Chapter 1 of 10
The Ash and the Angel

The first sensation was ash. It coated his tongue, gritty and acrid, burning his throat with every phantom gasp. He coughed, a ragged, wet sound, and the world swam into focus: a jagged sky, the color of bruised slate, bleeding into a horizon choked with rust-red dust.
His head throbbed, a dull, insistent ache behind his eyes, but his mind offered no explanation. No name, no memory, just an echoing void. He pushed himself up, hands scraping against pulverized stone, feeling the bite of sharp debris through his thin tunic. This wasn't a world he knew. This wasn't a *world* at all; it was a graveyard, a monumental ruin stretched beneath an eternally dying sun.
A shape loomed over him. Not from the sky, but from above, immense and reeking of sulfur and clotted blood. Six arms, thick as tree trunks, ended in claws that glinted like volcanic glass. A hulking monstrosity, its skin a mottled grey, its face a snarling maw of jagged teeth. A Ghul-Daar brute.
One of its colossal hands snaked out, closing around his throat with casual force. Air fled his lungs in a painful rush. The world tilted, spun. He clawed at the iron grip, his vision blurring, a cold terror seizing him. This was it. He had woken only to die.
Then, a flicker. Not in the dying light, but *within* his vision. A silent, holographic interface of shifting, luminescent cuneiform characters. The Genesis Slate. It pulsed, a silent command, a primal urge that resonated deep in his bones. *Revive.*
Beneath his feet, partially buried in the same ash and rubble he’d been lying on, was a corpse. A body, strangely intact, despite the devastation. It lay face down, a cascade of dark, feathered wings, utterly shattered, splayed around it like broken glass. The Slate pulsed again, drawing his gaze, highlighting a specific rune.
*Target acquired: Fallen Host. Reanimation protocol initiated.*
He didn't think. He *acted*. A jolt, cold and potent, surged from his core, down his arm, and slammed into the dirt. The air crackled, tasting of ozone and grave dirt. Emerald light, sickly and bright, erupted from the corpse, pulsing, growing, swallowing the brute's silhouette.
The Ghul-Daar roared, a sound of guttural rage and something akin to fear, momentarily loosening its grip. He gasped, sucking in a lungful of ash-tinged air, as the light intensified, ripping through the very fabric of the desolate landscape.
The body beneath him convulsed. The dark feathers, once shattered, began to mend, knitting themselves into impossible, gleaming planes. A low, resonant hum vibrated through the bedrock. The Ghul-Daar recoiled, its six arms flailing, but it was too late.
With a deafening crack, the earth split. The figure rose, not slowly, but with a sudden, violent surge. She was clad in armor the color of midnight, seamless and form-fitting, her skin like polished marble beneath it. Her hair, as black as the void between stars, streamed around a face of stark, inhuman beauty, devoid of a single flaw. From her back, two colossal, segmented wings of jet-black plumage unfurled, glinting with a predatory sheen. They were broken, fractured in places, yet they radiated an impossible power.
Her dark eyes locked onto the Ghul-Daar brute. No word, no hesitation. Just immediate, overwhelming intent.
One of her black wings snapped forward, a blade of solidified darkness, faster than thought. It sheared through two of the brute’s arms, the severed limbs thudding to the ash-choked grit, gouting thick, black ichor. The Ghul-Daar shrieked, a sound that tore at the ruined sky.
Mahelis was a blur. Her other wing slammed into the brute’s chest, ripping open a chasm in its grey flesh. With a guttural roar, she seized its remaining arms, twisting with a strength that defied her elegant form. Bone screeched against bone, sinews tore. A final, earth-shaking crack echoed through the ruins as the Ghul-Daar brute was torn asunder, its massive body falling in chunks to the slag, its screams dying in a spray of black blood.
She stood amidst the gore, utterly still, her dark wings slowly folding, their fractured edges gleaming. Her gaze, unreadable, flickered to him. It wasn’t a question, or a challenge, but a silent acknowledgement. A quiet understanding passed between them, a shared moment of raw, emergent power. He felt a stir of something new in his chest—not fear, but a surge of fierce, nascent pride.
From a jagged gap in the collapsed wall of a nearby structure, a figure stumbled out. He was lanky, with a shock of bright, unkempt hair and eyes that, despite the devastation around them, held an impossible cheerfulness. He stopped dead, mouth agape, staring first at the scattered remains of the Ghul-Daar, then at Mahelis, and finally at Vashnir.
“By the Shattered Peaks… an angel of the Mourning Dawn?” the man breathed, his voice surprisingly robust. “And a… a Sovereign to command her?” His gaze, fixed with a blend of terror and awe, settled on Vashnir. He dropped to one knee amidst the rubble, bowing his head. “My name is Kavadh. I was a scout, trapped, forgotten. My life, my loyalty, my very breath… they are yours, if you will have them.”
Vashnir looked at the man, then at Mahelis, then back at the ash-choked expanse. The terror had receded, replaced by a cold fury. This world… it had tried to kill him the moment he’d opened his eyes. It was a ruin of total failure and despair. But he had not died. And now, he had a power he didn't understand, and a loyal warrior at his side. He would not cower.
“Loyalty,” Vashnir said, his voice raspy from the earlier choking, but imbued with a strange, burgeoning authority. “I will have it. And I will have more. This land… this wasteland will not consume us. This blood-soaked dirt will be our foundation.”
He swept his arm across the desolate landscape, the gesture grand and defiant. “Here. Right here. We will build. Not a refuge, not a hidden fort. A fortress. A citadel. A defiance against this apocalypse. Let them come. We will meet them.”
The Genesis Slate shimmered, its cuneiform shifting, acknowledging his declaration.

Around them, the ground trembled. Not a small tremor, but a deep, resonant rumble that vibrated through the very air. Kavadh’s cheerful expression faltered, replaced by a stark paleness. He scrambled to his feet, pointing with a trembling finger.
“By the Empyrean’s Fall… they’re here! They heard it! The resurrection magic… it drew them!”
Over the nearest rise, an abyssal tide began to crest, an endless, undulating mass of chitinous forms, glowing red eyes, and guttural roars. The Abyssal Horde.
