Chapter 9 of 10
Blood and Annulments
848 words
Ziya stared at Renoa, betrayal biting deeper than Orenzo's clumsy insults ever could. This wasn't some playful wager, some fleeting pretense. This was a cage, forged in legal arcane and sugar-coated promises.
“Keeps?” Ziya’s voice was a low growl, vibrating with raw outrage. Her hand flew to her left ring finger, snatching off the ornate silver band he’d given her for their ‘engagement.’ It had felt like a prop then. Now it felt like a brand. “This isn’t a game, Renoa! This is *my life*! My guild! My freedom!”
With a savage twist of her wrist, she flung the ring. It spun through the air, a silver blur against the opulent Azure Dining Hall, before clattering against Renoa’s chest. It bounced off his silk vest with a soft chime, falling to the polished stone floor between them, a tiny, glittering accusation.
His gaze dropped to the ring, then lifted back to hers, still unreadable. His chin set rigid. The careful composure he usually wore, even in the throes of their charade, was absent. What remained was a stark, almost predatory stillness.
“Freedom, Ziya?” His voice was barely above a murmur now, but it cut through the murmuring crowd. “Or the illusion of it?”
Before Ziya could retort, a guttural chant ripped through the air. Orenzo, his face contorted with triumph, stood at the edge of their impromptu circle, his hands raised. His palms, slick with sweat, glowed with a sickly scarlet glare. Tiny filaments of ruby spark erupted from the floor, weaving into a translucent lattice around Ziya and Renoa. The air grew thick, pressing in, heavy with the scent of ozone and something metallic.
“A blood-magic cage!” someone in the stunned crowd gasped. “He’s invoked the Duelist’s Decree!”
The Azure Dining Hall, only moments ago a scene of frantic revelry, shifted. The floor beneath their feet rumbled, the heavy marble sections sliding apart to reveal a sunken pit. The walls around them melted away, replaced by tiered spectator stands that materialized from behind hidden panels. The ornate chandeliers dimmed, replaced by stark, directional spotlights that cast them into sharp relief. The crowd erupted into an animal roar. This wasn't a dining hall anymore. It was the High-Society Duel Arena, a place for ancient grudges and binding wagers.
“Ziya Taron, Guildmaster of the Tidebreakers, and Renoa Cavis, Scion of the Cavis Mercantile Fleet,” Orenzo’s voice boomed, amplified by the arena’s magic. He stood at the edge of the pit, a sneer plastered across his face. “I, Orenzo Pel, invoke the Law of Contention! I challenge Renoa Cavis to a bound duel for the rights to the Tidebreakers Guild Charter and the hand of its Guildmaster!”
Years of diving sunken hulls, mortgaged off on the whims of two arrogant aristocrats. Renoa stood motionless, his dark clothes a stark contrast to the scarlet lattice, eyes boring straight into Orenzo.
“Do you accept, Renoa Cavis?” Orenzo bellowed, clearly savoring this moment. “Or do you forfeit the guild and your claim?”
Renoa didn't even hesitate. “I accept,” he stated, his voice calm, clear, and utterly unwavering. The single word resonated through the arena, sealing their fate.
“Excellent!” Orenzo cackled, dropping into the arena himself, drawing a shimmering, crackling whip of pure arcane force from his belt. “Let the duel begin!”
The fight was swift, brutal, and utterly devoid of honor. Renoa, despite his casual elegance, moved with a surprising, deadly grace, dodging Orenzo’s crackling whip with a fluidity that belied his socialite persona. He conjured emerald-green wards that flared under impact, deflecting Orenzo's clumsy strikes. He fought with an efficiency that was terrifying, a sharp contrast to the playful, careless man Ziya knew.
But Orenzo was not above fighting dirty. He feinted left, then lunged right, aiming a stinging tendril of power at Renoa’s knee. As Renoa pivoted, a low, guttural incantation spilled from Orenzo’s lips. A swirling orb of sickly violet light, humming with forbidden rot, materialized in his hand. Ziya recognized it instantly—a Shadowbind Curse, ancient and lethal, banned for its soul-crippling effects.
Orenzo wasn't aiming for Renoa. He swung his arm, launching the curse directly at Ziya. It streaked towards her, a silent, sickening missile.
“Ziya, move!” Brio’s scream shredded the din, but her boots caught on the flagstones.
Before she could even flinch, Renoa moved. He launched himself, a blur of dark fabric, directly into the path of the violet blast. The missile struck him full in the ribs with a dull crunch. The cage flared violently, absorbing the backwash, and Renoa dropped to the stones, choking on air. A dark stain bloomed rapidly across his silk vest.
He coughed, a wet rattle, red bubbling across his lower lip. His dark eyes, still fiercely fixed on Ziya, held a strange, faint smile. With a trembling hand, he reached inside his ruined vest, pulling out a folded piece of crisp, unblemished parchment. He pressed it into her hand, his bloodied thumb leaving a smear on the pristine surface.
“You were always free, Spitfire,” he whispered, his voice barely audible, before his eyes fluttered shut and his body went limp.
