Chapter 1: Shark-Infested Awakening

633 words

Water. Cold, biting, relentless. Ryan choked, lungs burning, a desperate gasp tearing through his throat. He thrashed, limbs heavy, disoriented by the chaos of waves. His head pounded, a dull ache throbbing behind his eyes. A coppery taste coated his tongue, metallic and sickening. Flailing wildly, his hand struck something solid and sharp. Splintered wood, rough against his palm. He pushed upwards, breaking the surface, saltwater stinging his eyes. Gagging, he blinked, trying to clear his vision. The horizon spun. Around him, wreckage drifted. Dark, waterlogged planks, shattered barrels, torn canvas – debris from some unseen disaster. No land. Just an endless, churning expanse of cerulean stretching in every direction. The sheer, terrifying scale of the ocean swallowed him. Panic, cold and sharp, began to prickle at his skin. This wasn't a dream. The icy grip of the sea was too real, the metallic tang of blood in the water too potent. He searched frantically, hoping for a larger piece of flotsam, anything to cling to. A shadow passed beneath him. Massive. Silent. Ryan froze, every instinct screaming. The water shifted, a subtle, powerful current pulling at his legs. He twisted, his heart hammering against his ribs, adrenaline flooding his veins. Not a shadow. A mountain of muscle and scale, impossibly vast. It rose, a leviathan of the deep, its dorsal fin cutting through the waves like a monstrous blade. His breath hitched. The creature's skin, a murky green-grey, was scarred and ancient. Then, a gaping maw. Rows of razor-sharp teeth, each one the size of his forearm, flashed white against the darkness of its gullet. It snapped, a terrifying vacuum of water and air, inches from his face. A powerful current dragged him sideways, away from the immediate danger, but not out of reach. Screaming, a sound ripped from deep within him, Ryan kicked with desperate force. He saw its eye, huge and black, devoid of a single flicker of empathy, a cold, ancient hunger. This wasn't an animal. This was a force of nature, a living, breathing terror. His apathy, a comfortable blanket he'd worn his entire adult life, shredded into a million pieces. The mundane anxieties of office politics, the dull routine of his past existence, evaporated. Here, now, he was simply prey. A raw, primal fear seized him, electrifying every nerve. Suddenly, a translucent blue screen shimmered into existence directly before his eyes, superimposed over the churning ocean. It pulsed with a soft, ethereal glow, entirely incongruous with the brutal reality surrounding him. `<SYSTEM INITIALIZATION COMPLETE>` `<WELCOME, HOST>` `<DETECTING CRITICAL STAT IMBALANCE. IMMEDIATE ALLOCATION REQUIRED.` `<INITIAL STAT ALLOCATION AVAILABLE: 25 POINTS>` `<CURRENT STATS:` `STRENGTH: 5` `DEXTERITY: 5` `CONSTITUTION: 5` `INTELLIGENCE: 5` `WISDOM: 5` `LUCK: 5` Ryan stared, momentarily forgetting the monster that still circled. A system? Like a game? His mind, usually slow to process unexpected events, whirred into overdrive. The sheer absurdity of it, in this moment of life-or-death, was almost comical. He had been unremarkable. A cog in a vast, indifferent machine. His biggest decision usually involved what microwave meal to eat. Now, faced with a literal sea monster, he had a stat screen. The irony was almost too much to bear. Pragmatism, a trait he rarely used in his previous life, asserted itself. Survival. That was the only stat that mattered right now. He needed to think. Quickly. The shadow of the sea king still loomed in his peripheral vision. Strength. That would be for fighting, lifting. Dexterity for agility, speed. Constitution for endurance, health. Intelligence for problem-solving. Wisdom for perception, willpower. Luck… well, luck was always good. He had started with fives across the board. Mediocre. Just like him. A bitter taste joined the salt and blood in his mouth. Not this time. He would not be mediocre here. Not if he could help it.
