Heart of the Dragon

from the famished primordial entity. *This altar… it is a feast beyond reckoning. To devour it whole, to absorb its essence and break this curse… the price is no longer mere stone or treasure. It is the core of your existence. Your heart. Surrender it. I will consume this world. You will rise anew. Or you will die, a pathetic meal for a lesser being. Choose, mortal.* The fiend, having shrugged off Siyue’s spear with a casual tremor, reformed, its gaze locking onto Lie’s rapidly fading form. A skeletal hand, formed of congealed gloom, reached out, its clawed fingers sharp as obsidian blades, descending for the killing blow. Lie, his remaining strength a mere flicker, coughed a spray of blood. His hand, shaking violently, covered in the viscous fluid of the altar, rose. He reached toward his own chest, toward the rapidly fading beat of his dying heart. There was no hesitation. No tremor of doubt. Only the burning, unyielding pride that had forged him. Gongsun Lie, his vision darkening at the edges, met the descending claw with a feral grin. “A heart, you say?” His voice was a raw, wet rasp, sharp with ruthless conviction. “Take it. And choke on the ambition that comes with it.” His hand, slick with his own stolen lifeblood, plunged into his chest with sickening ease. There was no pain, only a sudden, profound emptiness, a yawning void where his life-force had pulsed moments before. The fiend's claw, now only inches from his face, froze. A flicker of something akin to confusion crossed its shadowy features. Then, the Heaven-Swallowing Maw surged. Not outward, but *inward*, into that raw, open cavity. A sensation like an army of hungry mouths tore through his being, not consuming him, but *rebuilding*. The altar, which moments ago had been siphoning his life, shuddered. Its blood-red light, already dimming, began to reverse its flow, a torrent of dark, potent energy ripping from its core and funneling directly into Gongsun Lie. “What… what is this?!” The progenitor's booming voice, so full of contempt, cracked with raw, disbelieving agony. The spectral form of its manifesting soul-shadow writhed, shrinking. Wisps of its congealed gloom peeled away, dissolving into nothingness. The vast, oppressive power that had filled the blood-dimension began to dwindle, sucked dry like a withered husk. Lie’s body convulsed. His rotting flesh, once a map of his curse, began to mend, knitting itself together with a speed that defied logic. The dark, tainted Qi that had choked his power channels since birth screamed, then was violently purged, ejected from his pores in plumes of black smoke. His skin, once pallid and sickly, glowed with a healthy, vibrant luster. His bones sang with newfound might, his blood boiling not with fever, but with potent, untamed power. He felt the boundaries of his being expand, then burst. The bottleneck that had trapped him for so long – broken. He was no longer just a practitioner of the Foundation stage. He was not even in the Skyborne Apex. He was Zenith. He was pure, unadulterated power, a vessel of boundless Qi, forged anew. The ancient monster shrieked. Its skeletal hand, still hovering, dissolved. The towering shadow that had loomed over Siyue and Lie was now just a hunched, quivering form. It clawed at its spectral chest, as if trying to reclaim the power being ripped from its very essence. “My millennium… ten centuries of patient slumber! My stolen lifeblood! You… you will not…!” Lie stood. His eyes, once dulled by suffering, blazed with a fierce, golden light. Every movement was fluid, effortless, radiating an aura of absolute dominance that made the very air hum. He looked down at his chest, where a swirling, golden tattoo of a coiled beast had replaced his wound. A small, self-satisfied smirk touched his lips. “A thousand years, you say?” Lie’s voice rang deep, a stark contrast to his earlier rasp, thick with the power of a fully awakened being. “All of it, now mine.” The entity, a sliver of its former glory, mustered its last, desperate reserves. It condensed its vanishing form into a single, obsidian shard of malevolent intent, a final, concentrated strike aimed directly at Lie’s newly beating heart. This was its ultimate attack, capable of rending mountain peaks and sundering realms. Gongsun Lie raised two fingers, casually, planting his boots without shifting an inch. The obsidian shard, whistling through the blood-dimension with the force of a falling star, struck the tips of his calloused fingers. There was no explosion, no recoil. Only a faint, brittle *crack*. The shard, the culmination of an age of malice, shattered into a million flecks of impotent gloom, dissolving before it could touch him. The fiendish shade, now a thread of sentient darkness, recoiled, its form flickering like a dying candle. “Impossible! You… you were nothing but a vessel! A meal! I am ancient… I am…!” “You *were*,” Lie corrected, his gaze cold as winter stars. “Now, you are nothing but residue.” The dying entity, driven by pure instinct, saw its chance. Tang Siyue, still slumped against the altar’s edge, wounded and vulnerable, was a beacon of living energy. With a final, desperate surge, the wisp of the old terror shot past Lie, aiming for Siyue’s mouth, seeking to possess her, hijack her body, and escape the blood-dimension. Lie felt a sudden, profound surge of power from the altar, from the remnants of the fiend’s essence still swirling around him. He could absorb it all. Become truly invincible. A god. Or he could move, instantly, to intercept the fading threat. The decision was a single, agonizing slice through his newfound omnipotence. Finish the feast. Or save her.
