The studio lights felt hotter than the Okinawan sun, baking Ryo’s lacquered hair into submission. Beside him, Mizushima Hina radiated an impossible calm, her smile fixed as she nodded along to the host’s saccharine introduction. The show, ‘Star Pulse Live,’ was broadcast from the Helix Arc Studios, a sprawling complex in the heart of Shibunaga. Ryo’s own smile felt brittle, glued to his face with equal parts dread and adrenaline. A tiny, almost imperceptible tremor ran through his right leg. It was not a performance he was accustomed to. He scored for the shadows, for the swell of an orchestra in a darkened hall, not for the unforgiving glare of a million television screens.
“And joining us today,” the host, Daiki, with unnervingly bright teeth, boomed, “the couple everyone is talking about! Sawamura Ryo and Mizushima Hina!”
The studio crowd erupted into a carefully managed burst of applause and delighted squeals. Hina squeezed Ryo’s arm, a private signal of reassurance that only he would feel beneath the layers of his tailored suit.
In his ear, Kenji’s voice crackled, frantic even through the comms system. “Okay, Ryo, remember! Compliment Hina’s dress! It’s the ‘Starlight Cascade’ design! And Hina, mention Ryo’s new orchestral piece, ‘Echoes of Solstice’! It’s tailored for the ‘romantic musician’ narrative!”
Ryo shifted on the plush sofa. The dress, a shimmering amethyst fabric that cascaded around Hina like liquid moonlight, was undeniably striking. He opened his mouth, ready to parrot Kenji’s words.
Daiki leaned forward, his grin widening. “Now, Ryo-san, Hina-chan is simply radiant today. What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you look at her?”
Kenji’s voice, now a panicked whisper, cut through Ryo’s thoughts. “No, wait! Wrong note! The prompt was about Daiki’s new hairpiece! The one he thinks nobody noticed! Oh, for the love of—!” The line crackled, then went dead for a split second before returning with Kenji’s muffled curse.
Ryo’s mind, usually so precise with musical scores, seized. He had been so focused on ‘Starlight Cascade’ and ‘Echoes of Solstice,’ then the sudden, garbled correction. His gaze darted from Hina’s dress to the host’s crown. The host’s dark hair, neatly coiffed, looked… remarkably dense. A little too immaculate.
“Her… her hair,” Ryo blurted out, the words escaping before he could process them. He winced internally. “It’s… quite splendid. So full.”
Silence descended, thick and sudden, like a velvet curtain dropping. Daiki’s smile faltered, replaced by pure, unadulterated bewilderment. The studio’s collective gasp rose across the risers. Hina’s grip on Ryo’s arm tightened, her nails digging into his sleeve. He risked a glance at her. Her wide eyes, for a microsecond, conveyed sheer horror.
Then, like a spark on dry pine needles, a mischievous glint ignited in her eyes. Her lips, painted a delicate rose, curved upwards. She let out a small, tinkling laugh, the sound both genuine and utterly charming. She leaned into Ryo, her head tilting slightly. “Oh, Ryo-kun, you’re too sweet!” she chided, her voice playful. “Always noticing the little things! He’s so thoughtful, Daiki-san. He’s been telling me all morning how he loves my new hair color, even though it’s the same as yesterday!” She turned to Daiki, her expression one of mock exasperation. “He’s terrible with compliments for *me*, but when *you* walk in, he’s all flattery for your… razor-sharp style!”
The spectators, initially stunned, dissolved into appreciative murmurs, then outright chuckles. Daiki Shirasu, still a shade paler, managed a weak, relieved laugh. “Ah, yes, Ryo-san, always the artist, noticing the artistry in everything!” He fumbled for his cue cards. “Such a unique perspective!”
Kenji’s voice, now a triumphant squawk, burst into Ryo’s ear. “Sharp, Hina! Masterful save! Damage control achieved! Public loves the ‘awkward but sweet’ maestro!”
A thrill of victory sparked behind Ryo's ribs. Hina had saved him, and in doing so, had subtly chipped away at the polished facade of the live broadcast, introducing a dash of raw, unscripted humanity that Jinsei so despised. He saw her wink, almost imperceptibly, as Daiki moved to a different topic. *Payback,* she seemed to convey. *One small blow for genuine connection.*
The interview progressed, a dizzying blur of pre-approved anecdotes and manufactured intimacy. Hina guided Ryo through each question, her hand occasionally resting on his knee in a gesture that looked affectionate but was actually a subtle directive: *smile, nod, laugh now.* Ryo, in turn, found a strange rhythm, a new kind of composition. He was playing a duet, following Hina’s lead, improvising when necessary.
“Hina-chan, your new album, ‘Stellar Echoes,’ is setting records!” Daiki announced, holding up the album cover. “And we know Ryo-san has been contributing to your music in unique ways, with those beautiful orchestral arrangements. But there are rumors… whispers… of a new collaboration. Something even more personal?”
This was it. The moment they had rehearsed in Okinawa, the plan they had hatched in the dead of night, away from the hidden microphones. Ryo stiffened, his gaze flicking to the monitor displaying a live shot of the audience. Tachibana Jinsei was bound to be watching the live feed.
Hina sighed dramatically, a theatrical flutter of her long eyelashes. She leaned her head against Ryo’s shoulder, a picture of domestic bliss. “Oh, Daiki-san, you’re always finding out our little secrets!” She paused, a beat too long, letting the anticipation build. “Well, Ryo-kun and I… we’ve actually started working on something truly special. A new song, a ballad.” Her voice dropped, becoming hushed, intimate, as if sharing a confidence with the entire nation. “It’s… deeply emotional. Very personal. Something we’re pouring our hearts into, reflecting our journey, our… connection.”
She looked up at Ryo, her eyes shimmering with feigned adoration. “Right, Ryo-kun? We’re calling it… ‘Crimson Petals, Golden Threads.’ It’s still very much a work in progress, of course. We’re doing it all from scratch, just the two of us, capturing every raw feeling.”
Ryo held his tongue. ‘Crimson Petals, Golden Threads.’ An evocative title, invented on the spot, hinting at their shared past and future. An immaculate lie. Jinsei’s fury surely simmered across the broadcast lines. This was more than just a public declaration; it was an open challenge to Jinsei’s absolute control over Hina’s creative output. It implied a collaboration, a shared artistic vision, that completely excluded him. It said, without saying, that Jinsei was no longer her *sole* creative partner.
“Yes,” Ryo said, his voice clearer, more confident than he’d intended. He met Hina’s gaze, a flash of genuine understanding passing between them. “It’s… unlike anything I’ve ever composed. A true melding of two spirits.”
Daiki leaned closer, sensing a scoop. “’Crimson Petals, Golden Threads’! A new ballad, written by Hina-chan and Sawamura-san! You heard it here first, folks!”

Backstage, the air was thick with the acrid scent of hairspray and simmering rage. The moment Ryo and Hina stepped off the brightly lit set, the illusion shattered. Tachibana Jinsei emerged from the shadows of a darkened corridor, his customary charismatic smile a grotesque rictus. His eyes, usually cool and calculating, burned with a terrifying, unmasked fury.
He moved with predatory grace, his tall frame looming over them. The pleasant hum of the studio faded into insignificance. Ryo felt Hina flinch beside him, a subtle tremor that spoke volumes. Jinsei stopped inches from Hina, his gaze like a brand. His hand shot out, grabbing her arm with a brutal grip that made her gasp. Ryo started forward, but Jinsei’s other hand shot out, catching Ryo by the lapel of his suit jacket, yanking him closer.
“You think you can write your way out of this? I own every note you will ever sing.”
