Chapter 6 of 10

Shadows in the Archives

The forty-five-day clock tightened like a vice around Senna’s plans. Lio’s care was non-negotiable. An annulment would sever his treatments instantly, while a lasting union meant her illicit pharmaceutical formulations—the custom compounds stabilizing both Lio and Kiran—would be unsealed during the mandatory spousal asset audit. Prison or proprietary seizure by rival firms would follow. Neither was acceptable. She needed to understand this accelerated timeline. The original covenant had promised three full months. This new vellum cut that window in half. Someone had altered the terms, or rather, leveraged an existing clause. There was only one place to trace the discrepancy: the Oakhaven Central Records vaults, situated beneath the Reyker Spire. Senna slipped out of the master suite, leaving Lio happily absorbed in refining his network counter-agent. The Spire’s lower floors were a labyrinth of gleaming, polished chrome and hushed accessways, a stark contrast to the verdant chaos of her penthouse refuge. She swiped her temporary access card, the heavy door gliding open with a near-silent hiss, revealing an expanse of towering, climate-controlled stacks that stretched to an unseen ceiling. Data crystals hummed, their soft illumination falling across rows of historical filings and municipal precedents from Oakhaven’s ruling cartels. The air was cool, dry, and thick with the scent of ozone and preserved vellum. Senna navigated the aisles, her gaze sweeping over data labels, searching for filings tagged under interim covenants or statutory acceleration. It was a needle in a haystack, but her mind, usually idling, clicked into high gear. This was a puzzle. A direct threat. After forty minutes of cross-referencing, she hit a match: 'Reyker-Mael Nuptial Agreement, Cycle 287'. Senna tapped the console, calling up the stored record. Her gaze locked on an attached rider. It was Janna. During her prior attempt to secure Kiran's assets, she had slipped an aggressive codicil into the template, cutting the trial period down to forty-five days to lock him down. The registrar, notorious for careless filing, had pulled the previous template when processing Senna's documentation. The standard ninety-day buffer had been overwritten purely by administrative negligence. Senna felt a simmering frustration build. Her fate was tethered to Janna’s past machinations, amplified by a notary’s error. Heavy bootfalls struck the marble flooring of the central corridor. A private security sweep. Senna slipped into a dead-end row holding obsolete bio-patent folios. She hadn't accounted for the night patrols. Her temporary access didn't grant her free roam. Footsteps grew louder, approaching her row. She flattened her back against a steel upright, shielded only by the dim projection of obsolete logos. Just as the heavy boots seemed to round the corner, a strong arm clamped around her waist, yanking her backward with surprising force. Senna caught her breath before the sound could carry. She was guided into a dark alcove between two towering servers, the air thick with their low thrum. The arm remained, pinning her against the cool, metallic surface, a body pressed flush against hers. Kiran. His scent, a subtle blend of crisp linen and the faint, sweet notes of her calming botanical serum, enveloped her. His breath ghosted over her ear, warm and uneven. “Senna,” he whispered, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through her. “What are you doing here?” Her heart thumped against her ribs, a frantic drum against his chest. The guard’s steps faded down an adjacent aisle, swallowed by the ambient hum of the server racks. She tried to push away, but his grip remained firm. “I… I needed to check something,” she managed, her voice oddly breathless. “The notary letter. The forty-five days.” Kiran didn’t release her. Instead, his head lowered, resting his chin on her shoulder. The intimacy of the gesture, the sudden vulnerability, made her skin prickle. “I know,” he murmured, the words almost lost in the quiet. “I saw it. I… I followed you. I couldn’t stand the thought of you being alone, down here.” His admission was a raw, unexpected tremor in the silence. Pressed against him, the reality of their shared predicament became stark. “If this expires,” Senna began, her voice barely a whisper, “if the bond becomes permanent… any legal audit of your status as CEO will expose my treatments. The unlicensed compounds I synthesized. They will send me to the Requisition Blocks, or seize the formulas by force.” Kiran’s jaw brushed her temple. “They won’t,” he stated, his voice now steel. “I won’t let them.” A sharp, saccharine laugh echoed, cutting through the hushed air like shards of glass. “Well, well, what have we here?” Janna’s voice carried through the shelving, crisp and sharp. “Lurking in the stacks, Kiran? Whatever you're hiding down here won't stay buried for long.”
