Chapter 39: The Conclave's Gaze
1.4k words
Elara stood, alone, in a room designed for intimidation. It was vast, circular, with walls of polished obsidian that swallowed the meagre light from the aether-lamps suspended high above. The air was cold, stale, carrying the faint metallic tang of old mana-circuitry and something else – ozone mixed with the faint, unsettling scent of ancient parchment and dust. His own breathing sounded unnaturally loud in the oppressive silence.
He'd been led here, through a labyrinth of hushed corridors within the Conclave Spire, by two silent Guardians whose scaled armour had clinked softly with every measured step. Now, they stood sentinel at the sole archway, their presence a silent, unwavering threat.
Before him, a crescent-shaped table of dark, veined stone occupied the centre of the room. Three figures sat behind it, cloaked in the deep violet robes of the High Archons. Their faces, etched with lines of authority and decades spent wielding formidable power, were impassive. Elara felt like an insect pinned under a magnifying glass.
"Elara Theron," the central Archon intoned, his voice deep and resonant, like stones grinding together. Archon Valerius, Head of the Conclave's Scrutiny Division – a man whose gaze was reputed to peel back layers of deception. His eyes, the colour of glacial ice, rested on Elara.
"You stand accused of wielding unclassified, unregulated magic in the recent Void Blight incursion in the South Reaches."
Elara’s throat felt dry. He swallowed, the sound echoing hollowly. "Accused? I aided the citizens. I repelled the Blight where Novice summons faltered." He knew it sounded defiant, perhaps foolishly so, but the injustice of it rankled.
"Aided them, yes," a softer voice chimed in from the Archon to Valerius's right. This was Archon Lyra, her silver hair coiled into an elaborate braid, her expression less severe, more analytical. "But *how*, Elara? Our reports indicate a sudden, localised dissipation of Void energy, a phenomenon inconsistent with any known summoning tier, even an Archon-class ward."
"My… my echoes," Elara started, the familiar inadequacy of the term catching in his chest. "They… they just reacted. They pushed it back." He could feel the familiar, faint thrum beneath his skin, the low, steady pulse of the echoes, a comfort against the cold scrutiny. They felt agitated, unsettled by the oppressive atmosphere. He focused on it, on their steady rhythm, trying to project a sense of calm he didn't feel.
Valerius leaned forward, his elbows resting on the table. "Echoes. A convenient label for that which you cannot categorise, boy. Tell us, what form do these 'echoes' take? What tier are they? What is their essence?" Each question was a hammer blow against Elara's carefully constructed ignorance.
"They don't have a form, not usually," Elara admitted, choosing his words carefully. He thought of the fleeting shield, the blunt impact he'd recently managed. He hadn't revealed that to anyone. "They're… energy. They disrupt the Void Blight."
He risked a glance at Lyra, hoping to find some understanding, but her face remained a mask of professional inquiry.
"Disrupt?" Valerius scoffed, a dry, rustling sound. "The Void Blight, even in its weakest manifestation, corrodes aetheric constructs. It devours mana. How could formless energy 'disrupt' that which consumes all?"
Elara felt a flush rise to his cheeks. The echoes within him surged in response to the scorn, a low hum intensifying, a faint warmth spreading through his chest. He clenched his fists, forcing the raw energy back down. *They don't understand. They can't.*
"They just do," he insisted, a touch of desperation in his voice. "When I… when I try, they can coalesce. Into a… a barrier. Or a focused impact." He hated exposing even this much, knowing how much it contradicted everything they believed.
The third Archon, a portly, grim-faced man named Archon Theron (no relation, Elara knew, but the shared name always made him bristle), finally spoke. "Coalesce? Are you suggesting they are shapeshifters? Mimicking the abilities of elemental sprites, perhaps? That is an even greater breach of protocol. Unregistered shapeshifters are a grave danger to the public and the very fabric of our summoning tenets."
Elara felt a surge of indignation. "They don't shapeshift! They are just… what they are. They adapt!" His voice rose, betraying his carefully maintained composure. He felt a sudden, almost imperceptible *shift* in the air around him, a tiny, fleeting ripple, as if the space itself had momentarily warped in response to his heightened emotion. It was gone before he could truly register it, a phantom sensation.
Archon Lyra's eyes narrowed, not in anger, but in intense observation. Her gaze flickered to the empty space beside Elara's left hand, then back to his face. "Adaptive, you say. And you claim no formal training in the manipulation of 'unclassified energies'?"
"I was trained at the Novice Spire, like everyone else," Elara replied, frustration mounting. "But my summons never manifested beyond… echoes. They were useless, supposedly. Until the Blight."
"Useless, until convenient, you mean," Valerius retorted. "Or perhaps you've been deliberately concealing their true nature. We have records of your attempts at the trials, your repeated failures to conjure anything beyond these 'wisps' you call echoes. Yet now, suddenly, they possess the power to repel a threat even seasoned Novice-tier summoners struggled with?" He leaned back, a subtle smirk playing on his lips. "It strains credulity, Master Theron."
The Archon's condescending tone stung more than any accusation. It dismissed his struggle, his constant battle against inadequacy. He remembered the humiliation, the whispers, the label of 'failure'.
"I didn't ask for this power," Elara said, his voice dropping to a low, intense murmur. "It just… appeared. When Aetheria needed it." He felt a strange resolve settle over him, a quiet defiance. He might be an anomaly, a failure in their eyes, but his echoes had saved lives. That was enough.
---
A long, uncomfortable silence stretched between them. Elara could feel the echoes within him, a subtle pressure, a quiet readiness. They felt attuned to the Archons' veiled hostility, their unseen doubts, almost as if sensing the negative resonance and bracing against it. It wasn't a conscious command, but a primal, protective response. He felt a distinct coldness, not from the room's temperature, but emanating from Valerius – a suppressed mana signature, a hidden layer of defensive warding that spoke of deep-seated fear. His echoes seemed to subtly push back against it, a faint shimmer in the air that only *he* could feel.
"The Conclave cannot permit unsupervised, unknown powers to operate within Aetheria's sanctioned territories," Archon Theron declared, breaking the silence. "It sets a dangerous precedent. It undermines the very order we have painstakingly maintained for centuries."
"Order?" Elara thought, a bitter taste in his mouth. *Their* order. An order that condemned him, an order that was now failing against the very darkness his 'unclassified' power fought.
"We have reviewed the historical texts, Elara," Lyra stated, her voice softer, but no less firm. "There are whispers of 'primordial energies' in pre-Aetherian lore, vague mentions of 'First Entities' that existed before the Great Sealing. But these are considered myths, fables, dangerous knowledge." Her gaze held a flicker of something Elara couldn't quite decipher – curiosity? Fear? "Your descriptions bear an unsettling resemblance to some of these... tales."
Elara's breath hitched. *Primordial energies. First Entities.* The words resonated with a strange, deep echo within him, a sensation akin to memory stirring, though he'd never heard them before. Was this what the reclusive scholar, Master Lyra, had been hinting at? A history deliberately forgotten, or perhaps suppressed?
"We are not suggesting you are intentionally tapping into forbidden lore," Valerius interjected, cutting off Lyra with a sharp glance. His tone was dismissive, almost hurried. "Merely that your abilities are... unprecedented. And therefore, a threat."
"A threat?" Elara repeated, the absurdity of it almost making him laugh. "To the Blight, perhaps. Not to Aetheria."
"A threat to the *order* that protects Aetheria," Valerius corrected, his voice hardening. "Power without classification is chaos. It unravels the tapestry of our understanding. It breeds fear." He paused, his gaze boring into Elara. "We cannot allow you to continue operating unchecked. You will be assigned to a monitoring unit. All your future summoning activities will be observed, reported, and if deemed necessary, curtailed. Your echoes will be studied. Analyzed. Classified. For the good of Aetheria."
Elara felt a cold dread settle in his stomach. Studied. Classified. They wanted to dissect his connection, to cage what they didn't understand. The echoes within him seemed to recoil, a visceral, almost painful sensation.
"And if I refuse?" Elara asked, his voice barely a whisper, yet carrying a surprising edge of steel.
Valerius's eyes narrowed. "Refusal, Master Theron, would be met with appropriate action. The Conclave takes the integrity of Aetheria's magical framework very seriously. We have means to ensure compliance." A subtle pulse of mana, sharp and biting, emanated from Valerius, directed solely at Elara, a clear warning. This time, Elara distinctly felt his echoes *flex*, pushing back against the Archon's power, creating a minute, almost invisible distortion in the air directly around him, a flicker of light refracting strangely against the obsidian wall. It was gone in an instant, but he *felt* it. A silent, defiant stand.
Lyra watched, her expression unreadable, then she cleared her throat. "That will be all, Elara Theron. A Guardian will escort you to the monitoring facility. Your immediate cooperation is expected."
Elara said nothing. He simply turned, his back to the three powerful Archons, and walked towards the archway. His heart pounded, a frantic drum against his ribs. The pressure was immense. He was being caged, stifled. But as he walked, a different thought began to form, driven by Lyra's words and Valerius's dismissive haste. *Primordial energies. First Entities. Dangerous knowledge.*
If the Conclave feared what he was, and if they were so quick to suppress any hint of forgotten magic, then perhaps their "order" wasn't as stable as they claimed. Perhaps the true threats weren't just the Void Blight, but the very secrets they kept buried. Elara felt a new resolve, cold and sharp, solidify within him. They wanted to classify him? They wanted to control him? He would learn first. He would uncover the forbidden truths, even if it meant defying the entire Conclave. His echoes, a silent chorus within him, hummed in agreement.
