Chapter 9 of 10
The Eviction of Aethel Corp
862 words
Loose data pads skittered across the five-degree slope toward torn metal seams as the high-rise sheared along its rivets. The mutilated CEO, a grotesque fusion of man and void-matter, hacked up a jagged laugh, his voice a broken whisper of static. “The board will not surrender. This whole sector will be a monument to my… vision.”
Zoya slammed her fist on the console, her face pale beneath a sheen of sweat. “He’s right. The overload purge will obliterate everything within a two-kilometer radius. The Sinks… gone.” She spun to Orik, sweat dripping into her lashes. “The only way to stop this is to reroute the primary root-tether, pull all that raw breach current somewhere else. But even with the Executive Key, it’ll take more than just a mainframe command. We need… a *lot* of leverage. A massive, instantaneous redirect of spatial pressure.”
Orik stared at the CEO, at the collapsing walls, at the frantic data scrolling across Zoya’s screen. His mind raced, calculating, weighing. He thought of the shimmering mana-crystals, the bubbling concoctions in the Grand Alchemy Lab, the delicate flora of the Glasshouse. His treasures, meticulously hoarded, each a hard-won victory. Each a part of him.
The Sinks. His home, however squalid. The people, however nameless. They would be erased. And with them, his impossible flat, his nascent empire, everything he had built.
A cold, hard clarity settled over him. He had learned the true cost of hoarding. It wasn’t just the attention it drew; it was the paralysis it induced when faced with absolute loss. This wasn’t about ownership anymore; it was about survival. About buying his life outright.
“The rooms,” Orik bit out, his voice raw. “The Glasshouse. The Lab. Swap them.”
Zoya blinked, her expression a mix of shock and confusion. “What are you talking about, Orik? Trade what?”
He ignored her, his gaze fixed on nothing, speaking to the unseen interface that dictated his reality. “I command an immediate asset trade. The Mana-Crystal Glasshouse. The Grand Alchemy Lab. Offer them as leverage against the board's primary root-cable. Force the acquisition now!”
The air around them crackled. A shudder ran through the buckling apex suite. A deep, resonant chime rang through the floorplates. Then, a prompt flared, burning scarlet against the chaos:
[IMMEDIATE ASSET TRANSFER INITIATED. VALUATION: 1,500,000 SPATIAL CREDITS.]
[HOSTILE ACQUISITION AUTHORIZED. TARGET: AETHEL CORP PRIMARY ROOT-TETHER.]
[TRANSFER COMMENCING. PREPARING INTEGRATION PROTOCOLS.]
As the last message faded, a shear line ripped through the apex suite. Orik felt it, a phantom limb suddenly severed. The hum of crystal sap and the vinegar tang of the burners vanished, claimed by the broker's ledgers. In their place, a vast, hungry emptiness bloomed.
“Now, Zoya!” Orik roared, turning back to the CEO. The mutated executive was still attempting to crawl away, his laugh turning into a gurgle of terror as he sensed the sudden shift in planar equilibrium. The void-tendrils lashing from his form began to recede, shrieking.
Orik launched himself forward. No longer holding back, no longer conserving. This was the final price, paid in the currency of his own hard-won space. His right fist blazed with the crimson inferno of Cinder Fist, while his left, imbued with Shadowrend Slice, became a shimmering distortion. He moved with the devastating, earth-shattering momentum of Dragon’s Maw Decimation, a leased fury unleashed.
The CEO shrieked, a sound of pure agony and impotent rage, as Orik’s twin strikes connected. Cinder Fist incinerated the twisted void-matter of his torso, burning it to non-existence, while Shadowrend Slice phased through what remained, severing the core of his dimensional distortion. There was no splatter, no body. Only a sudden, implosive rush of air as the CEO’s reality was simply… unmade.
Meanwhile, Zoya’s fingers flew across the console, a blur of desperate precision. The Executive Override Key glowed, feeding data directly into the mainframe. “It’s working! The leverage… it’s enough! Redirecting… rerouting… come on!”
The building’s groaning crescendo reached an unbearable peak. Metal shrieked. Glass exploded inward, sucked towards a nascent singularity forming in the center of the roof chamber. The floor beneath them bucked violently, throwing Orik and Tarkis off their feet. Tarkis, who had been a silent observer, now gripped his chipped blade, his knuckles white. “The air… it’s being eaten!”
Then, just as the tower frame seemed poised to implode, a silence fell. Not a gentle hush, but an abrupt, deafening *absence* of sound. The tearing stopped. The suction ceased. The tilting floor leveled itself with a faint, settling creak.
Zoya slumped against the console, breathing heavily. Her screen flashed, displaying a single, triumphant word: *REDIRECTED*.
[HOSTILE ACQUISITION COMPLETE. AETHEL CORP ROOT-TETHER RECONFIGURED. ALL EXTRACTION RIGHTS TRANSFERRED.]
[REWARD: AETHEL CORP’S TOTAL ASSETS ACQUIRED.]
A low thrum vibrated through the superstructure, rising from the foundational pylons into the exposed beams. Outside the sealed window-plates, a faint, almost invisible wave of pure, concentrated energy rippled outwards across the city of Korsav, a silent declaration. Inside the roof chamber, the air compressed, then rebounded. With a soundless lurch, the corporate spire simply shifted into void space. Seamlessly, impossibly, the colossal structure vanished from its coordinates, folding into itself, becoming one with the impossible mansion behind Orik’s rusty metal door.
