Chapter 6 of 10

Cultivating the Weeds

Nie Chuyin's blood soaked hot through Zhirui's inner robes, slick across his palms as her breath struck his neck in shallow bursts. Above them, the granite slab ground into its mortise, snuffing the last seam of lantern light. Whip-like shoots lashed down from the ceiling fissures, trailing the stench of fermented sap. [Final Harvest Sequence Initiated: Nutrient Absorption Protocol Activated] “Zhirui…” Chuyin’s voice rasped against the subterranean rumble. Her body was impossibly light, draining of warmth. Her hand, slick with blood, came up to cup his cheek, her fingers trembling. “Don’t look at *my* wound. Look at *his*.” She tilted her chin toward the jade characters branding his vision. “The framework. Ouyang didn’t just create it. He *defined* it. It runs on an array's logic.” Sparks danced across Zhirui’s peripheral vision as heat rushed beneath his collar. He wanted to rage, to tear at the roots that tightened around them, to scream Ouyang Mo’s name until his throat bled. But Chuyin’s gaze, though glazed with pain, held a sharp, unyielding clarity. “The framework… only recognizes what it was taught to digest. What it was calibrated to reward.” Her words were punctuated by small, painful coughs that rattled her chest. “Its seeds… its… *favored* crops. They are extensions of *his* will. But there are things… it despises. Things it sees as… weeds.” “Weeds?” Zhirui’s voice was hoarse, thick with a venomous despair. Deep in his chest, the fibrous tendrils bound to his pericardium pulsed with dull, rhythmic hunger. “Yes. Unwanted. Uncategorized. Without value, in its eyes.” Chuyin’s hand dropped, her arm heavy. “A blind spot. A flaw in his grand design. You… you can rewrite its logic. From within. Use my array principles. Deconstruct. Re-route. Don’t fight the *construct*. Fight its *definition*.” Zhirui tracked the emerald glyphs burning in his mind, then looked down at Chuyin’s clammy forehead. The fury burning behind his ribs slowed, curbed by the drag of her ragged pulse under his fingers. He shut his eyes, shutting out the marrow-deep gnawing of the Tome. He dissected the characters as linework—a mortal array, rigid and patterned. He mapped the circuits as she had drilled him: pathways, nodes, the inverted pivot that turned a barrier into an internal cage. Ouyang Mo had forged this architecture to be absolute, but mortal design always bore seams. Every array, no matter how grand, had an unmapped corner, a forgotten sequence, a tiny, despised anomaly. Zhirui cast his intent past the central conduits, probing the untended borders of the lexicon. He bypassed the catalog of celestial grains Ouyang Mo had bestowed upon him. Instead, he dredged up the scrub the Azure Marches burned on sight: the Prickle-Stalk Vine that strangled ancient timber, the Ghoul-Bloom Thistle choking dry gullies, the Murmur-Wort rooted in graveyard cracks. He recalled the countless times he’d ripped them out, burned them, discarded them as useless. But now, in this moment of desperate insight, he saw their true value. [Unrecognized Flora Detected: Prickle-Stalk Vine. Ghoul-Bloom Thistle. Murmur-Wort.] The Tome’s jade flare curdled into an unsteady orange. It didn’t understand. It tried to categorize, to assign value, but these plants were outside its established parameters. They weren’t 'rewards' or 'resources'. They were just… *there*. Zhirui focused, drawing on every ounce of his botanical mastery, every bitter lesson learned from Ouyang Mo, every fragment of Chuyin’s array logic. He commanded the Murmur-Wort to feed upon the fiber lacing his pericardium, channeling qi as an acid rather than an irrigation tide. Agony tore through his ribs as the fibrous knot twisted, thrashing against his breastbone. He coughed, a guttural sound, and a stream of black, viscous liquid erupted from his mouth, sizzling on the stone floor. It wasn’t his blood. The foul discharge came from the foreign taproot, stripped loose by the feral weeds. [Anomalous Cultivation Detected: System Integrity Compromised. Redefining Flora Classification Protocol.] Before his inner eye, the line prescribing root accretion buckled. The characters charred to ash, re-knitting into jagged crimson brushwork that seared his soul. The revised clause settled into his marrow: ‘Root Severance Protocol: Initiated by Unmapped Flora.’ The pressure around his heart eased, infinitesimally at first, then distinctly. The knot of wood around his chest uncoiled a fractional inch. He had severed the first anchor. “Chuyin,” he breathed, wiping bile from his chin. “The seam broke.” Her eyes fluttered open, a faint smile touching her lips. “Of course it did. You… are not an ordinary farmer, Fan Zhirui.” Before Zhirui could respond, before he could fully absorb the monumental victory, a new sound erupted from above. Not the groaning of the consuming earth, but a deafening *CRACK* that tore through the very foundations of the subterranean chamber. It was followed by a thunderous *BOOM*, then another, and another, each impact shaking the entire Terraces with brutal, external force. Dust and rubble rained down, the air thick with the acrid scent of ozone and shattered stone. The sealing slab above them, the very roof of their prison, groaned under the assault. Deep fractures jagged across the overhead stone, driven by heavy, rhythmic impacts from above. Then, with a cataclysmic shriek of tearing metal and rending stone, a section of the greenhouse wall above them violently ruptured outward, daylight, harsh and unforgiving, pouring into the suffocating darkness, revealing figures silhouetted against the devastation. Sword-wielding warriors, clad in the silver and azure of the Jianxiao Ascendancy, stood poised amongst the wreckage, their formation precise, their intent clear. At their vanguard, a broad greatsword carved through the remaining stone. Elder Kuang Yu stood atop the heap of broken masonry, sword-force swirling in pale arcs around his shoulders as he shouted, “Fan Zhirui! Your heresy ends here! The Jianxiao Ascendancy has come for its vengeance!”
