Chapter 8 of 10

Countdown to Zero

“It’s time for your final evaluation, Doctor. Don’t disappoint me.” Her words, cold and sharp, cut through the residual static of Luka’s shattered career. Two burly security guards, their faces like carved rock, materialized from the corridor. They did not touch Demyan, but their movements were a silent command, herding him from the suite. He moved, a marionette on invisible strings, towards an unknown destination. Zoya’s voice, a tight knot of apprehension, resonated in his mind. *They’re taking you to the central processing hub, Demyan. The nerve center of the Vesna Protocol.* Her panic tightened the knot behind his temples, pressing against his rigid composure. They marched through the Zima Institute’s gleaming, deserted passages. Glass walls reflected their procession in an endless, distorted tunnel. The air hummed with barely contained energy, a low thrumming vibration that Demyan felt deep in his bones. He tried to project an image of calm, an unconcerned subject awaiting routine assessment. It was an act he’d perfected years ago in the operating theater, masking his internal calculations with an impassive exterior. But the metallic taste of fear, unfamiliar and unwelcome, began to bloom on his tongue. The procession ended before a massive, reinforced door, emblazoned with a single, stylized helix. It slid open with a pneumatic sigh, revealing a vast, cavernous chamber. Rows upon rows of server racks pulsed with cool, blue light, their fans a collective whisper of white noise. A central dais, raised and circular, dominated the space, a single terminal station at its heart. Vlasova stood there already, a spectral figure in the ethereal glow, her hands clasped before her. Beyond the dais, a panoramic viewport showcased the jagged peaks of the Volkov Range, stark and unforgiving under a bruised sky. “Welcome, Doctor Yevgrafov,” Vlasova said, her voice amplified slightly by the acoustics of the room, devoid of its earlier predatory edge. It was clinical now, almost academic. “This is the nexus. The heart of our endeavor.” She gestured to the workstation. “Your final evaluation is not merely a diagnostic. It is a demonstration. A live integration, streamed to our… stakeholders.” Her eyes, quick and assessing, swept over him. “We will stabilize your neural architecture, purge the residual ‘echo’ anomalies, and prepare you for full assimilation into the Vesna Protocol. A full, unfettered mind, ready for deployment.” Demyan felt a cold dread seep into his core. *Deployment.* He was not a patient; he was a product. And Zoya… “Purge the anomalies?” he asked, his voice steady despite the tremor in his hands. “Are you referring to Zoya?” Vlasova’s smile was a thin line. “The Vesna Protocol requires a pristine substrate. Her fragmented consciousness, while initially useful as a stabilizing template, is now a liability. A… flaw in the matrix. Once your integration is complete, her data signature will be disaggregated, redistributed as raw processing power. A truly efficient recycling of resources.” Zoya’s silent scream tore through Demyan’s mind. It wasn’t a sound, but a raw surge of terror and pain that made his vision swim. *She means to fragment me, Demyan. To scatter me into nothingness. Don’t let her! Please!* Her desperation ignited a fire in Demyan, burning away the last vestiges of his detachment. He saw not a variable, but a soul in mortal peril. His soul. His protector. “Demyan,” Zoya’s voice returned, tighter, more focused now. *Listen to me. The main processing array. Sector Gamma-7. There’s a redundant power conduit, poorly shielded. If you can cross-link it, just for a moment, it will generate a localized power surge. Enough to trip the core regulators.* Her instructions were precise, technical jargon that Demyan, despite his specialty, understood enough to follow. He had to reach the terminal. “I’m ready for my evaluation, Doctor,” Demyan said, stepping onto the dais, his gaze fixed on the workstation. The guards remained at the door, impassive. Vlasova nodded, a subtle gesture of approval. She probably interpreted his compliance as resignation. “Excellent. Please take the chair.” She indicated a sleek, ergonomic chair that rose from the dais, adorned with various neural link ports. Demyan sat, forcing his movements to appear unhurried. As his hands settled on the terminal's haptic surface, Zoya’s urgent voice returned. *Input sequence: Delta-Niner-Seven-Zero-Six. Initiate bypass for power conduit S-Fourteen. Then… a timed overload. Point-eight seconds.* Demyan’s fingers, surprisingly agile, flew across the illuminated keys, his gaze tracking the cascading lines of code on the main screen. Vlasova watched, her face impassive. “The framework is preparing for integration. Initial diagnostics look promising.” Then, Demyan executed the last input. A low hum filled the room, then a high-pitched whine. Suddenly, a deafening crackle ripped through the air. Lights above them flickered wildly, the blue glow of the servers pulsed erratically, turning a dangerous crimson. A shower of sparks erupted from a distant server rack, followed by the acrid smell of ozone. Sirens blared, a discordant symphony of warning tones. The main screen flashed crimson: **CRITICAL UNIT FAILURE: POWER REGULATOR OVERLOAD. SECTOR GAMMA-7 OFFLINE.** Vlasova’s placid expression fractured, genuine shock parting her lips. “What…?” she breathed, staring at the flashing screen. The security guards, until now statuesque, stirred, their hands moving towards holstered weapons. This was not part of the plan. *Excellent! That bought us some time!* Zoya exclaimed, a spark of triumph in her voice. *Now, the secondary array. The Chronos Core. If we can destabilize its temporal algorithms…* Before Zoya could finish, a different set of klaxons shrieked through the facility, echoing from distant corridors. The general security alert. Red lights pulsed, bathing the central hub in a disorienting, infernal glow. Vlasova’s head snapped towards the viewport, her jaw tightening. “What now?” she spat, her voice laced with fury. “Luka. Of course.” *He’s doing it! Luka’s diversion!* Zoya cried, her voice strained but exhilarating. *Now, Demyan! The Chronos Core! It controls temporal synchronization for the entire project! Access terminal Beta-Niner! Override entry: Omega-Tau-Three-Eight-Four! Inject recursive loop, duration one-point-five cycles!* Demyan’s hands moved with practiced speed, the chaos in the room a strange accelerant. The screen sputtered, resisting his inputs, but Zoya's precise guidance was a lifeline. He plunged deeper into the system’s architecture, pushing against firewalls, bypassing authentication. The heat radiating from the board intensified, vibrating against his skin. He could hear Vlasova barking orders into a wrist communicator, her composure completely shattered. He ignored her. He slammed the final input. A blinding flash of white light erupted from the workstation. The entire chamber bucked, as if struck by an invisible force. The server racks began to spark violently, entire sections exploding in showers of molten metal and fragmented circuitry. The air filled with the screech of tortured electronics, the roar of failing machinery. A violent power surge slammed through Demyan’s body, originating from the board, bypassing all safeties. It coursed through his revived anatomy, a million volts of pure, raw energy. He felt it hit his chest, a searing jolt. His bio-engineered heart, the very core of his second chance, spasmed, then seized. The world tilted sideways. Pain, sharp and absolute, lanced through him. His vision blurred, the flashing red warning beacons becoming indistinct smears of color. His breath caught, a ragged gasp. He tried to speak, but only a gurgle escaped his lips. He tumbled from the chair, crashing to the metallic floor with a heavy thud. The sirens screamed, higher now, more frantic. Vlasova’s enraged face, distorted by fury, swam into view, framed by the chaos. He tried to lift a hand, to reach for something, anything, but his limbs refused to obey. Darkness encroached, a cold, creeping tide. The last thing he heard was Zoya’s horrified, desperate cry in his mind, fading, fading… His vision went black. His heart stopped beating.
