Chapter 10 of 10

Bloom of the New Heavens

805 words

A guttural scream ripped from Xue Zang’s chest, a sound born of agonizing rebirth. The pure, snow-white light radiating from him intensified, pushing out the last vestiges of purple shadow like a rising sun dispelling night. His muscles spasmed, his limbs locking and releasing in a violent, unwilling dance. The air around him shimmered, distorting, as if reality itself struggled to contain the raw, untainted force now churning within him. He clawed at his chest, his mouth agape in a silent roar as the blinding light flared, consuming him entirely. Then, with a shudder that rocked the entire Iron-Brier cage, it coalesced, no longer chaotic, but steady, bright, and utterly serene. Qian Jiuyou, sweat beading on his brow from the exertion, did not hesitate. The sapling of the World-Tree Lotus, clutched in his left hand, felt like a living heart. The moment Xue Zang’s transformed aura stabilized into a radiant, pure light, Jiuyou moved. He lunged forward, the thorny cage still a dangerous labyrinth, guided by the overwhelming purity now emanating from the Demon Lord. He knelt before the stunned, transfigured form of Xue Zang, whose eyes were now closed, his expression one of profound, involuntary meditation. With a decisive push, Jiuyou plunged the roots of the World-Tree sapling directly into the luminous energy welling from Xue Zang’s spiritual core. It was a perilous gamble, a fusion of primal life and coerced enlightenment. A roar, not of pain, but of unfathomable power, tore through the Whispering Bamboo Forest. The sapling, no longer fragile, instantly drank deep from Xue Zang’s transformed essence. Its leaves unfurled, emerald green, then swelled to the size of small sails. The trunk thickened, bark coiling and splitting with explosive force. Branch after branch erupted, piercing the roof of the Iron-Brier cage, shattering the thorny prison into a thousand splintered fragments that rained down like wooden shrapnel. The World-Tree Lotus exploded upwards, a column of pure, vibrant life. Its colossal branches, thick as ancient mountains, shot into the bruised heavens. They tore through the tattered remains of the Drifting Blossom Citadel, which had begun to reform itself from the harvested spirit-qi of the decimated swordsmen. The great lotus pads, still drifting aimlessly, were impaled, shattered, and rent asunder. The celestial foundations, once thought impregnable, crumbled under the relentless, aggressive growth. A piercing shriek, not of mortal pain but of divine agony, echoed from the sky as the parasitic heart of the immortals' reign was irrevocably annihilated. The sky, once an oppressive, grey ceiling, began to clear, revealing a vibrant, untainted azure. Amber motes of pure spiritual energy, freed from their corrupted prison, drifted down like gentle rain, bathing the forest in a cleansing light. The Iron-Brier vines, now superfluous, withered and dissolved into dust. Hua Qingyan, her robes torn and streaked with dirt, scrambled through the last of the dissolving thorns. Her blade, the Moon-Shadow Dagger, had carved a desperate path to Jiuyou. She halted as she saw him, slumped beside a figure radiating an impossible, gentle luminescence. Xue Zang sat cross-legged, his former demonic aura replaced by a serene, almost innocent glow. His eyes were still closed, his breathing slow and even, a picture of profound peace. Jiuyou, utterly spent, looked up as Qingyan knelt beside him. When she reached out, her hand brushing his shoulder, he jerked back by pure instinct, knuckles rapping her wrist away before his trembling limbs forced him still. Even hollowed out by exhaustion, he hated the pity in her breath, though he lacked the breath to curse her. “It’s done,” he breathed, his voice hoarse, a tremor of exhaustion running through him. “The heavens… they are clean.” Qingyan looked from the peacefully meditating Xue Zang to the towering, magnificent World-Tree that now pierced the sky, its crown a riot of saffron petals. She then looked back at Jiuyou, her eyes soft. “And you, blind musician? What now?” He offered a faint, tired smile. “Now… we rebuild. Without the blood price.” She gently took his hand, her touch surprisingly tender. “The leyline… it’s right beneath us.” She guided his weary palm downward, pressing it against the newly healed earth, now humming with a vibrant, untainted energy. The warmth that surged through his hand was unlike anything he had ever felt – pure, boundless, life-giving. As his fingers rested on the revitalized vein, a single, perfect golden bud detached itself from the lowest branch of the colossal World-Tree. It drifted down, landing softly in his open palm. It was small, no larger than his thumb, yet it pulsed with an ancient, knowing light. And from within its brass-bright heart, a silent, resonant hum echoed in the quiet space between them, a melody that spoke not of this world, but of distant, darker realms beyond the stars, waiting to be woven into the symphony of the Savage Garden.
