Chapter 4 of 10
The Cyber-Surgeon's Scalpel
1.1k words
The Zintaran Protocol’s sterile voice had barely finished echoing before Bramien Vasker collapsed onto the synth-marble floor, a pathetic, blubbering heap. Guests whispered, openly pointing, their faces a mixture of schadenfreude and horrified fascination. Kavith Rendar’s smirk, however, remained perfectly intact, his gaze fixed on Jezera as she rose from the synth-piano, the last reverberations of the Sonata of the Weeping Leviathan still hanging in the air. Their eyes locked across the room, a silent challenge passing between them before Jezera turned, her expression cold and unreadable.
“Jorik,” she murmured, her voice a low thrum against the rising din, “I’m leaving.”
Her head of security, ever-present, materialized beside her with uncanny speed. His cybernetic eye, usually a steady cobalt, flickered erratically. A faint tremor ran through his hand as he offered his arm, a gesture Jezera accepted without comment. She felt a subtle, disquieting hum beneath her fingers as they walked, his internal systems producing an unfamiliar vibration. As they navigated the throng of gawking socialites, Jorik’s movements became less fluid, a brief, jerky hitch in his stride betraying a growing instability.
“My apologies, Jezera,” Jorik’s voice was strained, a metallic edge marring its usual calm. “A… minor processing error. Likely residual interference from the Protocol’s announcement.”
Jezera merely narrowed her eyes. She knew better. As they reached the opulent exit, his grip on her arm tightened convulsively, then slackened. His cybernetic eye whirred, the cobalt light dimming to a sickly amber. A sharp, almost inaudible whine emanated from beneath his temple, a sound only she, with her augmented senses, could detect.
“No, Jorik,” she stated, her tone sharp, “That’s not interference. That’s degradation.” She pulled him towards a nondescript service alleyway, her usual elegance replaced by a predatory urgency. “Bramien’s clumsy attempt to crack his grandmother’s inheritance chip must have triggered a system-wide defense. A back-door trap, designed to cascade through any compromised connections. Your implant is catching the brunt of it.”
Jorik stumbled, his knees buckling. “I… I feel it… a burn… it’s spreading…” His voice devolved into a guttural moan, his body twitching with violent spasms. He crashed against the grimy alley wall, his limbs flailing uselessly.
“Stay with me,” Jezera commanded, her fingers already flying across the hidden data-pad on her wrist. She located a hidden clinic, its entrance disguised as a rusted utility panel. “The nearest hidden bay, a Class-Delta medical suite. Three hundred meters.” She dragged his convulsing form into the cramped, sterile space just as his body went rigid, eyes rolling back, a faint wisp of smoke curling from his temple.
The clinic was dim, smelling of ozone and disinfectant. Gleaming chrome tools lay on an array of trays. Jezera wasted no time. With a flick of her wrist, she activated a holographic scanner. The diagnostic shimmered over Jorik’s head, resolving into a frantic, chaotic web of data. His cerebral cortex was a storm of conflicting signals, his customized cyber-implants cooking beneath thermal surges, melting from the inside out. There was no time for anesthesia, no time for anything but precision.
“Hold still, Jorik,” she whispered, though he was beyond hearing. “This will be… stimulating.”
Her fingers moved with the blinding speed of a master artisan. A specialized micro-blade, finer than any human hair, appeared in her grasp. In a single, fluid motion, she shaved the hair from his scalp, then incised a perfect, microscopic line along his temporal bone. The skin peeled back like a flower opening, revealing the pulsating, fragile gray matter beneath. Tiny, gleaming cyber-optics sprang from her fingertips, illuminating the operative field with an intense, focused light. Her other hand reached for a pair of micro-forceps, her eyes, now a deep, analytical emerald, scanning the chaotic pathways of his mind.
She began to work, her concentration absolute. The humming, glowing instruments danced across Jorik’s exposed brain, severing corrupted connections, re-routing overloaded pathways, replacing degraded filaments with new, pristine ones. It was a symphony of precision, a ballet of life and death unfolding on the smallest possible canvas. This was her underground identity, ‘The Weaver’—the mythic neuro-craftsman who rewrote destinies with a laser-edge and an unshakable hand.
Suddenly, the clinic’s reinforced door shuddered violently. A series of heavy thuds, then a sickening crunch as the lock gave way. Three hulking figures, clad in reinforced durasteel combat gear, burst into the sterile room, their energy rifles sweeping the space.
“The Weaver!” one of them roared, his voice distorted by a vocalizer. “Bramien Vasker needs you to fix his grandmother’s inheritance. NOW!”
Jezera didn’t even glance up from Jorik’s open skull. Her micro-forceps continued their delicate work, extracting a fragment of fused alloy. “Do you not understand the concept of ‘in surgery’?” she asked, her voice calm, almost bored, though a dangerous edge thrummed beneath the surface.
The thugs advanced, their weapons raising. “Doesn’t matter. Boss says we bring you in, dead or alive. Preferably alive, so you can fix his damn chip.”
With a flick of her wrist, Jezera launched the discarded fragment of scorched substrate. It spun through the air like a deadly shuriken, embedding itself deep into the lead thug’s throat. He gurgled, dropping his rifle, clawing at the smoking wound before collapsing. His two companions froze, their postures stiffening behind their polarized visors.
“Inconsiderate,” Jezera murmured, her cauterizing lasers flaring into cutting arcs. She plucked a slender, six-inch lancet from a nearby tray. It flew through the air, a silver streak, sinking hilt-deep into the second thug’s eye socket. He didn’t even have time to scream. The third thug, now drenched in his comrade’s blood, stammered, raising his rifle in a desperate, trembling arc.
“What… what are you…” he choked out.
Jezera launched two more blades, one severing his weapon’s primary power conduit, the other piercing the flexor tendons in his wrist. He cried out, dropping the now inert rifle. Before he could react, Jezera’s foot swept out, a blur of motion, connecting with his knee with sickening force. The thug screamed as his leg bent unnaturally, a crack echoing in the small room. He crumpled to the floor, whimpering.
Still, Jezera’s eyes remained locked on Jorik’s brain. Her other hand, seemingly independent, reached down, snatching a data-pad from the last thug’s belt. Her thumb flashed across its surface, downloading its contents into her own internal storage in a micro-second, all while her micro-tools continued their minute dance within Jorik’s skull.
The data-pad’s screen flickered, displaying a dark-market transaction ledger. Her jaw tightened with venomous amusement. The transaction was recent, dated just hours ago. Payment: 50,000 credits. Service rendered: Biometric data package. Recipient: The Obsidian Syndicate’s ‘Cleanup Crew.’ Identity provided: Jezera Qyrell – Trophy Wife designation. Purpose: Lethal elimination. Time extension for Bramien Vasker: 72 hours.
