Chapter 10 of 10

The Apple Seed

822 words

A sickly green pallor settled across the basin. Terraces groaned as retaining stones fractured into dust. Below the craters, mountain runoffs choked into sludge. Across the outer peaks, distant sword disciples collapsed as their meridians drained toward the lowlands. Ouyang Mo, dissolved into an oily gyre above the broken shale, laughed with a rattle like grinding millstones. “The roots run deep, little weed!” Ouyang Mo’s voice, no longer just his own but a chorus of dying earth, vibrated through the ground. “Deeper than your pathetic flower-tricks could ever reach! Tianyu will feed me!” Fan Zhirui stood unwavering amidst the chaos, the 'Azure Wild-Flora Sutra' a quiet hum in his mind. The invasive tendrils that had twined through his ribs were dead husk and ash. Beside him, Nie Chuyin anchored her boots in the churned loam, tracing silver mudra lines across her forearms. "His soul is merging with the deep bedrock," Chuyin said, breath scraping in her throat. "Diffuse, but pinned to a center. We need to pin him fast so you can strike." Her formation cords—braided cerulean light—shot from her calloused palms into the torn shale surrounding the elder's miasma. "Binding a ghost trying to digest the whole province?" Zhirui muttered, tracking the eddies of black mist. "Ambitious." "Better than fermenting under his compost heap," she spat, sweat dripping off her chin. "I cannot hold him past twenty breaths. Move, plowman." Zhirui set his boots into the furrow. He reached through the loam, feeling not stolen vigor, but the dry grit of broken basalt and starved roots awaiting rain. He opened his palm. In its center, nestled against his scarred skin, was a single, unassuming apple seed. It was no larger than an insect casing, flat and dull brown, free of any internal glow. Plain orchard seed, dry and dormant. "An orchard pip?" Ouyang Mo's voice thundered out of the fog, shaping a sneering human mask out of rot and soot. "You face the devourer of peaks, and you present a peasant's refuse?" "Not an offering," Zhirui said flatly. "An anchor." Chuyin's teeth clicked together, her forearms shaking as the cerulean bands groaned under the strain. "He slips like grease between the links! Zhirui, now!" Zhirui began to walk, his steps unhurried, through the roiling tempest of Ouyang Mo’s rage. The earth heaved, venting sulfurous steam, but he advanced with measured tread across the ditch. He stepped over the calcified shells of Ascendancy guards, ignored the greasy stench of Kuang Yu's remains, and marched straight toward the vortex center. "You want to feed on marrow, Old Mo," Zhirui said, voice steady over the gale. "Then swallow what orchards are made of." He raised his thumb and snapped the brown pip straight into the swirling dark. It carried neither blade-qi nor talismanic incantation. Yet as the hull struck the center of the vapor, the green text behind Zhirui's eyes flared violently. [Final Harvest sequence detected. Drinking the miasma, pale radicles erupted, latching into the coalesced vapor. Thick taproots drove downward, drinking deep, turning the foul rot into pale wood. Emerald shoots unfurled, expanding by arm-lengths every heartbeat. "What took root?!" Ouyang Mo shrieked, his vapor collapsing inward as wood drank his fog. Chuyin's glowing cables bit deep into the condensing trunk, pinned firm by the spreading timber. [Anomalous life-form: 'Malus Domestica'. Growth rate: Exponential. Energy absorption: Critical. Host integrity: Compromised.] The trunk thickened into an ancient bole, gnarled bark devouring the last coils of gray rot. Leafy boughs spread outward, drinking every scrap of drained vigor back out of the earth until the old man's wailing vanished beneath the rustle of foliage. With a sharp crack of parting timber, the giant canopy burst into an outward gale of white blossom petals. Drifting over the terraced gullies and broken crags, the pale cloud settled onto the mud, soaking back into the parched earth. High above, the limestone precipices of the Ascendancy were frosted in drifting white mulch. Zhirui and Chuyin stood in the center of the Wuliang basin, now a blooming, fragrant garden. The air was sweet, carrying the scent of a million wildflowers. The ground was soft, vibrant. The crater, once a symbol of death and decay, was reborn. Chuyin stumbled forward, her knees giving out. Zhirui caught her shoulder, bracing her against the new turf. "That," she gasped, wiping dirt from her cheek, "was quite a reap." A thin smile broke Zhirui's soot-streaked face. He reached into a low branch nearby, twisting free a heavy crimson apple. Runes of living sap pulsed faint along its peel. “A new era, then,” he said, handing her the apple. “Time to seed it properly.” Chuyin took the fruit, turning it in her palm, her gaze steady on his. Across the Sunken Terraces, the loam lay dark, wet, and ready for planting.
