Chapter 10 of 10
The Forty-Eight Hour Nap
1.5k words
The wind roared in Sloane’s ears, a monstrous, deafening sound that ripped at her clothes. Her vision blurred with the dizzying rush of neon lights from the buildings streaking past. One moment, the cartel chief’s blade had grazed her neck, his frantic grip digging through her collar. The next, the world had exploded downwards, a controlled demolition orchestrated by her own micro-charge. Then Corso had been there, a flash of dark fabric in the night, his arms a steel cage around her. He held her tight, a desperate anchor in the freefall, but the ground was still rushing up, a hungry maw of concrete and shattered glass.
“Any bright ideas, Brill?” Sloane yelled over the gale, her voice surprisingly calm. She tilted her head, pressing it against his chest, feeling the frantic thump of his heart.
Corso gritted his teeth, his knuckles white where they gripped her. “Trust me, I’m working on it!” Below them, the cartel lieutenant, now a ragdoll of flailing limbs, was rapidly gaining on the glowing billboard for ‘Zylos Corp – Superior Cybernetics’. He was going to make a very messy, very public statement.
Just as the pavement threatened to consume them, a sleek, obsidian hover-limousine shot out from between two skyscrapers, its undercarriage ablaze with repulsor-lights. It wasn't just any hover-limo; it was the customized, armored vehicle from the compound, complete with a reinforced roof and a mounted plasma cannon that looked suspiciously like a modified kitchen appliance.
“Gordo, you beautiful madman!” Sloane actually smiled, a genuine, unburdened curve of her lips that Corso hadn't seen in years. “Took you long enough!”
The limo swooped beneath them, its roof panel sliding open with a hiss of hydraulics. Gordo, wild-eyed and grinning like a maniac, was visible in the driver’s seat. He had a pair of enormous, grease-stained pilot goggles pushed up onto his forehead. “You think stealing Lady Vivienne’s favorite transport is easy? The security on this thing is tighter than a drum solo!” He leaned out, shouting, “Just… aim for the soft landing cushion!”
“Soft landing cushion?” Corso repeated, bewildered, as he adjusted their trajectory. The limo’s roof wasn’t soft; it was gleaming, hard alloy. He twisted in mid-air, using his own body as a shield as they impacted the open roof with a jarring thud. The momentum slammed them forward, sliding across the slick surface until they came to a stop against the raised edge of the open hatch. Sloane, protected by Corso’s broad back, only grunted.
Behind them, with a sickening *splat*, their pursuer met his fate against the smiling CEO of Zylos Corp on the massive billboard. The holographic projection flickered, then pixilated, before reforming. A lone, crimson smear lingered on the CEO’s impeccably tailored suit.
Gordo cackled, a joyous, unhinged sound. “Nailed it! Mostly! Now, before Lady Vivienne notices her ride is missing, let’s get you two lovebirds home!” He slammed the roof hatch shut, plunging them into darkness for a moment before internal lights flickered on, revealing an opulent, if slightly scorched, interior.
The journey back to the manor was a blur of fast chatter, Gordo detailing his impromptu heist of Vivienne’s vehicle and Corso fussing over Sloane’s minor scrapes. They breached the perimeter, the hover-limo practically drifting through the garage’s blast doors as if it owned the place – which, technically, it did, even if it was technically stolen from Corso’s mother.
They found Lady Vivienne Brill in the sprawling main atrium, perched imperiously on a minimalist chaise lounge, sipping what looked like vintage sparkling nebula-nectar. Her perfectly coiffed silver hair was immaculate, her gaze like twin lasers. A massive holographic screen flickered before her, displaying a replay of Sloane’s fall, Corso’s desperate leap, and Gordo’s dramatic intervention. The footage was clearly from one of the property's external surveillance drones, the kind Corso pretended didn’t exist.
She took another slow sip, her eyes narrowing. “Well, this is… unexpected.” She gestured with a dismissive hand towards the screen. “I suppose your… *tactical prowess*… is marginally acceptable. For a street urchin, that is.”
Sloane, still leaning heavily on Corso, looked at her with a single, bleary eye. Her arm was loosely bandaged from a particularly nasty graze during the penthouse assault, and her signature sweatpants were, frankly, beyond repair. “Marginally acceptable? Lady Brill, I just saved your son’s neck from a forty-story fall and prevented a global underworld data leak that would have shattered the entire city’s power structure. And all before my morning coffee.” She swayed slightly. “I think I deserve more than ‘marginally acceptable’.”
Vivienne’s delicate eyebrows arched. “Such impudence. Even after all this, you still cling to that… *poverty aesthetic*.” Her gaze swept over Sloane’s ruined clothes. “Frankly, I thought you’d be… *gone*. Your little stunt with that cartel thug seemed rather permanent.”
“Oh, believe me, I wanted to be gone,” Sloane muttered, pushing off Corso and taking a step towards the massive front door. “Preferably into a forty-eight-hour nap. But duty calls, I suppose.” She reached the door, her hand hovering over the ornate handle. “And about that poverty aesthetic… It’s comfortable. You should try it sometime. Less dry cleaning.”
Corso watched, a soft smile playing on his lips, as Sloane spun on her heel, her gaze meeting Vivienne’s. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a very important appointment with my bed.” Without another word, she opened the heavy door, revealing the stunned faces of several newly arrived security guards, and slammed it shut with a resounding *thud* that echoed through the silent atrium. The guards outside scattered like startled pigeons.
Vivienne’s mouth hung open, a rare expression of genuine shock on her face. Corso chuckled softly. “She tends to get a little… direct… when she’s tired.”
The underworld assumed The Phantom and the legendary retrieval specialist died in that penthouse explosion, a fiery, anonymous end for two operatives who vanished just as their identities were about to be exposed. Their slacker-and-techie cover, ironically, was more secure than ever before. Korsaka City believed two anonymous heroes had fallen, leaving their ‘normal’ lives untouched.
Corso found Sloane already in their sprawling, hyper-luxurious smart-bed, swathed in the finest synthetic silk sheets that adjusted to her body temperature. She was still wearing the remains of her favorite sweatpants, now ripped at the knee, but a fresh, soft medical wrap covered her arm. He sat on the edge of the bed, gently pushing a strand of hair from her face. “You really gave me a scare, you know.”
Sloane opened one eye, the corner of her mouth twitching. “Assignment accomplished, then. Sleep deprivation is a powerful weapon.” She sighed, a deep, contented sound that resonated with the quiet hum of the room. “Forty-eight hours. Uninterrupted. That was the goal, right?”
He smiled, leaning in to kiss her forehead. “Your wish is my command, my love.” He made to stand, thinking she needed her space, her quiet recovery.
But before he could pull away, Sloane’s bandaged hand shot out, her fingers curling around the collar of his expensive, custom-tailored shirt. She tugged, a surprisingly strong pull that brought his face close to hers. Her other eye fluttered open, a mischievous glint in their depths. “Oh no, you don’t, Brill. After all that chaos, you’re not getting away with just a kiss on the forehead. You caused this entire disaster trying to save my lazy hide, so you’re going to suffer the consequences.”
Corso blinked. “Consequences?”
“Mm-hmm.” She pulled him closer still, her voice a low purr. “You’re going to lie right here, with me. And you’re going to stay here. For forty-eight hours.” Her lips ghosted over his. “Consider it… a tactical cuddle operation.” She closed her eyes, pulling him down onto the vast expanse of the bed. “And don’t even *think* about moving. Or answering your comms. Or making me coffee.” Her voice drifted off into a sleepy murmur. “My solo jobs are definitely over. But these sweatpants? They’re staying.”
Corso, caught in her surprisingly firm grip, sighed, a genuine, happy exhalation. He had spent months, years, trying to navigate the treacherous currents of the underworld, balancing his empire with his carefully constructed persona. He had faced down rival syndicates, dodged assassins, and even survived his own mother. But this? Being utterly, wonderfully trapped by the woman he loved, in his own ridiculously luxurious bed, for two full days of mandated cuddling? This was the real prize. The one he’d been fighting for all along.
He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close, inhaling the faint, familiar scent of gunpowder, cheap coffee, and *Sloane*. The smart-bed hummed, adjusting to their combined weight, cradling them. Outside, Korsaka City blazed with neon, its shadows still teeming with covert wars. But inside the Brill Estate, under the watchful, now-silent gaze of the smart-mansion, two legends were finally, blissfully, off duty. For forty-eight hours, at least.
