Chapter 9: The Source's Whisper
1.0k words
Rain began to drizzle, cold and sharp against Kai's overheated skin. Ozone clung to the air, thick and suffocating, a bitter reminder of the violent magic that had just transpired. Across the slick rooftop, the second Zenith Accord enforcer stood frozen, his eyes wide as plates.
Before him lay his partner, a hollowed-out husk whose very life force had been stripped away. The fallen man's skin was the color of wet ash, dry and brittle as parchment. No blood spilled, but the emptiness radiating from the corpse was far more terrifying than any wound.
"What did you..." The surviving enforcer's voice cracked, dropping his posture into a defensive crouch. He raised his heavy-caliber mana-pistol, but his hand trembled, the blue runes on his weapon flickering unsteadily. "What kind of monster are you?"
Kai didn't answer. He couldn't. Inside his chest, a tempest of stolen energy raged, tearing at his mana channels. The absorbed power from the first enforcer sloshed around his core like liquid fire, threatening to burst through his veins.
"Answer me!" the enforcer bellowed, his boots splashing in the growing puddles. He took a cautious step backward, his eyes darting from his dead comrade to the faint, violet sparks dancing across Kai's fingertips. "That power... it's impossible. No modern system can strip a soul like that. Unless..."
Silence fell over the rooftop, broken only by the steady hum of the city below and the patter of rain. The enforcer's face drained of what little color it had left.
"A fragment of the Source," the enforcer whispered, the words slipping out like a forbidden confession. "You're carrying a fragment of the Source."
Instantly, a high-pitched whine echoed inside Kai's skull. His vision glitched, the familiar blue interface of System Zero turning a violent, bleeding violet.

Kai gasped, his hands flying to his temples as a sharp, stabbing pain pierced his brain. The term 'Pre-Aetheria' burned against his retinas, flashing in angry red text. It was the same error he had seen before, but now it felt different. It felt alive.
Cold sweat broke out across his forehead, mixing with the rain. Aetheria's history began exactly 1027 years ago with the emergence of the Systems, a golden age of technology and magic. What lay before that was a blank slate, a forgotten void that the authorities strictly forbade anyone from researching.
Now, his own System was claiming a connection to that forbidden past. The realization hit him like a physical blow, leaving him breathless. He wasn't just a rogue user with a lucky cheat; he was holding a key to something ancient, massive, and incredibly dangerous.
"You cannot be allowed to exist," the enforcer muttered, his panic hardening into a desperate, lethal resolve. "The Accord will tear this entire city apart to find you. A fragment of the Source must never fall into the hands of the unregistered."
Bright, blinding light erupted from the barrel of the mana-pistol. A hyper-compressed bolt of plasma-mana tore through the rain, heading straight for Kai's chest.
Reacting on pure instinct, Kai pushed his hands forward. He didn't try to dodge. He simply unleashed the stolen energy boiling inside his core.
Violet and black lightning exploded from his palms, clashing violently with the enforcer's plasma bolt. The collision created a shockwave that shattered the glass windows of the surrounding skyscrapers.
Concrete crumbled beneath their feet. The raw force of the explosion threw the enforcer backward, his gun flying from his grip as he crashed into a metal ventilation shaft.
Kai didn't waste a single second. Knowing his body was at its absolute limit, he spun around and sprinted toward the edge of the roof.
He leaped into the abyss.

Falling through the darkness, Kai caught the edge of a rusty fire escape three stories down. The metal groaned under his weight, the impact jarring his shoulders and knocking the wind from his lungs.
He scrambled over the railing, ignoring the sharp pain in his ribs, and slipped into the shadows of the narrow alley below.
He ran. He didn't look back, didn't check to see if the enforcer was pursuing him.
Every step was agony. The stolen mana was slowly dissipating, leaving behind a crushing weight of exhaustion that threatened to pull him into unconsciousness.
He plunged deeper into the undercity, leaving the gleaming towers of Aetheria's elite behind. Down here, the air was thick with the smell of grease, rust, and cheap fuel. Neon signs flickered with dying energy, casting long, distorted shadows across the damp pavement.
He turned corner after corner, navigating the labyrinth of narrow streets, steam pipes, and forgotten tunnels. This was the underbelly of the city, a place where the Zenith Accord's light rarely shined.
Finally, his legs gave out. He stumbled into a dark, recessed alcove behind a row of abandoned storage containers, collapsing against the cold brick wall.
He clutched his chest, his breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. The rain had stopped, but the damp cold of the undercity seeped through his clothes, making him shiver violently.
He was completely alone. The familiar, hollow fear of his childhood crept back into his mind, whispering that he was nothing but a speck of dust destined to be swept away.
Yet, the power hummed beneath his skin, contradicting his fear. It was too big, too terrifying to ignore.
"What am I?" he whispered into the darkness, his voice barely audible.
No one answered. The dripping of water from a nearby pipe was the only sound in the quiet alley.
Suddenly, his vision flickered again. The violet light of System Zero returned, but this time, it didn't display the usual status screen.

As he hides in the labyrinthine undercity, his System suddenly projects a holographic map, not of Aetheria, but of a sprawling, impossibly ancient cityscape, marked with a pulsating red 'X' over a central, towering spire.
