Chapter 4 of 10
Explosive Produce

The mana-cannon, a monstrosity of polished brass and humming mana-veins, swiveled with a low groan. Its crimson glow pulsed, a hungry heartbeat fueled by the pulped essence of Tenam’s own harvest. The commander's face, usually set in rigid arrogance, twisted into a smirk. “Now, farmer. Tell me all your secrets of these miraculous crops, or watch your old friend turn to ash.”
Tenam’s eyes, usually the color of rich loam, darkened to volcanic slag. The air around him thickened, sulfur prickling in his throat. Secrets? He had no secrets beyond hard work and a single-minded devotion to his patch of soil and the memory of Zempa. This man, this arrogant, posturing little warlord, was not only threatening Guru Yonten, but daring to desecrate the very produce Tenam cultivated with aching care. Using *his* efforts, *his* crops, to threaten *him*.
His calloused fingers curled inward. Not into brawling fists, but shapes schooled by plow handles and brass buckets. He reached into his worn satchel, bypassing the carefully packed tools and emergency rations. His fingers closed around something small, round, and warm. An overripe sun-berry, soft to the touch, leftover from his morning ration.
“Secrets?” Tenam’s voice was low, a rumble like distant thunder. “I’ll show you a secret.”
With a twitch of his wrist, he lobbed the solitary rind. It carried neither martial weight nor tactical aim, merely an irritated lob arcing through the haze. It wobbled lazily through the square's gloom, landing with a wet squelch against the commander's polished leather boot.
Silence hung over the flagstones, broken only by the artillery's humming coils. The officer glanced down at the burst red smear seeping across his toe-cap. A slow, incredulous laugh began to bubble up from his chest, scorn clear in his voice. “Is that… is that all you’ve got, farmer? A rotten fruit?”
The laugh died in his throat. The crushed skin began to throb with blinding, internal fire. A sharp, stinging scent of capsaicin and raw mana exploded outwards. There was no ‘boom,’ no grand detonation, just a blinding, spicy *flash* that seemed to rip the very air. A concussive ring of vaporized pepper and thermal shock slammed into the platform, sparking the unstable fuel cells that fed the battery.
The trestles supporting the siege engine groaned, then cracked apart. Shards of sizzling quartz sprayed across the flagstones alongside clouds of red powder that burned raw flesh. Half of the outpost’s heavy-duty, reinforced plating buckled inward, then peeled away with a shriek of tortured metal. Pikemen screamed, coughing and clawing at raw skin as the pepper-fog scorched their nostrils. Some stumbled backwards, clutching at their throats, their eyes streaming.

The light-trap holding Guru Yonten flickered, destabilized by the chaotic mana surge. Yonten, his face still contorted in pain from the binding, saw his chance. His normally placid features hardened. With a guttural cry, he slammed his fist against the invisible force field. Instead of a standard thrust, strange mineral spikes sprouted from his forearms, humming with a dissonant chord. They vibrated against the cage, snapping its light-strands with brittle, bone-sharp snaps. He wrenched his body free, gasping, the remnants of the crystalline energy still clinging to his robes like starlight.
The commander, blinded by ash and coughing blood, scraped soot from his brows. His uniform was scorched, his hair singed. He roared, a sound of pure, unadulterated fury. “You… you *peasant*! For that, you’ll burn!”
He raised his hand, gathering what remained of his concentrated mana. This was no petty cantrip; it was a high-tier siege spell forged to split canyon rims. A vortex of dark, crackling energy swirled above his palm, coalescing into a spear of pure, destructive force. It whistled through the choking mist, aimed directly at Tenam’s chest.
Tenam planted his boots. He glared past the incoming sorcery, taking in his crushed stalls, the shrieking hirelings, and the noise delaying his descent to Zempa. The audacity of it. He reached down, gripping the cold brass handle of 'The Wellspring of Aeyrden' holstered at his belt. Its brass was dull, its spout bent from years of use, but it was *his*.
He didn’t block. He didn’t deflect. As the whistling lance closed the distance, Tenam swung the dented vessel like a stray shovel. The heavy brass struck the ethereal spear with a soft *thwack*. The legendary spell, capable of obliterating hardened adamantine, didn’t explode. It didn’t dissipate. It sheared apart on the dull metal rim, sloshing wide like muddy runoff before disintegrating into dry ash.
A hollow groan rippled through the remaining guard line. Even Guru Yonten stood mute, peering past the smoking crater. The commander stared at the dissolving sparks, his gaze jerking between Tenam's muddy hem and the ridiculous metal vessel.
Tenam took a single, deliberate step forward. His voice, when it came, was cold as a mountain spring. “My crops. My friend. My peace. You threatened them all.” He raised the watering can slightly, its spout pointing at Vane like a farmer's finger of accusation. "Now pick up your trash and get off my floor."
The nobleman was arrogant, but not suicidal. He saw the murderous focus in Tenam's posture, the effortless swat that had dismantled his finest weapon. He saw the chaos erupting around him, his men choked and scattered. He barked an order, his voice hoarse, “Retreat! To the lower transfer points! All forces, fall back to the… the Galdan Drop!”
What remained of his forces scrambled. A specialized teleportation matrix, usually reserved for emergency extraction, glowed to life in the deepest, most fortified part of the outpost. Troopers, dragged by their pauldrons and choking on bile, tumbled into the portal before vanishing with dull pops. The commander spat a gob of red spit, shoved his surviving aide through, and vaulted into the flare just before the aperture collapsed.
Stillness settled over the ruined square, disturbed only by popping embers and the scrape of debris. The air still tasted of spice and ozone. Tenam set the dented pail against his calf, his breathing evening out.

A low, guttural groan echoed through the entire 90th floor. It wasn't the sound of metal buckling, but of reality itself tearing. The ground beneath Tenam’s feet shuddered, then bucked violently. A sickening lurch sent him stumbling, and a high-pitched whine filled the air.
“What now?” Tenam growled, regaining his footing, but the whine escalated into a piercing shriek. He glanced toward Yonten, whose gray brow broke into sudden, sickly sweat.
“The Spire… it’s… it’s dropping the floor!” Yonten screamed.
The flagged stone and broken crates vanished into empty space. Not shattered, not destroyed, but *gone*. One moment, they stood on solid ground; the next, they were plummeting, the wind rushing past them with a terrifying roar, the chaotic mana of the Spire rushing up to meet them.
