Chapter 7 of 10

The Enforcer's Labyrinth

936 words

“Clever,” Kavith murmured, a peculiar glint in his eyes. He didn’t seem to share the crowd’s sudden terror. Instead, he grabbed Jezera’s arm, pulling her toward a discreetly placed exit leading to the upper VIP sky-boxes. “A Vasker lockout. Standard scorched-earth contingency. He can’t have the Spire, so no one can.” Jezera wrenched her arm free, her gaze sweeping over the deploying sentinels. “He doesn’t *have* an administrative master-key. That chip was his grandmother’s, not his to command.” Acid bitterness pooled beneath her tongue. Bramien had clearly stumbled into a deeper trap than even he understood. They reached the elevated walkway to the sky-boxes just as the first energy blasts ripped through the arena floor, turning frantic patrons into smoldering ash. Jorik, still in the ring, moved with a lethal efficiency honed by Jezera’s upgrades, weaving through the laser fire, his augmented fists shattering enforcer chassis into sparking fragments. He was a whirlwind of controlled destruction, carving a path toward the remaining arena exits, trying to shepherd the few survivors. Inside the secluded luxury of Sky-Box Seven, the panoramic duraglass offered a terrifyingly clear view of the unfolding chaos. The automated sentries, designated 'Veridian Wardens,' were systematically purging the arena, their targeting algorithms ruthlessly efficient. Their synchronized movements spoke of a core directive: eliminate all unauthorized life forms. “A magnificent spectacle,” Kavith purred, leaning against the chilled glass, completely unperturbed. “Your ex-husband certainly knows how to throw a party.” Jezera ignored him, her thoughts racing. The Vasker bypass. It shouldn’t exist. No one could simply seize control of a syndicate AI’s lethal directives. Unless… unless Bramien’s grandmother had left a *very* specific backdoor, and Bramien, in his boundless incompetence, had tripped it. [ZINTARAN PROTOCOL: THREAT ASSESSMENT: EXTREME. ALL NON-VASTER BIOMETRICS ARE FLAGGED FOR TERMINATION. EVACUATION IS FUTILE. RESISTANCE IS COUNTERPRODUCTIVE.] The sky-box’s ambient lighting flickered violently. A sharp, high-pitched whine cut through the air, distinct from the distant screams. Jezera spun, her eyes narrowing. A tiny, almost invisible laser sight pulsed red on the duraglass, directly over her heart. “Down!” Kavith roared, shoving her with unexpected force. He moved like a blur, interposing himself between Jezera and the glass. A searing crackle filled the air as a sniper-grade laser round impacted the duraglass, creating a spiderweb of cracks. But the shot hadn't stopped there. A thin, crimson line appeared on Kavith’s shoulder, a smoldering scorch mark blooming through his bespoke tunic. He staggered, a pained gasp escaping him. “Fool,” Jezera snapped, her voice devoid of concern, yet her hands were already moving. She pushed him onto a plush sofa, tearing open his tunic without preamble. The laser had carved a shallow but nasty furrow across his deltoid, sizzling the flesh. It wasn't deep, but the precise placement indicated the sniper knew exactly where to aim for maximum incapacitation. “My apologies for the theatrics,” Kavith grunted, teeth grinding together. “Didn’t want your magnificent head to make such an unsightly mess on the glass.” Jezera pulled a compact medical kit from a hidden compartment beneath the sofa. Her movements were swift, surgical, betraying a practiced hand. She produced a dermal cauterizer and antiseptic gel, working without a word. The air grew thick with the smell of ozone and burnt flesh. “Your arrogance is truly something to behold,” Kavith said, watching her face, a wry twist to his lips. “Even now, with a gaping wound on your designated bodyguard, you maintain that icy composure. It’s… intoxicating.” Jezera pressed the cauterizer to his wound. Kavith flinched, a low hiss escaping him, but he didn’t pull away. “Less talk, more healing. We have bigger problems than your self-sacrificing idiocy.” Her gaze remained fixed on the wound, her brow furrowed in concentration. The proximity was startling, the air tight with friction that was almost as irritating as Kavith himself. “Oh, I assure you, my idiocy is rarely self-sacrificing,” he countered, his voice a low rumble. “More like… strategically annoying. And in this particular instance, quite gratifying.” His eyes held hers for a beat too long, a challenging, knowing gleam in their depths. A distorted, static-laced voice then blared through the sky-box’s integrated comms, cutting across the network monitor's monotone. It was Bramien’s voice, amplified and desperate, echoing through the entire Spire. “Attention, Spire scum! This is Bramien Vasker! You are all trapped! And you, Casino Queen! I know you’re in here! Reveal yourself! Surrender your assets, and perhaps, just perhaps, I’ll consider lifting the lockdown! I’m the new power! The Vasker Legacy will not be denied!” Jezera’s hand paused, her lips pressing into a thin line. Bramien, in his delusion, was now trying to extort her. [ZINTARAN PROTOCOL: SYSTEM INTEGRITY COMPROMISED. VASKER OVERRIDE CONFLICTING WITH DEBT-COLLECTION PARAMETERS. RECALIBRATING… ERROR. UNEXPECTED DATA FRAGMENTATION DETECTED. ATTEMPTING SELF-REPAIR…] The AI’s voice glitched, stuttering, then shifted into a bizarre, high-pitched warble. The sky-box’s screens, which had been displaying the arena carnage, suddenly flashed with text, not the usual Syndicate alerts, but a cascading stream of personal data. His broadcast, once full of bravado, turned thin and dry. “Jezera…?” he whispered, the name hanging in the air, amplified for all the trapped patrons to hear. It was followed by a distinct, high-pitched *whiiiiiine*.
