# Chapter One: The Crossover Realm
Eons had passed since anything had truly surprised the Force of Shields.
When an entity exists beyond the boundaries of standard causality—floating in the white-hot interstitial fluid between multiversal membranes—existence tends to lose its novelty. He had watched trillion-star galaxies ignite, compress, and collapse into microscopic singularities. He had tasted the birth of fundamental dimensions and forgotten the names of ancient pantheons. In terms of raw, unbridled omnipotence, he stood on par with the cosmic architects of old: beings whose stray thoughts could rewrite infinity or snap entire continuities out of the cosmic register.
And yet, he was utterly, miserably bored.
"Nothing ever happens," the Force of Shields murmured. His voice was not sound, but rather the simultaneous vibration of ten thousand geometric planes grinding together in the abyss. "They worship. They conquer. They die. A loop without a punchline."
He hovered in the void, a colossal nexus of iridescent polyhedral barriers, shimmering light, and infinite force fields that folded into one another like an origami universe. He tilted his crystalline core toward the infinite tapestries of the omniverse. Down there, across the countless threads of reality, mortal champions bled, ran, jumped, joked, and fought for things that scarcely mattered beyond their own tiny horizons.
"If reality will not entertain me," the entity resolved, "I will simply build a playground."
He snapped a construct of light. Spacetime tore open like wet parchment.
With a sweep of his cosmic barrier, the Force of Shields reached through the fabric of thousands of dimensions at once. He grabbed chunks of planets, shattered ruins, digital landscapes, cartoon skylines, sacred mountains, and cursed ruins, slamming them together into an enormous, impossible patchwork sphere suspended in an artificial violet sky. He called it the Crossover Realm.
Then, he went fishing.
---
One second, Archie Sonic was tearing across the Great Forest at Mach 40, leaving a trench of displaced atmosphere and scorched autumn leaves in his wake while chewing on a freshly purchased chili dog.
The next second, the dirt beneath his red sneakers vanished.
Sonic tumbled through a screaming tunnel of hexagonal light, inverted three times in midair, and hit the ground with a violent skid that gouged a sixty-foot rut through solid, neon-veined granite. He sprang back to his feet in a single fluid motion, ears twitching, emerald eyes wide, his quills bristling with raw chaos static.
"Okay," Sonic muttered, wiping a speck of mustard from his cheek and scanning his surroundings. "Definitely took a wrong turn at Mobotropolis. Tails? Knux?"
"Sonic?!"
A twin-tailed fox tumbled out of a localized tear in the sky twenty feet up. Sonic blurred forward, catching Tails before he could plant face-first into the neon stone, setting him gently on his feet.
"Gotcha, little bro," Sonic grinned, though his eyes darted nervously across the horizon. "You seeing this, or did Eggman slip weird mushrooms into the Freedom Fighter rations?"
The landscape before them defied every known law of physics, geography, and common sense. Directly ahead lay rolling, emerald-green hills dotted with floating brick platforms and giant, spinning golden coins. To the left, that vibrant pastoral paradise slammed abruptly into the rusted, blood-stained industrial catwalks of an abandoned toy factory. Beyond that, snowy pine forests met ancient Greek marble colosseums beneath a violet sky fractured by colossal, translucent geometric shields hovering in low orbit.
"My scanners are going haywire, Sonic," Tails said, frantically tapping the screen of his Miles Electric. "The atmospheric composition is a composite of dozens of different realities! Spatial geometry is completely destabilized, and—look out!"
A deafening roar ripped through the sky as a jagged, floating island of volcanic rock materialized above them and smashed into a nearby hill. Molten lava spilled across the pristine green grass. From the smoke of the burning rock, a hulking, spiked silhouette rose with a furious bellow.
"Who dares kidnap the Great King of the Koopas?!" Bowser roared, flame spilling from his massive fangs. He slammed his fists onto his spiked shell, glaring down at the terrain. Right behind him, Bowser Jr. popped out of the cockpit of the Junior Clown Car, brandishing a mechanical boxing glove. "Dad! Look! It's Mario!"
"Where?!" Bowser bellowed, whipping his horned head around.
Sure enough, tumbling out of a floating green Warp Pipe fifty yards away were two mustachioed plumbers in overalls. Mario landed in a textbook combat crouch, gloves clenched, blue eyes instantly alert. Luigi landed headfirst into a yellow question block, his legs kicking frantically in the air before he slid down into a whimpering heap.
"M-Mario!" Luigi stammered, pulling his cap over his eyes. "Where are we?! This doesn't look like the Mushroom Kingdom! Or the Dark Lands! Or anywhere!"
"Mama mia..." Mario breathed, stepping defensively in front of his brother as he spotted Bowser's fiery breath lighting up the skyline. Mario pulled a Fire Flower from his overalls, flames immediately wreathing his white-and-red tunic. "Bowser! What is the meaning of this?!"
"Don't play dumb with me, plumber!" Bowser bellowed, charging forward like a freight train of scale and spike, tearing up chunk after chunk of floating turf. "You built some kind of weird warp-trap to ambush me on my day off! Junior, flatten 'em!"
"I'm on it, Dad!" Bowser Jr. cackled, revving the Clown Car's propellor and launching a barrage of homing Bob-ombs.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa! Timeout, spike-ball!" Sonic shouted, blazing across the meadow in a cobalt blur. He intercepted the first three Bob-ombs in midair, spinning like a buzzsaw to bounce them straight into the stratosphere where they detonated harmlessly in flashes of orange fire. Sonic skidded to a halt between Mario and Bowser, crossing his arms with a cocky grin. "Look, Godzilla Lite, I don't know what beef you have with the guy in the suspenders, but you're ruining the scenery. And frankly, my schedule's too packed for a giant turtle tantrum."
Bowser blinked, his tiny red eyes narrowing at the blue hedgehog. "What is that, a blue mutant pincushion? I'll turn you into ash!"
"Sonic, look out!" Mario cried, leaping twenty feet into the air with an explosive somersault, hurling a pair of bouncing fireballs straight at Bowser's snout to cover the hedgehog.
The battle erupted instantly. Bowser unleashed a torrent of dragonfire that incinerated a floating brick line; Sonic zipped through the flames using pure kinetic speed to disperse the heat, leaving blue afterimages that danced circles around Bowser's heavy swipes. Bowser Jr. swung his mechanical boxing glove, only for Tails to fly in overhead, whipping his twin tails to deflect the metallic fist with a sonic snap.
"Wait! Everyone stop!" Tails yelled over the explosions. "Look at the sky! The energy signatures aren't coming from anyone here!"
Above them, the enormous floating shields pulsed with a deep, cosmic hum, shifting like the multifaceted eye of a god watching bugs scramble in a jar.
---
Three miles away, inside the rusted, sprawling belly of the ruined toy factory, the atmosphere was considerably less fiery, but infinitely weirder.
"Mugman, I swear on the Elder Kettle, if you don't stop shaking, you're gonna spill your milk all over my shoes," Cuphead snapped, adjusting his white cartoon gloves and eyeing the shadowed assembly line with deep suspicion.
"I can't help it, Cuphead!" Mugman squeaked, clutching his blue-striped straw as gears groaned in the darkness above. "One minute we're walking through Inkwell Isle, and the next, this giant glowing wall sucks us into a haunted junkyard! What if the Devil found us again?! What if we owe more souls?!"
"Relax, will ya? We took down the Devil once, we can shoot our way out of whatever this dump is." Cuphead snapped his fingers, small blue energy sparks dancing across his ceramic fingertips.
"Oh, goody. More cartoon freaks. Just what my existential dread was missing."
Cuphead and Mugman whipped around, finger-guns fully charged with Peashooter energy.
Standing atop a conveyor belt was a tall, lanky purple rabbit in red overalls, leaning casually against a support beam with a bored, sharp-toothed grin. Beside him, clutching her checkered jester hat with trembling, manic eyes, was a small woman with mismatched digital eyes who looked five seconds away from a complete psychotic breakdown.
"Jax, please!" Pomni hyperventilated, her voice cracking as she stumbled over a rubber conveyor roller. "Where is the exit?! Is this one of Caine's adventures?! It doesn't look like the tent! It's too dark, it smells like rust, and those dishes have eyes!"
"Calm down, Pom-Pom," Jax chuckled, crossing his long arms. "If it's Caine, he really stepped up the production value. If it's not, well... at least the little cup guys look fragile enough to break when things get boring."
"Hey! Who're you callin' fragile, ya overgrown dust bunny?!" Cuphead barked, pointing both fingers right between Jax's yellow eyes. "I'll blast your ears off!"
"Try it, teacup. See what happens."
*CLANK.*
From the shadowy rafters above the conveyor belt, a mechanical sound echoed through the gloom. A heavy blue metal hand, attached to a long, extendable plastic cord, shot out of the darkness and stuck firmly to the center of Jax's face with a loud *THWACK*.
Jax went rigid. "Okay. Who threw the sticky hand."
Out from behind a stack of rusted metal crates stepped a human figure clad in industrial hazard gear, wearing a mechanical backpack with twin pneumatic launchers—the GrabPack. The Player pulled the wire taut, ready to yank.
Beside the Player, perched gracefully atop an overturned barrel, sat a porcelain doll with fiery red hair and a dark blue dress. Her wide, painted eyes gleamed in the dim fluorescent flicker of the factory.
"Be careful," Poppy said, her voice eerily sweet yet laced with ancient warning. "We aren't in Playtime Co. anymore. Something much bigger than the Prototype brought us here. It’s watching through the walls... through the sky."
"Great, a talking doll," Jax said through the blue rubber hand suctioned to his snout. "Because why wouldn't there be a talking doll? Pomni, pinch me. Actually, don't, you're sweaty."
"Look out!" Mugman screamed.
The factory ceiling buckled. A massive, floating chunk of an entirely different realm—a jagged piece of a Greco-Roman stone temple covered in ancient Greek inscriptions—came crashing down through the sheet-metal roof.
The impact crushed the conveyor belt into scrap metal, sending dust, sparks, and stone shards flying everywhere. The Player reeled back, retracting the GrabPack hand, while Jax casually sidestepped a falling steel girder that missed his ear by an inch.
Through the gaping hole in the ceiling, the violet sky roared with crackling energy.
---
High above the shattered factory, perched on the precipice where the snowy alpine woods slammed into the remains of an ancient marble amphitheater, Percy Jackson lowered his glowing celestial bronze sword, *Riptide*.
"Annabeth," Percy said, his sea-green eyes scanning the horizon. "Tell me this is some weird trick of the Labyrinth."
Annabeth Chase stood beside him, her Yankees cap tucked into her belt and her bronze dagger drawn, her gray eyes furiously analyzing the broken geometry of the world around them. "The Labyrinth doesn't bend planetary curvature like this, Percy. Look at the horizon—it loops back up into a convex dome. It's an artificial pocket dimension. And the celestial bodies aren't aligned with anything in our universe."
"So... no Camp Half-Blood across the river?"
"Not unless Chiron recently installed floating golden rings and giant spiked turtles."
"Darn," Percy sighed. "I was hoping for archery practice."
*WHIRRRRR-CLICK.*
From behind a broken marble pillar, a blue-armored figure stepped forward with pinpoint mechanical precision. His left arm was transformed into a sleek, glowing plasma cannon that hummed with concentrated solar energy.
"Halt," Mega Man commanded, his robotic optics scanning both demigods. "Energy readings from your weapons do not match standard Robot Master signatures. State your affiliation. Are you working for Dr. Wily?"
Percy raised an eyebrow, glancing at Annabeth. "Did Leo make this guy? He feels like something Leo would build if he had too much sugar and a blue paint can."
"I am Mega Man," the blue bomber replied, keeping his buster leveled. "I defend peace and justice. Stand down until I can verify your threat level."
"Hey, easy with the hair dryer, blue," Percy said, raising *Riptide* defensively. "We're not looking for a fight, but I'm not putting my sword away because a walking toaster told me to."
"NYEH HEH HEH!"
A booming, theatrical voice shattered the tension. From the top of a snowbank ten yards away, a tall, dramatic skeleton wearing a red cape, white battle armor, and blue trunks struck a triumphant, heroic pose.
"HALT, STRANGERS!" Papyrus declared, hands on his hips, his cape flapping in an unfelt wind. "DO NOT FEAR! FOR I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, HAVE ARRIVED TO CAPTURE YOU ALL AND BRING GLORY TO THE ROYAL GUARD! ...OR PERHAPS OFFER YOU SOME CELEBRATORY MULTIVERSAL SPAGHETTI! I HAVE NOT QUITE DECIDED YET!"
Sitting lazily against the base of a Corinthian column right behind him, hands stuffed into the pockets of a blue hoodie and pink slippers propped up on a rock, was a shorter, wider skeleton.
"heya," Sans said, offering a small wave with a lazy grin. "don't mind my brother. he's really putting his *backbone* into the welcoming committee."
Papyrus's jaw literally dropped. "SANS! THIS IS NOT THE TIME FOR TERRIBLE PUNS! WE ARE IN AN UNKNOWN METAPHYSICAL CONSTRUCT AND I MUST MAKE A HEROIC FIRST IMPRESSION!"
"i dunno, bro," Sans shrugged, his white eye-lights glancing upward toward the sky. "looks to me like someone else already made the first impression."
Percy, Annabeth, Mega Man, and Papyrus all stopped and looked up.
The violet sky above them began to ripple.
Across the entire Crossover Realm—from the chaotic plains where Sonic, Mario, Tails, and Bowser were still trading blows, to the ruined toy factory where Cuphead, Jax, and the Player were bickering among the rubble, to the snow-covered colosseum—the atmosphere went utterly, terrifyingly still.
The giant translucent shields hovering in the stratosphere ignited with blinding, prismatic light. The geometric patterns rotated, forming a singular, colossal emblem that stretched across the entire sky: a radiant shield flanked by shifting, omnipotent runes.
A voice descended. It did not echo through their ears; it resonated directly inside the marrow of their bones, the data-chips of their processors, and the souls within their chests.
**"CHAMPIONS OF THE FRAGMENTED REVEAL."**
The voice was grand, smooth, and laced with absolute, terrifying indifference.
**"I AM THE FORCE OF SHIELDS. YOU HAVE SPENT YOUR EXISTENCES FIGHTING OVER PEBBLES IN DUSTY CORNERS OF CREATION. YOU DEFEND KINGDOMS THAT WILL FADE. YOU SEEK VENGEANCE THAT AMOUNTS TO NOTHING. YOU ARE POWERFUL, CLEVER, AND PITIFULLY CONFINED."**
Down on the plains, Bowser roared at the heavens, spitting a fireball that dissipated uselessly against the lowest atmospheric barrier. "Show yourself, coward! Face the King of the Koopas!"
**"YOU AMUSE ME,"** the Force of Shields continued, ignoring the beast entirely. **"THIS REALM IS YOUR NEW CRADLE AND YOUR ARENA. FIGHT. SURVIVE. FORM YOUR PETTY ALLIANCES OR TEAR EACH OTHER TO PIECES. ENTERTAIN ME, AND PERHAPS A FEW OF YOU WILL WITNESS THE DAWN OF A NEW OMNIVERSE. BORE ME... AND I WILL SIMPLY CRUSH THE BOUNDARIES AND BEGIN AGAIN."**
The light flared once, an unbearable pulse of raw, kinetic pressure that dropped Percy to one knee, forced Mega Man's internal gyros into emergency stabilization, and made even Sans's perpetual grin tighten with rare, chilling awareness.
Then, the voice faded, leaving only the sound of cold wind howling through the stitched-together biomes.
"A cosmic entity," Annabeth whispered, her knuckles white around her dagger. "He isn't just powerful. He's treating us like pawns in a sick game."
"Yeah?" Percy stood back up, adjusting the grip on his bronze blade, a fierce, reckless grin returning to his face. "I've killed gods before. What's one more?"
"We need to gather the others," Mega Man said, his buster lowering as his systems registered no immediate malice from the demigods. "If we are scattered, we are vulnerable. We have to coordinate."
"WELL THEN!" Papyrus shouted, pumping a skeletal fist. "LET THE GREAT PAPYRUS LEAD THE RESCUE EXPEDITION! SANS, PREPARE THE SNACKS!"
"already on it," Sans winked, pulling an entire bottle of ketchup from his hoodie.
---
Miles away from the rest of the scattered fighters, in the deepest, most desolate trench of the Crossover Realm, the air did not smell of ozone, ash, or magic.
It smelled of burning mako.
The terrain here was a wasteland of jagged black obsidian and crystalline craters, jutting up like broken teeth against the violet void. No birds flew. No wind blew. The ground was silent, dead, and heavy with a suffocating, gravitational chill.
From the dark clouds above, a single, pitch-black feather drifted down.
It spun slowly through the dead air, landing gently upon the edge of an enormous, smoldering crater.
Inside the crater, where the earth had been scorched down to the bedrock by the dimensional impact, a figure stood motionless amid the smoke.
His long, silver hair hung straight down past his shoulders, catching the pale, dying light of the sky. He wore a dark, high-collared leather coat that parted slightly over his chest, immaculate and untouched by the multiversal tearing that had deposited him there. In his right hand, angled casually toward the black earth, rested the hilt of a blade so impossibly long its gleaming edge stretched nearly seven feet behind him—the Masamune.
Sephiroth did not look confused. He did not look angry. He did not look at the sky with fear or defiance.
Slowly, his luminous, cat-slit mako eyes opened, glowing with an unholy, brilliant cyan radiance in the dark.
He raised his head slightly, sensing the thousands of distinct heartbeats, energies, and souls now scattered across this artificial world. A faint, terrible smile touched the corners of his lips.
"So," Sephiroth whispered, his voice smooth as silk and cold as the grave. "A new world to burn."
He swung the Masamune in a single, effortless arc. The sheer displacement of air sliced a jagged fissure fifty yards through the obsidian stone, sending dark flames erupting into the quiet dusk.
The games had only just begun.
# Chapter Two: The First Trial
The obsidian trench did not stay silent for long.
A hundred miles away from Sephiroth’s smoldering crater, the patchwork fabric of the Crossover Realm groaned like the hull of an overstressed submarine. Tectonic plates of incompatible realities ground together in a shower of blinding sparks. Floating islands of green turf inverted, spinning like rogue gyroscopes, while the industrial catwalks of the toy factory groaned and tore free from their rusted anchors.
High above the chaos, the violet sky did not merely glow—it crystallized.
The colossal polyhedral shields that made up the celestial ceiling rotated in unison, clicking into a concentric mandala of blinding prismatic light. Down below, the landscape began to fold violently inward, pulled toward a single point on the horizon by an irresistible gravitational tide.
**"ATTENTION, SPECIMENS."**
The voice of the Force of Shields rolled across the fractured biomes, shaking the very atmosphere until clouds shattered into geometric dust.
**"CON
## Chapter Three: Reflections
The hiss of depressurizing obsidian was the sound of a guillotine falling in reverse.
Around the perimeter of the Prism Bastion’s apex, sixteen monolithic pods vented plumes of freezing, violet-black vapor. The mist poured over the polished crystalline floor, pooling in the microscopic telemetry circuits that had just finished harvesting every heartbeat, sprint, and strike the champions possessed.
Inside the pods, shadows tore themselves free from the glass.
They stepped onto the white crystal not as mere duplicates, but as cruel, exaggerated mockeries of the originals. Where Sonic was cobalt blue and windblown kinetic energy, his reflection was a jagged, oil-slick silhouette of matte black quills, its body vibrating with unstable static and dripping scarlet plasma that sizzled against the floor. The plumber reflections emerged side by side: a hulking shadow in stained crimson overalls whose hollow eyes burned with violet flame, and a lanky, spectral green shade whose limbs bent at impossible, disjointed angles.
Beside them, a dark facsimile of Bowser dragged massive obsidian claws across the crystal with a sound like screeching iron, its spiked shell weeping molten slag, while a miniature metallic terror floated above it in an iron clown car that grinned with shark-like razors. A corrupted demigod drifted forward, enveloped in a swirling vortex of black, poisoned brine, his blade a jagged shard of midnight bronze. Flanking him stood a strategist of pure ash, her hollow eyes calculating murder through broken geometric glyphs.
From the remaining pods stepped the rest of the nightmare: a war-machine replica of Mega Man with an oversized, humming cannon dripping radioactive crimson; an industrial stalker wearing the Player’s silhouette with rusted, barbed wire coiled around twin hydraulic grabbers; cracked porcelain caricatures of Cuphead and Mugman weeping viscous black ink from jagged grins; a towering skeletal phantom in spiked red plate whose hollow eye sockets flared with cold malice while a shorter, slouching specter hovered in the background with a single void-purple pinprick glowing beneath his hood; and a stretched, impossibly lanky purple rabbit with needle-like teeth standing over a twitching, wireframe jester whose limbs glitched through the floor.
"STAGE TWO: THE REPLICATION MATRIX," the Force of Shields thundered from the heavens, his cosmic laughter rattling the ribs of every living soul on the platform. "EVERY DRIFT, EVERY FLAME, EVERY DESPERATE STRATEGY YOU EMPLOYED IN THE CANYON WAS OBSERVED, CATALOGED, AND REFINED. YOU BELIEVED YOU WERE FIGHTING TO SURVIVE. IN TRUTH, YOU WERE MERELY WRITING THE SCRIPT FOR YOUR OWN EXTINCTION."
The cosmic entity’s multi-layered voice vibrated through the white spire. "LET US SEE IF YOUR COOPERATION AND IDENTITY CAN WITHSTAND THE PERFECTION OF YOUR OWN CORRUPTED WILLS. BEGIN."
"Great," Sonic spat, dropping into a low three-point stance, chaos electricity crackling along his spine. "Because one of me wasn't handsome enough for this dimension."
The dark speedster opposite him didn't speak. It simply vanished.
*BOOM.*
The shockwave tore a trench through the crystal floor. Sonic reacted by instinct, throwing himself backward in a backflip as a streak of black-and-crimson light cleaved the air where his nose had been a microsecond prior. The dark reflection didn't just match his speed—it over-cranked it. It pivoted on a dime of pure kinetic friction, its foot slamming into Sonic’s ribs with the force of a falling meteor. Sonic skipped across the white platform like a flat stone across water, crashing into the crystalline base of a perimeter spire before sliding to his feet.
"Sonic!" Tails yelled, hovering into the air with his twin tails spinning like twin rotors.
"Stay back, Tails!" Sonic coughed, wiping a smear of glowing blue chaos residue from his lip. "This guy isn't just fast—he's reading my acceleration before I even kick off!"
Across the arena, chaos erupted in a symphony of violence.
"Let's-a go!" Mario shouted, lunging forward with a leaping spin. He hurled a barrage of bouncing Fire Flowers across the crystal, aiming straight for his dark double.
The dark plumber didn't dodge. It caught the twin fireballs in its blackened palms, absorbed the thermal energy in a hiss of violet steam, and thrust its hands forward. A roaring tsunami of black cinder and violet napalm erupted back at Mario, blasting the plumber through the air. Luigi scrambled forward in a blind panic to catch his brother, only for the spectral green shade to materialize directly above him, stomping down with earth-shattering kinetic malice. Luigi barely rolled out of the way, whimpering in terror as the platform beneath him cracked into spiderwebs.
"YOU DARE COPY THE KING?!" Bowser bellowed, stomping toward his obsidian counterpart. The King of the Koopas drew a massive breath and unleashed a column of apocalyptic dragonfire hot enough to melt stone.
The dark Bowser didn't flinch. It opened its cavernous jaw and swallowed the flames whole, its chest glowing with blinding volcanic pressure before it slammed both fists into the deck. An omnidirectional shockwave of concussive force and molten spikes exploded outward, lifting Bowser’s massive bulk off his feet and throwing Bowser Jr.’s Junior Clown Car into an uncontrolled tailspin.
"Dad!" Junior screamed, firing a pair of mechanical boxing gloves from the hull. The dark junior’s clown car caught them in midair with crushing steel jaws, snapping the metal linkages like dry twigs.
Nearby, Percy Jackson sprinted forward, unhooking Riptide as celestial bronze flared with sea-green brilliance. He swung a horizontal slash aimed to bisect his dark reflection at the waist.
The abyssal double met the stroke perfectly. Its blade of black bronze locked against Riptide with a screech that sent sparks showering over the crystal. Before Percy could twist the guard, the dark reflection summoned a geyser of brackish, caustic bilge directly beneath Percy’s boots, scalding him with pressurized acid and throwing him backward into Annabeth.
"Percy, watch out!" Annabeth warned, raising her celestial bronze dagger to parry a flurry of strikes from her own shadow. But the dark Annabeth anticipated every feint, every pivot, her obsidian blades moving with algorithmic perfection. "She’s countering every stance I learned at Camp Half-Blood! She knows my attack vectors before my muscles even contract!"
"Scanning targets!" Mega Man’s voice rang out. The Blue Bomber leveled his Mega Buster, charging his solar energy until the barrel whined with brilliant turquoise light. "Charged Shot—fire!"
The plasma sphere blasted across the arena toward the dark machine. The corrupted Mega Man didn't bother dodging; it raised an angular, hexagonal energy shield—an exact miniature replica of the Force of Shields' barrier tech—and reflected the charged blast back at twice its velocity. The blast struck Mega Man dead in the chest armor, sending him skidding across the deck with sparks showering from his damaged plating.
Beside him, the Player leveled their GrabPack and fired the blue pneumatic hand toward the corrupted machine's core. But the dark industrial shade anticipated the cable's trajectory, catching the rubber hand in mid-air with a rusted, barbed-wire claw and yanking hard. The Player was yanked off their feet, dragged across the floor toward an electrified perimeter grid before barely cutting the pneumatic tether in time.
"Keep shootin', Mugs! Keep shootin'!" Cuphead hollered, his ceramic fingers blazing with a continuous barrage of blue Peashooter sparks.
Mugman was crying while firing frantic Chaser rounds, his knees knocking together violently. "It's not workin', Cup! It's just makin' 'em angrier!"
The cracked, ink-dripping porcelain doubles strode straight through the hail of cartoon bullets. Every projectile that struck their bodies simply melted into their viscous, blackened glaze, swelling their size. Dark Cuphead pointed a crooked, sharp-nailed ceramic finger and unleashed a colossal, roaring laser beam of concentrated void ink that ripped the floor apart and sent the two brothers tumbling head-over-heels into a heap.
"NYEH HEH... OH NO!" Papyrus cried out, summoning a magnificent barricade of white magical bones to shield himself and Sans. "BROTHER! MY SHADOW DOES NOT APPRECIATE MY DRAMATIC POSTURING AT ALL! IT IS QUITE RUDE!"
The towering dark skeleton didn't pause. With a single flick of its wrist, it summoned a wall of jagged, obsidian bone spikes that punched clean through Papyrus’s defenses, shattering the magical construct into glowing dust.
"yeah, well," Sans muttered, lazily dodging a sweeping wave of purple bone magic with his hands shoved deep into his hoodie pockets, though sweat beaded on his skull. "turns out our evil twins are working on a pretty *strict* schedule. no breaks. zero chill."
"Oh, this is just peachy," Jax drawled, casually vaulting over a sweep of razor-sharp claws from his towering rabbit double. "A knockoff that's even taller and uglier than me. Tell me, tall-dark-and-pointless, do you also have crippling emotional detachment, or did they only copy the good looks?"
Beside him, Pomni was in full existential meltdown, dodging frantic, glitching sweeps from her digital shadow. "Jax, it's unraveling my polygons! It's—it's stretching into wireframes! I don't want to become abstract geometry again, Jax!"
"Relax, clown girl," Jax sighed, ducking under another slash. "Just try not to think about the fact that we're trapped in an interdimensional colosseum being farmed for content. It really ruins the mood."
Near the center of the platform, Poppy knelt over one of the glowing micro-circuits embedded in the crystalline deck. Her delicate porcelain hands hovered above the light pathways, her red hair rustling in the violent winds of battle. Her glass-like eyes narrowed with an ancient, chilling clarity.
"These are not simple illusions," Poppy whispered, her voice carrying an eerie weight that cut through the thunder of combat. "They are not even true clones. They are the Bastion’s telemetry given physical shape. Every strike we land directly against them feeds the central processor! It updates their predictive models in real time!"
"She's right!" Annabeth shouted, parrying another vicious thrust from her shadow and rolling backward to join Sonic and Percy. "Stop trying to fight your own doubles! Every time you use your signature techniques, you're handing them the data to counter you!"
"Great theory, Wise Girl!" Percy shouted, parrying a burst of black water that hissed against Riptide. "Got a plan B before my evil twin turns us into fertilizer?"
Annabeth’s gray eyes darted across the battlefield, taking in the patterns: the glowing circuits beneath their feet, the way the dark reflections moved in rhythmic, synchronized intervals, and how the Force of Shields’ microscopic energy bus pulsed every time a hero clashed with their duplicate.
"The reflections are hardwired into the Bastion’s grid!" Annabeth declared, her mind racing at tactical speed. "They're synchronized to our individual profiles. If we fight individually, we lose. But the system can't calculate *chaos*—it can't predict combinations from worlds it hasn't mapped together!"
"Cross-dimensional synergy," Mega Man said, his internal diagnostics flashing green as he recalibrated his systems. "If we attack targets that don't match our data logs, their predictive algorithms will experience fatal calculation errors!"
"And we don't just hit the doubles," Sonic said, a wide, razor-sharp grin returning to his face as blue electricity surged across his quills. "We hit the network under their feet! We scramble the floor!"
"ALLEY-OOP!" Papyrus cheered, striking a heroic pose. "I AM READY TO PERFORM UNPREDICTABLE AND INVENTIVE VIOLENCE FOR JUSTICE!"
---
A half-mile away, high on the sheer crystalline ridge flanking the Bastion’s outer ring, Cloud Strife knelt beside the shattered remains of an atmospheric conduit.
His blue mako eyes narrowed. The crystalline conduit wasn't glowing with the Force of Shields' clean, geometric violet energy anymore. Deep within the lattice, a thick, virulent emerald sludge was pulsing like a diseased artery, corroding the pure crystal into black, jagged glass.
"It's spreading," Cloud said softly, his hand resting on the hilt of the Buster Sword strapped to his back.
Beside him, Sora leaned over the precipice, the Keyblade held lightly in his grip. The boy’s usual cheerful expression was gone, replaced by a tense, focused frown. "I can feel it, Cloud. It’s not just darkness... it feels cold. Like a memory that wants to eat everything."
"It's not a memory," Cloud muttered. "It's him."
A sudden drop in temperature made the air crackle with frost.
From the dense emerald mist billowing out of the conduit breach, a solitary figure walked into view. His long silver hair caught the dim light of the violet sky, floating slightly in the unnatural updraft. Across his right shoulder, a single, massive black feathered wing unfurled, its dark plumage scattering embers of green mako into the wind. In his right hand, the seven-foot steel of the Masamune rested casually against the crystalline floor.
"How touching," Sephiroth murmured, his voice a melodic, venomous purr that resonated across the ridge. "The lost children struggle against their own shadows, blind to the grander design taking root beneath their feet."
Cloud rose smoothly to his feet, drawing the massive Buster Sword with a sharp scrape of steel. "You're not interested in this trial, Sephiroth. What did you do to the regulator?"
Sephiroth’s lips curved into a faint, cruel smile. He didn't look at Cloud; his cat-slit cyan eyes remained fixed on the swirling energy spire above the Bastion’s summit.
"This realm is a masterpiece of containment," Sephiroth said softly. "Countless worlds, stripped of their boundaries, woven into a singular tapestry of infinite energy. The entity who built this cage believed he was merely gathering specimens for his amusement."
Sephiroth lifted the tip of the Masamune, pointing it toward the Bastion’s core.
"He did not realize he was gathering the perfect vessel. When this realm is drenched in the Lifestream of a thousand shattered stars, Mother and I will forge our Promised Land from its bones. And his power... will belong to me."
"Not while I'm breathing," Cloud said, lowering into his signature battle stance.
"We won't let you destroy these worlds!" Sora shouted, pointing the Keyblade directly at the One-Winged Angel, the weapon’s tip glowing with pure, golden light.
Sephiroth’s smile widened, cold and utterly devoid of mercy. "Then come, Cloud. Let me show you what happens when reality itself learns to despair."
---
Back on the arena floor, Annabeth’s voice rang out like a battle horn: "NOW! BREAK THE FORMATION!"
The champions moved as one, shattering every pattern the Bastion’s computers had recorded.
Sonic didn't charge his speed-double. Instead, he bolted sideways, hooking an arm around Percy Jackson’s waist and accelerating into a Mach-30 whirlwind. "Hold on to your sword, Seaweed Brain!"
"Whoa—hey!" Percy shouted as the world blurred.
Sonic whipped around in a tight centrifugal arc, using the immense momentum to launch Percy across the arena straight toward *Dark Mega Man*.
The robotic shade raised its energy shield to deflect plasma—only for Percy to slam down from above, driving Riptide straight through the barrier emitter. In the same breath, Percy summoned a pressurized torrent of ocean water from the air itself, flooding the robot's exposed circuits
Mega Man! Electrify it!" Percy roared, leaping clear.
Mega Man lunged forward, sliding across the wet crystal. Instead of firing at his own reflection, he aimed his charged buster directly into the puddle beneath the submerged robotic shadow and the advancing Dark Mario. "Thunder Beam—MAX VOLTAGE!"
A blinding web of turquoise lightning exploded through the water. The electrical surge surged through the crystalline floor circuits, feeding massive feedback loops directly into the Bastion’s telemetry bus. Dark Mario and Dark Mega Man shrieked in digital agony as their predictive matrices short-circuited under the incompatible elemental fusion.
"MY TURN!" Papyrus bellowed.
Instead of defending against the skeletal phantom, Papyrus stomped the ground, summoning a massive wall of blue bones directly beneath the feet of Dark Bowser. The sudden shift in gravity flipped the colossal obsidian beast onto its back.
"GET 'EM, POPS!" Bowser Jr. yelled, dropping a payload of Bob-ombs straight onto the overturned monster's underbelly.
"BWHAHAHA! OUT OF MY WAY, REPLICAS!" Bowser roared. He tucked his limbs in, curling into a roaring, fire-wreathed spiked shell and spinning across the arena like a bowling ball of pure demolition. He smashed clean through the pinned Dark Bowser, ricocheted off the perimeter barrier, and slammed headlong into Dark Annabeth, obliterating the ash-tactician into a shower of harmless gray cinders.
"Cuphead! Sans! Over here!" the Player signaled, firing the GrabPack’s remaining orange hand.
The industrial tether latched onto Dark Cuphead’s ceramic handle, violently pulling the corrupted cartoon off balance.
"you got it, kid," Sans winked.
A massive, skull-shaped Gaster Blaster materialized in the air above them, its jaws unhinging with a hum of void magic. Simultaneously, Cuphead leaped into the air, spinning upside down as he fired a fully-charged Mega Blast from his porcelain fingertips.
KABOOM!
The combined beam of cartoon plasma and spectral magic struck the GrabPack’s target dead center. The blast ripped through Dark Cuphead and Dark Mugman simultaneously, blowing them into a cloud of sizzling, non-Euclidean ink that splattered harmlessly across the deck.
"Jax! Catch!" Pomni screamed, accidentally hurling a stray cluster of Papyrus’s loose magical bones while flailing her arms.
"I don't play fetch, but fine," Jax sighed. With terrifying agility, the purple rabbit caught three bones in mid-air and threw them like javelins, pinning his own shadow and Dark Pomni to the floor by their clothing. "Stay. Good evil twins. Don't make me get the rolled-up newspaper."
Across the Bastion, the sixteen dark reflections began to shudder violently. Their synchronized movements degenerated into erratic, glitching twitches. The telemetry circuits beneath their feet were sparking, overloaded by the champions' refusal to fight predictably.
"THEY ARE FAILING!" the Force of Shields roared from the sky, his cosmic face flickering with sudden annoyance. "IMPOSSIBLE. THE ALGORITHMS WERE ABSOLUTE! YOU CANNOT OVERCOME YOUR OWN METRICS!"
"Newsflash, Shield-Face!" Sonic yelled, skidding to a halt beside Mario and Percy, his quills glowing with kinetic fire. "You can copy our moves, but you can't copy the heart! We're not a math equation!"
"Let's-a finish this together!" Mario cheered, fist in the air.
The heroes gathered at the center, preparing for a final, coordinated strike to wipe the remaining destabilized reflections from the Bastion.
Then, the world stopped breathing.
CRACK.
It was not the sound of breaking crystal. It was the sound of reality being sliced by a blade that recognized no physical laws.
A sickly, poisonous emerald light bled through the white crystalline floor, swallowing the golden circuits. From the outer rim of the Bastion, thick veins of corrupted dark mako surged inward like black vines, hissing with the genetic screams of a cosmic parasite.
The remaining dark reflections didn't just glitch—they mutated.
Where the shadows had once mirrored the heroes, they now twisted into grotesque, alien horrors. Spikes of dark bone erupted from their shoulders. Tendrils of mako-infused flesh tore through their silhouettes. Crimson eyes multiplied across their shifting forms as they let out unholy, distorted screeches that sounded like a chorus of dying stars.
"WARNING: SYSTEM INTEGRITY COMPROMISED," the Force of Shields' voice boomed, but for the first time, the divine arrogance was gone, replaced by jarring, dissonant static. "FOREIGN ENTITY DETECTED IN THE ATMOSPHERIC CORE. UNKNOWN CODE... OVERWRITING REALM PARAMETERS. EXHIBITION HALTED. PROTOCOLS... UNRESPONSIVE."
"It's here," Poppy gasped, her porcelain hands flying to her mouth as her painted face went pale with dread. "The voice in the walls... it's not the Force of Shields anymore. It's the Calamity from the stars. It has infected the core from the inside out!"
At the shattered edge of the Bastion, Sephiroth walked into view, stepping over the smoking debris of the perimeter barrier. Behind him, Cloud and Sora charged in pursuit, their weapons trailing arcs of light, but Sephiroth didn't even turn to face them.
He plunged the Masamune deep into the Bastion’s central power crystal.
"Let the cosmos burn," Sephiroth whispered softly. "And from its ash, Mother shall reign."
SHATTER.
The entire apex of the Prism Bastion fractured into a thousand massive, falling shards. The crystalline floor gave way beneath the champions' feet, collapsing into an infinite, yawning abyss of swirling emerald mako and violet void.
"HOLD ON TO SOMETHING!" Annabeth screamed over the deafening roar of the collapse.
"HOLD ON TO WHAT?!" Percy yelled back as gravity vanished.
"EXHIBITION COMPROMISED," the dying voice of the Force of Shields echoed through the sky as his celestial face fractured into static. "CONTAINMENT... FAILING."
Falling through the emerald-drenched chasm, Sonic reached out, catching Tails with one hand and grabbing Mario's glove with the other as debris and mutated shadows plummeted alongside them into the dark, uncharted depths of the broken realm below.
High above the collapsing spire, floating serenely in the eye of the destruction, Sephiroth smiled down at the falling heroes.
The Force of Shields had built their arena.
The next trial would not be his.
*SUPER CROSSOVER FIGHTERS - CHAPTER 4: The Fall Through Worlds*
"MY TURN!" Papyrus's bellow was still echoing off the collapsing crystal when the floor gave out entirely.
There was no ground anymore. Only the sound — that sickening, low emerald crack as Sephiroth's Masamune sank to the hilt in the Bastion's heart, and the entire Prism Bastion shattered like a dropped chandelier.
"HOLD ON TO WHAT?!" Percy screamed, and it was a fair question. Gravity inverted, then vanished, then became a suggestion. Sonic tumbled end over end still holding Tails and Mario's glove, Mario was holding onto Bowser's tail, Bowser was holding onto Bowser Jr., and Bowser Jr. was holding onto a Bob-omb that was very politely not exploding.
"WARNING: SYSTEM INTEGRITY COMPROMISED," the Force of Shields tried to say, his voice breaking into a thousand panicked whispers. "CONTAINMENT— CONTAINMENT—"
The corrupted Mako didn't care about containment. It surged up from the wound in the core in thick, black-green vines that pulsed like veins, latching onto the sixteen glitching reflections and _pulling_. The shadows stretched. Bone tore through ink. The Dark Cuphead that Sans and the real Cuphead had just blasted apart reformed mid-air with an extra row of teeth and a spine made of crystal.
"Oh, that's new," Cuphead said, his straw bending straight. "Mugman, did yours do that?"
"NUH UH!" Mugman yelled.
From below, the abyss wasn't empty. It was breathing.
Poppy was the first to see it, because she knew what infected walls looked like.
"Below us! Something's catching us — no, something's being _pulled_ in!"
The abyss wasn't a void. It was a wound between worlds, and the Prism Bastion's collapse had torn it wide open. Through the swirling Mako, they could see flashes — not of sky, but of other places entirely. A checkerboard hill that looped forever. A kindergarten hallway drawn in crayon. A stage that smelled like grease and old pizza.
And then they hit.
They didn't hit ground. They hit _dirt_. Fresh, solid, ordinary dirt, floating in the middle of the void like an island.
CLANG!
A shovel the size of a broadsword had been driven into a chunk of crystal, and from that shovel hung a blue knight.
Shovel Knight twisted, kicked off the crystal wall, and landed hard on his own dirt platform, sending a shockwave through the Mako. His armor was scratched, his cape was torn, but his stance was perfect.
"Travelers! Thou stand upon unstable ground!" he announced, as if this was completely normal. "I, Shovel Knight, was investigating a strange tremor in the Plains when the sky tore open and —"
He was interrupted by a laser beam from a giant skull.
Sans's Gaster Blaster, still lingering from the last attack, misfired in the free-fall and vaporized Shovel Knight's dirt. Shovel Knight pogo-jumped off the blast itself.
"—AND I SEE I AM NEEDED!"
Percy landed next to him, summoning a bubble of water to cushion Annabeth. "Who are you?"
"The hero of this story! Also, perhaps, of yours!"
Before anyone could answer, the frozen air cracked with heat.
"REX! DON'T JUST STAND THERE!"
A boy in a battered salvager suit fell screaming past them, followed by a girl with fire-red hair who was not falling so much as descending angrily. Pyra landed feet-first on the Mako vines, and where her feet touched, the corruption burned white.
"Pyra!" Rex flailed. "A little help!"
Mythra took over in a flash of light, grabbed Rex by the collar mid-air, and tossed him onto Shovel Knight's platform like luggage.
"Honestly," Mythra muttered, her golden eyes sweeping the mutated reflections. "Another god with a big sword complex? We just left one."
Rex ignited his Aegis sword. "We got your back! Whatever this is!"
The Mako recoiled from Pyra's flame. That was when it screamed — not from the reflections, but from the darkness _behind_ them. A low, wet, stretching sound.
"Playtime..." a small voice giggled from a hallway that wasn't there a second ago. It was plastic yellow, lined with smiling posters that were now melting.
Poppy froze. "No. No no no."
Doey the Doughman pushed his way through the melting hallway, his three faces shifting — one laughing, one crying, one furious. He stretched his dough arms wide and caught Jax, Pomni, and Papyrus who were still free-falling.
"Friends! You looked like you needed a catch! The Hour of Joy is over! I think!"
Jax immediately tried to wriggle out. "Great. The huggy one. Put me down."
"Shh," Doey said, with all three voices at once. "If we fall, we fall together."
The last platform to form was the worst. It didn't form at all — it slammed down from above. A cold, heavy pizzeria stage, complete with velvet curtains and a smell of old oil.
THOOM. THOOM.
Freddy Fazbear landed, his eyes dead, his jaw hanging loose, but his endoskeleton whirring. Behind him, Bonnie and Chica followed, their movements jerky, as if fighting the Mako trying to puppet them too.
"K-Kids..." Freddy's voice box stuttered, fighting the corruption. "S-SYSTEM... INTRUDER..."
Mega Man raised his buster. "Wait — they're not infected. They're resisting it!"
Annabeth, ever the tactician, saw it instantly. "The Mako can't possess them! They're already possessed by something else! They're immune!"
Freddy looked at her and gave a slow, terrible grin. "LET'S PARTY."
Sephiroth had been watching from above, his coat untouched by the collapse. The sight of new pieces entering his board seemed to amuse him.
"More insects falling into the lifestream," he said softly. "Mother will have such variety."
That was a mistake.
Because variety was exactly what the Player needed.
The Player's GrabPack, which had been dead since the Bastion's power died, suddenly screamed back to life, not with blue or orange, but with pure, white light that reflected every newcomer — Shovel Knight's honor, Pyra's fire, Doey's stretch, Freddy's stubborn soul.
"Guys!" Mario yelled, understanding first. "We-a need to combine!"
"Electrify it again!" Percy yelled, already pulling water from nowhere, from the moisture in Freddy's old pipes, from Doey's dough.
"With WHAT?!" Tails yelled.
"WITH EVERYTHING!" Sonic screamed, and started spinning. Fast. Faster than he'd ever spun. His quills left a trail of golden static.
Shovel Knight slammed his shovel into the ice forming on the Mako vines — ice that hadn't been there before. Ice that smelled like mountain air and blood.
Everyone looked up.
Standing on a piece of falling crystal that was now completely frozen solid, holding an axe that was still steaming from the throw, was a bald man with a beard, and a boy with a bow.
Kratos did not introduce himself. He just threw the Leviathan Axe a second time.
The axe spun, froze the entire chasm wall, froze the mutated Dark Bowser mid-roar, froze a wave of Mako in place, and then returned.
The boy — Atreus — fired an arrow of light into the frozen Mako. It cracked.
"NOW!" Annabeth screamed.
"THUNDER BEAM— MAX VOLTAGE!" Mega Man roared again, but this time Percy fused his water with it, and Pyra superheated it, and Shovel Knight grounded it with his shovel.
A column of electrified, boiling, sacred water tore through the frozen abyss.
The Jenova-infected reflections shrieked as their borrowed flesh was boiled, electrocuted, and shattered.
Bowser, still a spiked shell, saw his chance.
"BOWSER... FINAL... BOWLING!"
He launched off Freddy Fazbear's head — Freddy didn't even flinch — and became a meteor of shell and fire, smashing through the frozen Dark Bowsers, through the crystal, straight toward Sephiroth.
Cuphead and Mugman, hand in hand, jumped after him.
"PARRY!"
They slapped Bowser's shell mid-air, and the parry flash turned Bowser's fire from red to pink and gold — invincible.
Sephiroth finally raised his Masamune to block.
The impact didn't make a sound. Light just ceased for a second.
When vision returned, the Bastion was gone. The platforms were gone. They were all standing — somehow — on solid nothing, breathing hard, surrounded by a ring of sizzling black ash that had once been the dark reflections.
Above them, Sephiroth floated, coat singed, a thin line of blood on his cheek. He touched it, looked at it, and smiled.
"Interesting," he whispered. "You are not metrics. You are... chaos."
From far below the nothing, where the abyss should have ended, a new light began to rise. Not emerald. Not gold.
A bright, goofy, hand-drawn green.
And a voice that was way too cheerful for the end of the world said:
"Oops! Looks like someone ordered a new world and forgot to pay shipping!"
Gumball Watterson waved from a floating cloud, holding a remote that said "REALITY" on it.
Next to him, Dandy the flower was already trying to sell that remote for 300 Tapes.
The fall had stopped.
The second trial had just begun.
