Chapter 6 of 10

Wings of Obsidian

The clang of the gates being torn from their hinges reverberated through the very stones of the forge. Ziva didn't wait for Drazhan to move, didn't bother to feign composure. She spun, slamming her palm against the heavy iron door of the cage, the reverberation stinging her skin. “Drazhan! We have to go! Now!” Her voice, stripped of its usual saccharine lilt, cracked with raw urgency. His pitch-black gaze, still fixed on her, slowly shifted. The cold radiating from him intensified, choking the confined space with frost. He didn’t open the cage. Instead, with a low growl that vibrated through the floor, he tore the colossal door of the forge from its hinges. It peeled back with a shriek of tortured metal, revealing a crumbling, smoke-filled passage leading upwards. The air thrummed with distant shouts and the clash of steel. “Ziva. Stay. Here,” he commanded, his voice deeper, rougher, edged with an unfamiliar ferocity. He moved towards the gaping exit, his shoulders already broadening, the jet-black scales along his arms thickening. This wasn’t a human transformation, but something far more primal, an unleashing. “Are you insane? You want me to sit here and wait for the Frost Guard to find me? I’m coming with you!” She scrambled out of the cage, her legs aching from the tension. She knew the Frost Guard, the Tsar's personal legion, would be relentless. And she knew Drazhan, in his anger, would be blind to her safety. Her plan to escape was already shattered; her new, desperate objective was to keep Drazhan from becoming the very villain she sought to prevent. He hesitated, a flicker of something unreadable in his eyes, before turning back and snatching her arm. His grip was a vice, but he didn't crush her. He pulled her along, his movements unnaturally swift as they navigated the debris-strewn passage. The flagstones trembled with each distant impact. Ahead, dull light filtered through gaps in the ceiling, illuminating motes of ash dancing in the fractured beams. They burst into the main bailey, a maelstrom of chaos. Snow mixed with ash fell from a sky the color of bruised plums. The central spire of the Keep, a landmark for generations, was now a jagged stump of broken masonry. Bodies—Frost Guard clad in their signature plate armor of blued steel, and the few remaining guards of the Keep—littered the slush. The air reeked of ozone and blood. Matriarch Vesna stood in the center, her pale flaxen hair unbound, whipping around her face. Her hands were raised, a shimmering amethyst aura pulsating from her palms. Her lips moved in a guttural chant, a string of archaic words Ziva recognized from her fragmented memories of the novel as the ‘Chant of Enslavement’, a forbidden invocation meant to bind wills. Before them, several Frost Guard soldiers, their faces grim under their visored helmets, advanced on a figure that could only be Drazhan’s foster father, the elderly Captain Orlok, already bleeding from a gash across his brow. Vesna ignored them all. Her gaze, sharp and predatory, fixed on Drazhan. The amethyst aura intensified, lashing out like spectral whips. “My Prince!” Vesna’s voice, now devoid of its usual gentle lilt, boomed across the open stone, laced with venomous triumph. “It is time to embrace your destiny. Obey your Matriarch! Destroy them all! And then… come to me.” Her final words were a hypnotic rasp, aimed directly at Drazhan. Drazhan stiffened, his black scales flaring, his eyes glowing with an internal, furious light. The purple tendrils wrapped around his form, seeming to burrow into his skin. He snarled, a sound more beast than man, and staggered, his gaze momentarily unfocused. His grip on Ziva’s arm tightened to a painful degree. He was fighting it. Then, with a sickening *groan*, the stone archway directly above Ziva’s head gave way. Vesna, with a subtle flick of her wrist, had triggered a localized collapse. A massive timber beam, thick as a tree trunk, plummeted towards her. Ziva cried out, stumbling backward, tearing her arm free from Drazhan’s grasp. She couldn't react fast enough. The beam struck her left leg with sickening force. A searing agony exploded through her, sending her sprawling onto the frozen ground. Splinters of wood and chunks of stone rained down, obscuring her vision. Pain lanced through her, stealing her breath. She tried to push herself up, but her leg refused to bear weight, a sharp, ragged shard of bone visible beneath her torn trousers. Blood bloomed rapidly across the snow. “Ziva!” Drazhan’s roar was raw, guttural, a sound of pure anguish and rage. The binding tendrils around him snapped, shriveling to smoke. His monstrous transformation, which had been slow and gradual for years, accelerated with sudden, brutal speed. His form blurred, expanding. His clothing ripped apart, unable to contain the growth. Armored plates, sharp and gleaming, burst through his skin, forming an impenetrable carapace over his chest, shoulders, and limbs. His eyes, already glowing, flared to a vicious, malevolent crimson. From his back, with a sound like tearing canvas and cracking ice, colossal wings erupted. They were jagged formations of pure, dark ice, edged with razor-sharp glassy feathers, each span easily twice his height. A blast of supernaturally frigid air ripped through the stones, freezing the blood beneath him to glittering crystals. The Frost Guard, momentarily stunned, recovered quickly. “The beast is loose! Bring him down!” one shouted, leveling a crossbow. Bolts, gleaming like slivers of moonlight, zipped through the air. But they simply shattered against Drazhan’s newly formed armor, clattering harmlessly across the cobbles. He moved. Not like a man, but like a vengeful storm. His new wings beat once, twice, sending gusts of freezing wind that knocked several soldiers off their feet. He closed the distance to the nearest group of Frost Guard with impossible speed. His massive claws, now tipped with onyx talons, scythed through the air. A sickening *CRUNCH* echoed as he tore through blued steel and flesh. Armor crumpled like parchment. Limbs were rent from torsos. Screams, short and abrupt, were swallowed by the escalating chaos. The Frost Guard, elite and hardened, fell before him like scarecrows in a gale. They had mocked his ugliness, starved him, exiled him. Now, he was their undoing. He didn’t just kill; he annihilated. Each swipe of his claw, each beat of his icy wings, was a declaration of absolute, slaughterous power. Their weapons, their training, their numbers meant nothing. They were simply meat for the grinder. Within moments, the enclosure was a slaughterhouse, strewn with mangled bodies and shattered armor. The pavers beneath him were slick with ichor and snow, his dark scales reflecting the crimson carnage. The last soldier fell, a final gurgle lost in the sudden, ringing silence. Drazhan stood amidst the devastation, his chest heaving, vapor coiling from his monstrous form. The crimson glow in his eyes pulsed, hungry. Slowly, deliberately, he turned his head, his gaze sweeping over the carnage, then settling on the collapsed archway where Ziva lay bleeding, struggling to push herself free. She met his gaze, no longer seeing the boy she had tried to save, but a creature of pure, unadulterated primal fury. His massive, clawed hand began to rise, slowly, inexorably, towards her.
