Chapter 5 of 10
A Million Dollar Spite

The freezing water had receded as quickly as it had risen, the ancient mechanism groaning its defiance before reluctantly spitting them back into the Weeping Vaults’ damp, stale air. Renoa’s pressure gear, still dripping, outlined the Taron Guild crest, now a dull copper glow against his sternum. Ziya felt the icy residue clinging to her own clothes, but it was the searing heat of that brand, an echo of its silent pulse, that truly gripped her.
“What… what is that?” Ziya finally managed, her voice a reedy whisper in the echoing chamber. She pointed a trembling finger at the symbol, tracing its coiled serpent and gleaming trident.
Renoa’s gaze, which had been fixed on the now-opened alcove door, snapped to her face. A flicker of something unreadable – panic? annoyance? – crossed his features, quickly smoothed away by his practiced, careless smirk. He adjusted the torn collar of his gear, a casual, almost dismissive gesture that drew her eyes back to the mark.
“That?” He scoffed, his voice regaining its usual mocking lilt. “A little something I picked up in the markets. You wouldn’t believe the lengths some people go to for a proper ‘prop’ these days. High society judges, you know. They eat up sentimentality like candied krill.”
Ziya’s brow furrowed. “A prop? For what?”
“For our grand charade, my dear relic-hunter. To convince the old dowagers that our union is one of deep, abiding respect. A mark of shared purpose, a ‘bond’ between our guilds. Quite the performance, wouldn’t you agree?” He winked, a practiced gesture that usually held a glint of genuine mischief. This time, it felt brittle, a fragile shield.
She narrowed her eyes. “You branded yourself with my guild’s crest as part of a *fake-dating ruse*?” The idea was so preposterous, so utterly Renoa, that a part of her almost believed it. But the memory of his voice, raw with terror, the unmasked hunger in his eyes back in the penthouse, warred with his present flippant dismissal. The glow had faded, but the image remained, stark and irrefutable.
“A very convincing one, yes,” he replied smoothly, already moving past her towards the main tunnel. “And if you think that’s dramatic, you clearly haven’t spent enough time in the Sapphire Estates’ social circles. Now, if you’re quite done with your impromptu interrogation, we have a bidding war to attend. Orenzo won’t humiliate himself without an audience, and I intend for us to be front row.”
Ziya wanted to argue, to peel back the layers of his casual lies, but the urgency in his tone was undeniable. The Golden Gavel awaited, and with it, the chance to finally strike a blow against Orenzo. She stuffed her questions about the brand deep down, a burning ember to be rekindled later.
The Golden Gavel was a cathedral of avarice. Sunlight, filtered through stained-glass depicting ancient sea battles, painted shifting patterns across the polished obsidian floor. The air thrummed with the hushed murmurs of Miralba’s elite, punctuated by the sharp, rhythmic gavel strikes from the dais. Ziya, now in a gown of midnight blue silk that shimmered like deep ocean water, felt the familiar prickle of high society’s stares, their whispers like razor coral.
They found their seats, nestled amongst a sea of opulent fabrics and glittering jewels. Orenzo and his bride-to-be were conspicuously positioned in the front row, her throat already burdened by a cascade of newly acquired sapphires. Her smug smile was a physical challenge.
“Next, esteemed collectors,” the podium caller boomed, his voice echoing with practiced grandeur, “we present a piece of unparalleled beauty and myth: the Siren’s Tear. Legend claims it was wept by a heartbroken siren, its pearl imbued with the power to ensnare any heart. Opening bid at fifty thousand sovereigns.”
A murmur swept through the room. The Siren’s Tear was infamous, an heirloom of a fallen guild, its beauty breathtaking. A single, flawless abyssal pearl shimmered at its heart, surrounded by a swirling cascade of deep green and violet reef-gems.
Orenzo’s hand shot up immediately. “One hundred thousand!” he declared, his voice ringing with obnoxious confidence. His fiancee preened, reaching out to trace an imaginary line along her collar where the pendant would sit.
Bids flew around the room, but Orenzo matched each one, his expression a triumphant sneer. He was clearly determined to secure it for his betrothed, a public display of his wealth and dominion. Ziya watched, a knot tightening in her stomach. It was one thing to see him flaunt his new life, another to witness his calculated display of power.
Just as Orenzo raised his paddle to three hundred thousand, a melodious voice drifted from a few rows behind Ziya. “My apologies, but such a exquisite piece deserves a more discerning eye.”
Ziya turned to see a man with hair the color of sun-bleached linen and eyes like polished jade. He was dressed in flowing robes of seafoam green, clearly not from Miralba, and possessed an unsettlingly charming smile. He offered Ziya a low, elegant bow. “Lord Brand of the Solarian Coast, at your service, Lady Taron. I couldn’t help but notice such a stunning piece would be wasted on a neck already so… encumbered with lesser baubles.” His gaze flickered pointedly to Orenzo's bride.
A few titters rippled through the audience. The Pel heiress, usually so composed, flushed crimson.
“And for a lady as radiant as yourself,” Brand continued, his jade eyes locking onto Ziya’s, “no price would be too great. Allow me, for the pleasure of your company, to acquire this Siren’s Tear for you. Half a million!” he announced, his voice carrying easily over the stunned silence.
Ziya blinked, genuinely taken aback. A foreign nobleman, bidding an obscene fortune for *her*? Renoa, who had been leaning back in his chair with a bored slouch, went rigid as iron. His posture snapped straight. The easy smirk he usually wore vanished entirely, leaving his mouth a cold, hard line.
“A generous offer, my lord,” Renoa’s voice was a low rasp, stripped clean of its mocking lilt. “However, Lady Taron already has more than enough trinkets. And a companion who appreciates her perfectly well without needing to buy her affections.” He leaned forward, his glare pinning Brand until the traveler's charming grin froze on his lips. “One million gold.”
The entire gallery went dead quiet. An entire fortune for a single jewel. Orenzo stared with his mouth slack and pale with rage. His betrothed gasped, clutching her lace collar. Brand, for all his bravado, went pale, his composure cracking.
“Sold!” the auctioneer bellowed, his gavel striking the block with a resounding crack. “To Master Cavis for a staggering fortune!”
Renoa didn’t even glance at the auctioneer. His stare pinned the visitor for another beat, a silent, predatory warning, before he turned to Ziya. He reached out, his fingers tracing the line of her jaw, his thumb brushing her lip. His touch was heavy and claiming, sending heat prickling down the nape of her neck. Watching him take absolute possession of the room, Ziya felt an acute, unmistakable pang of desire. Not just as a means to an end, not as a fake boyfriend, but Renoa, for real.
His voice, soft and dangerous, was for her ears alone. “Mine.”
The auctioneer, seemingly oblivious to the simmering tension, announced, “And now, for our final, most anticipated lot of the evening.” He paused for dramatic effect, letting the collective anticipation build. “Lot number 237. A unique opportunity for expansion, for legacy… the deed to the Taron Guild, including all assets, licenses, and underwater claims in the Vesperian Expanse.”
Air trapped in Ziya’s throat. Her guild. She knew it was coming, but the sudden, stark reality of it hit her like a physical blow. Her fiercely guarded independence, her entire life’s work, laid bare on the bidding block. Her eyes darted to Renoa, a desperate plea in their depths. Had he done it? Had he secured her future?
The auctioneer's next words ripped through the hushed hall, tearing apart Ziya’s hopes, twisting her stomach into a cold, hard knot. “And the current highest bidder, having already placed a sealed, unconditional offer, is… Master Renoa Cavis.”
Ziya stared, horrified. Renoa. Her savior. Was he her new owner?
