Chapter 16: A Glimmer of Empathy
918 words
A cold seeped into Elara's bones, far deeper than the winter air outside. Her vision blurred. The words 'weeks, maybe a month or two' echoed, a cruel mantra in the sterile hospital corridor.
Each breath felt like shards of glass in her lungs. She stumbled out, the world a watercolor smear of muted grays and whites. Snowflakes began to fall, melting instantly on her hot cheeks.
Driving was a blur. She didn't remember the exact turns, only the instinctual pull towards her small apartment. But her body, a creature of habit, veered off course.
It found itself outside Sterling Tower. Work. The only place she knew how to be functional, even when her insides were crumbling.
Pushing through the grand revolving doors, the warmth of the lobby did little to thaw the ice around her heart. She kept her gaze fixed on the marble floor, praying no one would notice her.
Her usual sharp focus was gone. Filing reports felt like moving through treacle. The numbers on the screen swam, refusing to coalesce into meaning. A colleague's cheerful 'Good morning!' barely registered.
Every fiber of her being screamed to curl into a ball, to weep until she was hollow. Instead, she sat upright, shoulders back, a perfect corporate automaton. No one could know. No one could see.
Minutes dragged into an eternity. The hum of the office, usually a comforting backdrop, now grated on her nerves. She felt exposed, a raw nerve ending in a room full of unsuspecting people.
Suddenly, a shadow fell over her desk. Elara flinched, her pen clattering against the polished wood. She looked up, her eyes wide, meeting Kaelen Sterling's intense gaze.
His expression was unreadable, as always. But something in his posture, the slight tilt of his head, felt different. He wasn't looming; he was observing.
