Chapter 6 of 60
Harvesting Fear
1.3k words
Cold dread settled deep in Kai's gut. He stared at the empty space where the cloaked figure had stood, the chill of its warning echoing in his ears. "The Zenith Accord watches. They will come for what you carry." The words were a brand, searing a new layer of anxiety onto his already fractured memory.
The unsettling black flower, pressed into his palm moments before, felt like a burning coal. Its petals, dark as oblivion, seemed to pulse with a faint, malevolent energy. He couldn’t shake the image of its unnatural beauty, a promise of power or poison.
His mind raced, a frantic hamster on a wheel. Zenith Accord. The name resonated with silent menace, a whisper of authority and overwhelming might. He knew little of them, only that they were Aetheria's paramount System users, the architects of its fragile peace. Now, they were his hunters.
Dread coiled in his stomach, cold and heavy. He was a forgotten orphan, an anomaly with a System that defied explanation. What did he carry that warranted their attention? Was it System Zero itself? Or something deeper, buried beneath his amnesia?
He gripped the black flower, its texture strangely smooth, almost velvety. He needed to understand. He needed to know what he was up against. But the figure had vanished, leaving only a lingering scent of ozone and something akin to scorched earth.
Every shadow seemed to lengthen, to twist into watchful shapes. Every distant siren, every rumble of a passing mag-train, sounded like a prelude to his capture. Paranoia gnawed at him, a relentless rodent chewing through his resolve.
A chilling thought surfaced. What if the cloaked figure was a trap? What if this entire encounter was designed to push him into revealing himself? He had no allies, no one to trust. Just System Zero, a voice in his head, a power he was only just beginning to grasp.
The black flower pulsed again. He felt a faint tingle in his palm, a barely perceptible drain. Was it absorbing his energy? Or was it offering something in return? He couldn't risk keeping it. With a decisive movement, he flung it into a grimy alley dumpster, watching it disappear beneath a pile of discarded holo-screens.
Days blended into a blur of restless vigilance. Kai moved through the lower sectors, a ghost among the throngs. He ate sparingly, slept less, his senses heightened, his guard perpetually up. Every face was a potential threat, every glance a judgment.
Food tasted like ash. Sleep offered no true respite, haunted by fragmented images of enforcers and the cloaked figure’s shadowed face. He needed more power, a stronger grasp of System Zero, to stand a chance.
He needed to be ready. A flicker of resolution ignited amidst the fear. He couldn't be a victim. Not again.
---
The alley's stench was a familiar comfort. A mix of stale synth-ale and ozone, it was a place no one lingered, perfect for a discreet power-up. Kai had been tracking discarded energy cells, the lifeblood of Aetheria's tech, for two days. He'd finally found one, half-buried beneath a rusted data-pad.
A discarded energy cell, its casing cracked, lay humming faintly. It was a standard, low-grade unit, but enough. His energy levels were low, his System Zero interface displaying a critical warning. He needed to absorb its residual mana.
He knelt, his fingers tracing the faint glow emanating from the cell. He’d done this dozens of times before, the familiar surge of power a welcome rush. This time, however, a knot of apprehension tightened in his chest. The cloaked figure’s warning, the black flower, they had tainted even this simple act.
"System Zero," he murmured, extending his hand. "Activate Zero Absorption."
The interface shimmered into view: 'Zero Absorption: Active.'
Power surged from the cell, a bright, concentrated current flowing into his palm. It was raw mana, pure energy, just as it always was. A familiar warmth spread through his veins, filling the hollow ache in his core. His System's energy bar climbed steadily.
But this time, it was different. A jolt, then a colder, sharper sensation. Not just energy, but a lingering echo. Fear. Raw, animalistic dread, imprinted on the very mana he was absorbing. It wasn't his own fear. It was someone else's.
Images flashed in his mind, quick as lightning strikes. Enforcers, their faces contorted in terror, their Systems overloading, their bodies collapsing. Not the powerful, confident enforcers he’d seen in the city’s propaganda reels, but desperate, cornered prey.
Their fear. It seeped into him, a bitter, metallic taste on his tongue, a shiver down his spine. He felt their despair, their frantic scramble for survival against an unseen, overwhelming force. The mana he absorbed was not clean. It was steeped in their final moments.
It wasn't just power. Was this what the cloaked figure meant? Was he just harvesting their fear? Was this power truly *his*, or was it merely a conduit for something older, something more predatory? The whispers in his mind, those phantom memories, seemed to grow louder, more insistent.
Zero Absorption completed. He stumbled back, shaking his head, trying to dislodge the lingering impressions. His skin crawled. He felt... unclean. His System had absorbed more than just energy. It had absorbed their emotional residue, their dying screams. It felt like a violation.
Was he becoming something monstrous? His reflection in a grimy puddle showed only his own wide, haunted eyes. But he felt a change, a subtle shift within him. The System, his lifeline, now felt like a double-edged sword, demanding a price he hadn't anticipated.
The energy thrummed through him, potent and unsettling. He felt stronger, yes, but the strength was tainted. It carried the weight of another's demise. He clutched his head, trying to push away the unsettling thoughts, the intrusive echoes.
"Zero Absorption: Mana harvested. System Evolution: 0.01% progress. Warning: Emotional Residue detected. Proceed with caution." The System's voice was flat, emotionless, but the 'warning' sent a fresh wave of panic through him.
Residue. What kind of residue? What did it mean for him? What was System Zero truly doing when it 'absorbed'? Was it just taking, or was it integrating? And if it integrated, what was it integrating into *him*?
Kai's blood ran cold. The thought that his own power, the very thing keeping him alive, was consuming him, changing him, was a terrifying realization. He had no control over this. He was a passenger in his own body, driven by an ancient System he barely understood.
He stood, slowly, his muscles stiff, his mind reeling. The city lights began to flicker on as dusk settled, painting the sky in shades of bruised purple and orange. Every shadow seemed to deepen, every distant sound to amplify.
He had to understand the Zenith Accord. He had to understand System Zero. He had to understand what he was becoming, before it was too late. The cloaked figure's warning had been right. They were coming for him.
The Zenith Accord. Could they sense him? Could they track the unique signature of System Zero? A shiver ran down his spine. He needed to move, to disappear, to find answers before they found him.
His breath hitched. He needed to find a safe place, somewhere to think, to plan. He scanned the alley, the surrounding buildings, his senses straining against the encroaching darkness. Nothing moved. The street was empty.
He pressed a hand to his temple, focusing his System interface, trying to bring up a map, anything to guide him. His System interface suddenly flashes a new alert: 'Proximity Warning: High-Level System Signature Detected – Zenith Accord Enforcers.'
