a stolen pen or a cheeky note left on his desk. Other times, it was massive disruptions, like today. Yet, looking closely at the boy standing before him now, Taehyung saw something he hadn't noticed before. Jungkook's cheeks were slightly flushed, and his breathing was shallow. Despite his cocky posture, there was a faint tremor in his shoulders. The rain-soaked leather jacket seemed to weigh him down, making him look smaller than his reputation suggested. "You look pale," Taehyung noted, his protective instincts warring with his frustration. "Are you sick?" "Never been better," Jungkook scoffed, though he let out a tiny, suppressed cough that he tried to turn into a laugh. "Don't change the subject, hyung. We were talking about your precious papers." "I don't have time for your games, Jungkook," Taehyung said, his voice softening slightly as he felt the erratic pulse hammer once more against his palm. "You're burning up." "Stop looking at me like that," Jungkook muttered, his gaze shifting away for the first time. "Like what?" "Like you actually care," Jungkook whispered, a raw edge of vulnerability slipping into his tone before he quickly dragged his cocky mask back into place. "Anyway, I'm a busy man. I have places to be, people to terrorize." He pulled his arm back, testing Taehyung's grip. Taehyung held fast for a second longer, mesmerized by the fragile warmth radiating from the younger boy's skin. Every instinct screamed at Taehyung to let go, to return to his safe, orderly bubble. Yet, the warmth of Jungkook's skin lingered on his fingertips, a stark contrast to the cold drafting table. He realized, with a sudden pang of dread, that he didn't want to let go. But he had to. As Taehyung lets go, Jungkook smirks and drops a brass key into Taehyung's pocket, whispering that if Taehyung wants his stolen blueprint schematics back, he will have to unlock the abandoned music wing before midnight.
