Chapter 1 of 10

The Rusty Door

1.2k words

The metallic tang of rust and stale air coated Orik Vang’s mouth in his three-meter pen within the Sinks. His closet-apartment, a bolted-shut coffin tucked deep within Korsav’s subterranean sprawl, vibrated with the distant thrum of heavy machinery and the closer, more immediate thud of fists against his door. The barrier was merely a sheet of corroded ferro-steel salvaged from a defunct ventilation shaft, now bowing inward with each strike. “Vang! Open up, you scuttler! Eviction notice 47-Beta is past due!” A voice, thick with synthesized aggression from a cheap vocoder, grated through the thin metal. It belonged to a collector named Dralon, recognizable by the steel-capped treads he favored for breaching tenements. Orik knew the man's rasp as intimately as the cracks spiderwebbing across the plaster overhead. He hugged his knees, pressed into the furthest corner, a meager barrier of repurposed food containers and tattered data-slates his only defense. Hoarding was no quirk; it was survival. Every scrap, every discarded circuit, every empty nutrient paste tube had a potential, however small. Down here, where scrubbed oxygen carried a metered surcharge, discarding salvage was suicide. The debt ring, another tentacle of the conglomerate that ruined his family, wanted these final tiles of concrete. Another boot hammered the plate until the sheet split, exposing Dralon's sweat-streaked jaw through the jagged seam. “Thought you could hide in your little rat hole forever, Vang?” He shoved his arm through, fumbling for the crude bolt on the inside. Just as his fingers brushed the latch, a silent, emerald glow bloomed in the corner of Orik's vision. A holographic interface, sharp and intrusive, materialized before him. [Welcome, Spatial Administrator Candidate: Orik Vang.] [Initializing Spatial Sublet System…] [Detected immediate threat: Forced Eviction. Current Spatial Integrity: Critical.] [Mission Objective: Survive the eviction by defeating all hostile entities.] [Reward for success: Spatial Expansion, Leased Skill: ‘Cinder Fist’ (Tier 1).] [Penalty for failure: Total Spatial Collapse. Eradication from reality.] Orik stared. The glow pulsed, the system’s voice echoing in his mind, not a sound, but a direct neural input, chilling and urgent. Eradication from reality? Was this some hallucination brought on by starvation and fear? His family, his life, his very existence had been erased by the corporations once. He refused to be wiped clean again, not while a scrap of territory remained. The prompt gave no room for deliberation. A second prompt flashed. [Accepting mission. Good luck, Administrator.] A dry scorch settled into his knuckles, firming his grip with unnatural heat. He looked down. His knuckles, usually pale and scarred, now shimmered with faint, orange light. “What are you doing in there?” the thug barked, shoulder wedging the slit wider. He’d almost gotten the bolt. Orik moved. It wasn't his movement. His muscles snapped into unfamiliar alignment. He lunged, not forward, but *up*, his hand blurring as he snatched a heavy, rusty pipe that had been leaning against the wall—a hoarded relic from a plumbing repair he’d never finished. The pipe felt weightless, an extension of his will. He slammed the pipe into the thin gap Dralon had created. The swing drove forward on borrowed momentum, spiked by the flame skill. The steel pipe crushed the torn barrier, trapping the intruder's wrist against the frame with a wet splinter of bone. The brute shrieked, thrashing against the pinned metal. “My arm! You filthy rat!” Two heavy hitters behind him wedged shock mauls into the gap, ripping the panel free. Twin-headed hydras wound down their collars—muscle bought out of the lower dregs. Grease-streaked brows jutted under the yellow strip lights outside. Panic failed to arrive; cold calculation locked behind his ribs instead. His body moved, ducking a wide swing from Jaxx's club, the air whistling where his head had been a nanosecond before. The Cinder Fist pulsed. He swung the pipe, not at Jaxx, but at the flimsy support strut above the doorway. The reinforced concrete cracked, showering dust and debris. He snapped the pipe forward into Krell’s gut, the skill discharging a concussive shock through the hollow iron. Krell folded, spewing bile across his own boots. Jaxx snarled over his falling partner, swinging his stun bat in a heavy descent. Orik held his ground and deflected. Iron met electrified alloy; the cinder brand ignited on contact, shorting the bat's capacitor back into the wielder's wrists. Jaxx cried out, his hands going numb, his club flying from his grasp to clatter against the far wall. Before Jaxx could recover, Orik launched himself, a blur of motion. He didn't hit with the pipe. He hit with his Cinder Fist, a direct, savage punch to Jaxx’s jaw. The strike landed with the dull crack of a breaking jaw. Jaxx's eyes rolled back, and he crumpled, unmoving. Krell scrambled backward along the tiles, but Orik cut him off. A quick, precise kick to the temple, again guided by the leased skill, silenced him. Dralon hung limp against the frame, blood dripping from his pinned wrist into the rust. Silence dropped over the hall. Orik wiped spit from his chin, chest hitching over the three bodies. He had dropped an entire extraction squad single-handed. The glow faded from his skin, leaving an acrid smell of burnt copper. Then, the emerald glow returned, brighter this time. [Mission Objective: Completed!] [Reward: Spatial Expansion Initiated!] [Leased Skill: ‘Cinder Fist’ (Tier 1) has been added to your available skill list!] A low rumble started, deep within the walls. Not the hum of exhaust shafts, but tectonic grinding sealed inside a closet. A section of the grimy ferro-steel wall, where the enforcers had just been battering, began to shimmer, then glow. The metal dissolved, not into dust, but into pure light, revealing a pristine, solid oak door, rich with polished grain and an ornate bronze handle. Orik, still reeling, cautiously approached the new door. He reached out, his hand trembling, and pushed it open. The air on the other side was crisp, clean, faintly smelling of polished wood and fresh linen. It wasn't the Sinks. It was a spacious, immaculate room with high ceilings, polished dark wood floors, and a single, perfectly centered tatami mat. Sunlight streamed from a high, arched window, cutting amber bands across the floor. A *Dojo*. And in the center of the tatami mat, cross-legged, sat a man. He wore spotless black weave, spine squared, a lacquered scabbard resting across his shins. He had striking, high cheekbones and eyes like chips of obsidian. He was meticulously arranging a scattered pile of Orik’s stale, multi-grain nutrition chips on the mat before him, sorting them by perceived crunchiness. “About time,” the man grunted, picking up a particularly brittle chip and popping it into his mouth with a crisp snap. He chewed slowly, regarding Orik with an unnervingly calm gaze. “You’re Orik, yes? I’m Tarkis Vo. Heard you were looking for a roommate. Don't worry, I’ll cover my share of the rent. Mostly. Now, about these ‘chips’... a strange delicacy, but not entirely without merit.” Orik stared as fresh script tore across his sight, eclipsing the dojo and the swordsman crunching through the stale chips. [Spatial Upkeep Rent Due: 72 hours.] [Penalty for default: Total Spatial Collapse.]
